Pump

John McCain is out with a new campaign ad (his second attack spot in less than a week) with a message that is hardly discreet: Barack Obama is to blame for skyrocketing gas prices.

The spot, entitled "Pump," will air on national cable and in key states according to the campaign. And it is a doozy. Opening with a picture of a solitary pump -- for some reason positioned in the middle of a river -- a narrator chimes in:

"Gas prices -- $4, $5, no end in sight, because some in Washington are still saying no to drilling in America. No to independence from foreign oil. Who can you thank for rising prices at the pump?"

In the background comes an ever increasing chant of "Obama, Obama," followed by a picture of the Illinois Democrat.

"One man knows we must now drill more in America and rescue our family budgets. Don't hope for more energy, vote for it. McCain."

Ignoring, for the moment, the idea that high gas prices are the fault of one senator as opposed to, say, the President of the United States, there are other objectionable aspects to McCain's latest spot. For starters, McCain is a recent convert to off-shore drilling, so his opposition (if it had an effect at all) is as responsible for our country's energy problems as Obama's. More significantly, of course, the implicit message of the ad -- that more drilling will lead to short-term relief at the pump -- is a notion disputed by every credible economist, including many of the 300 McCain claims support his candidacy.

Update: The Obama campaign responds, with a statement from spokesman Tommy Vietor.

"John McCain said recently that 'our dangerous dependence on foreign oil has been thirty years in the making, and was caused by the failure of politicians in Washington.' As someone who's been in Washington for 26 years, Senator McCain is one of those politicians, and he's consistently opposed investments in renewable energy that would reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Now he's proposing nearly $4 billion in tax breaks for the oil companies and Washington gimmicks that he admits will only provide 'psychological relief' to consumers. Barack Obama has fought for energy independence in the Senate and has a plan to invest $150 billion in renewable sources of energy that will create five million new jobs and provide struggling families with an immediate energy rebate and a $1,000 middle-class tax cut."

Republicans in the house (or maybe it was the senate) killed a bill MANDATING more drilling on land already leased by the oil companies.

The REPULICANS are obstructing drilling in America. McCain's party.

Oh, the humanity...

If they did get this from Penn, and they did pay him for it, then all is forgiven, Mark!

Seriously, there are several ways that Team Obama can respond to this. I can't wait to see the response.

If any one in the Mccain camp is listening or reading any of this, he should know the american people find this a fraudlent act upon his part. If he cannot tell the trueth on T.V, and in his ad's than it's just one more reason to say NO to a Mccains presendency! Also folk listen up, Mccain said he would not do this type of negative , lieing , spinning, underhanded campagne crap! The straight talk express that promised not to lie to the American people------------Just put out a big fat lie! Listen Mccain you are the one that's been in senate for 26 years! You've had 26 years of voteing against alternative fuel, and Obama been in senate what three years or so and he actually did vot for alternative fuels! Straight Talk my rear end! Mccain talks with a FORK tongue! Out both sides!

How about, instead of "independence from foreign oil" we ask for "independence from oil - a non-renewable energy source."

To me, the fact that the country does not follow the old adage "don't keep all your eggs in one basket," is our biggest problem. We need several forms of energy, with as many of them being renewable as possible.

OMG! Sure sounds like the RNC has realized it has BIG problems w/their candidate and they're just now awakening to the fact. The belittling of the opposition has begun in earnest. Stay tuned...

Obama is responsible for rising gas prices?
What else is he responsible for?
The high foreclosure rates.
The Bears Sterns collapse.
Global warming.
Failure to respond to Katrina.
Flooding in Iowa.
California fires.
High unemployment rate.
Outsourcing of jobs to Mexico and Asia.
E-coli in tomatoes and spinach.
Lead in toys from China.
Unreported consequences of pharacutical drugs.
Enron.

Like the steep rise in gas prices, these were by the hands of our Republcan masters.

Drill ye terriers drill...

Al Gore maintained on Meet the Press yesterday that drilling was just dumb. He likened it to someone finding themselves in a deep hole so they just keep digging...
This should be the response ad for the DNC--McCain look alike in a hole labeled FAILED ENERGY POCIES OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION and he keeps digging with a shovel labeled DRILLING.

What we really need is to compare the cost of say, 30 years more of foreign oil vs. 30 years of renewable solar, thermal, wind energy vs. 30 years of nuclear energy

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:07 PM on 07/21/2008

Sounds good but I looks like you like others in this blog are opposed to further drilling even 50-100 miles off the Coasts like it is religion. In the meantime we keep producing more and more oil from corn using Government subsides which many think is net energy negative and causes food prices to rise. But Oh Yes, Obama is from the midwest and he needs to win there so it's better to sweep corn subsidies under the rug.

Completely agree. Do they really think that the voters of this country will believe this?

Its about time someone was alerted to the little known fact that junior senators from Illinois have a monopoly on the oil industry.

Its a conspiracy that has been going on for years.

Why is there something so amateurish about the way the GOP creates ads, websites, etc etc?

Because they are children in grown up clothing. Or monsters disguised as human beings.

Because the old foggies that make up the GOP are still technologically challenged. They still haven't figured out how to create any ads that is not on paper and in print and they darn sure haven't figured out how the internet works.
