UPDATE JULY 22: McCain campaign sources confirm to CNN that there have been discussions high in the campaign about naming a running mate this week. They also say that, whether or not the announcement is made, the choices have been "narrowed" to the point where McCain could make a decision that soon.

Robert Novak reports:

Sources close to Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign are suggesting he will reveal the name of his vice presidential selection this week while Sen. Barack Obama is getting the headlines on his foreign trip. The name of McCain's running mate has not been disclosed, but Mitt Romney has led the speculation recently.

The news set off a flurry of reporting, with Politico's Jonathan Martin appearing to throw some water on Novak's story:

John McCain has narrowed his vice-presidential possibilities to the point where he considered a decision this week -- but he's likely to hold off, say sources close to the campaign.

The prospect of stepping on Barack Obama's much-anticipated overseas trip with the headline-grabbing news was discussed among the small inner-circle of McCain aides and advisers privy to the running mate decision, according to a McCain source. [...]

One inner-circle McCain adviser said the longtime plans are to name the selection close to the Republican convention, on the theory that all that really matters is the final sprint to Election Day.

"No one is panicking about this week," the adviser said. "Frankly, it is excellent for the press to be getting Obamamania out of their system."

Meanwhile, Chris Cillizza reports:

John McCain will huddle with vice presidential aspirant Bobby Jindal during a trip to New Orleans later this week, sources close to the campaign confirm to The Fix.

McCain's trip to Louisiana on Wednesday was the cause of much head scratching in the political world as it was not in keeping with a week of planned stops in battleground states.

But, the meeting with Jindal, who has been the state's governor since 2007, suggests that McCain himself is deeply engaged in the process of picking his second-in-command and that the youthful Jindal is under serious consideration.

I'll still be surprised if McCain actually makes it through the convention & the Repubs actually run him.
His campaign has been absolutely atrocious & nobody's excited about the prospect of him being President. I look for a bombshell switch at the last minute...

A view I have shared for quite some time. That is why I think O needs to stress his positions not just oppositions to McCant. It is either not their candidate or he will be the sacrificial lamb and will sacrifice someone else with him and try to blame Dems for all the stuff that is close to coming about.

I do not watch MSM but I can imagine that the lead will be Obama update, then VP teaser, commercial break; and then click as everyone turns to the latest mindless tv dancing with stars, American Idol, 5th grader or whatever.

VP captain underpants is as boring as cain OR the exorcist.

yes man VP to a yes man lobbiest brought & paid for panderer war hero, offshore drilling, k e a t i n g 5 special.

My preferences for the McCant VP:

1. Mayor of 9/11
2. Fred Thompson
3. Mittens
4. Fiorina

I think he just might go for Fiorina to try and get all 24 PUMAs to vote for him.
Then again, he may just go with Mittens because the Neocons dislike him the least.

Please pick Jindal or Huckabee and guarantee a runaway Democratic win! There is no way the majority of Americans can pull the lever knowing that one of those two has a REALLY good chance of being the president given McCain's mental status.

Magoo would have a pretty difficult time separating himself from W on any issue if he chose Governor Reminder for the VP spot.

Obama/McCaskill 2008

The thing about Romney is he has a tendency to over-do things in debates...

I can just imagine Romeny offending the women vote when he interrupts Claire McCaskill while she responds to a debate question, and she says "Excuse me sir, can I finish where are your manners?"

That will be a momment!!!

How about South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford as McCain's Vice Presential Running Mate? The
Governor scored a lot of points a few days ago when asked on a national news program to name
one difference between John McCain and W. Bush as far as their political postures are concerned.
I'm sure that as his Running-Mate, Sanford will be just as helpful in bolstering the GOP ticket, as he
was then. In case you missed Gov. Sanford's brilliant response to the reporter's question, after hemming and hawing for about 60 seconds, the good Governor finally said "I hate it when my mind draws a blank like this." To top it off, at the time, he was trying to explain why John McCain would make a better President than Barack Obama.

Wishful thinking, though that TV clip would make for a good campaign ad :-)

Will Pappy McGrampy really pick someone, or will he flip flop around like a carp out of the water?

He'll make his pick and then probably change his mind within an hour....

Hopefully he will find someone who can pick out Spain on a map. Given it is the Republican party - kind of doubt it.

After watching several of the Republican debates, I was amazed at how anachronistic the GOP is. McCain's general election campaign hasn't broken any barriers either. With that in mind, McCain's strategists probably will be aiming for specific demographics instead of making a larger statement with their pick. It should be Romney, with Michigan, not Massachusetts, in their sights, and maybe New Hampshire residents in the Boston market. And I think McCain's camp might be worried about the Mountain West, so they think Romney's religion could help in Nevada and Colorado. Flirting with Jindal is just a way of telling suburban voters that Republicans really aren't racist and will consider a nonwhite person.

What a blessing in disguise though--it will be hard for the McCain surrogates to claim that Obama is an elitist with ol' Mitt on the ticket.

Jindal would be great (for Dems).

I still think it'll be Pawlenty.

Please please please let it be Bobby "The Exorcist" Jindal.
