House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged disaffected backers of Hillary Clinton to support Barack Obama's choice for vice president, even if he picks a female candidate not named Clinton.

"I don't think we should be making an issue after the primary is over about who should be vice president. That would have been up to Hillary Clinton and would have been up to Barack. And it is up to Barack," said the Speaker, when asked about the possibility. "The only one thing important right now is party unity. None of us can afford the luxury of 'my candidate doesn't win the nomination' or 'my candidate wasn't chosen as vice president, I'm taking my marbles and going home.' The future of our planet is at stake: our budget, the constitution, the safety of our troops, everything is at stake in this election."

Pelosi's remarks to the Huffington Post come amidst growing concern that should Obama choose as a running mate a woman other than Clinton - say, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius - he would anger the New York Democrat's backers, many of whom see the gender glass ceiling as hers to break. On Sunday, the New York Times reported on these concerns in addition to breaking the news that Clinton was officially being vetted for the post.

"I'm respectful of those who have a preference, and hopefully their wishes will prevail," Pelosi said of the possibility of a backlash. "But if they don't there is nothing compared to the choice we have between John McCain and Barack Obama."

The highest-ranking Democrat in Congress and the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives, Pelosi preemptively declined to suggest whom Obama should pick as his number two, though she continued her advocacy for Rep. Chet Edwards of Texas (a centrist Democrat with little likely shot for the vice presidency). But in a wide-ranging interview, she did touch on several issues pertinent to the race for the White House and offered some sharp words for Sen. John McCain.

"McCain's campaign is an old way of doing things," she said, "endless money, no commitment to the fact and denial about the situation as it exists in our country and overseas. That has been the modus operandi of the Bush campaign, and now of the McCain campaign. This administration has been a failure in every respect," she went on. "And the very identification of the Bush people and, for example, Rove and his protégés [in reference to newly elevated campaign manager Steve Schmidt] in the McCain camp says that we are in for more of the same: same campaigning tactics, same policy for our country."

Speaking shortly after Al Gore addressed a surprised crowd at Netroots Nation, Pelosi used the appearance of the former vice president to highlight the broad importance of the general election. "I think about [what could have been] all the time," she said. "I like to say this first seven and a half or eight years of this century are ones we just might have to have a fresh start from. Let's start the century over."

A fresh start, Pelosi acknowledged, is ultimately determined by the prerogatives of the voters. And the California Democrat laid out a plan for expanding Democratic numbers in Congress -- what some (but not Pelosi) would refer to as a permanent Democratic majority. "I'm talking about a predictable, competent, bipartisan Congress," she said, offering an alternative label with a smile.

"I had a plan going into '06, that we would win in '06. Now we must solidify that victory by reelecting those members. It is no small feat. These are very difficult races." Moreover, she hinted at the reality that 2010 could be tough cycle for Democrats across the country, with several potentially vulnerable Democratic senators and governors up for reelection, and a traditionally negative climate for incumbents during midterm elections. "[We must] withstand whatever they do in 2010 and be ready for a new map in 2012."

The problem is that the democrats for some strange reason kicked aside the more experienced candidate in favor of this totally inexperienced 3 yr. senator. Bad, bad move. Obama will be chewed up and spit out if he becomes president.. He should have been content with the VP spot where he could have paid some attention to his job for a change. He has overreached which happens to be one of his character traits and now we are in jeopardy even if he wins the election. So, Ms. Pelosi we who knew better do not need to be chided by you or that bunch of turncoats (Kennedy, Kerry. Richarsdon etc.)

Obama won the Primary - Get over it!

Your predictions and "should haves", coming from someone w/ no name, mean nothing.

You're in the wrong place.

Pelosi (and Dean) are among the WORST leaders the Democratic party has seen in decades.!!! Pelosi demanding voters to vote for her "selection" in the name of false, and unearned, unity is a joke!

Obama should pick Hillary Clinton as VP. It's as clear as day. She has organizations in all fifty states. If he picks her, he doubles his campaign organization. She would be the most vetted VP candidate in history. She is committed to realizing health care for all Americans. She is an incredible advocate for women and children. She is strong, tenacious, smart and knows how to get things done. Furthermore, the sight of a black man and white woman on the same ticket will be an incomparable symbol of the change Obama proffers the American public. I wanted Hillary for POTUS, but I'm excited about Obama. I won't vote for John McCain. I want Obama to pick Clinton as VP, not because of holdouts, but because she is obviously the best person for that job. And, isn't the point of Change You Can Believe In that Obama will bring to our government competent, qualified, committed and patriotic people who do not seek to change our religious beliefs or to line their own pockets with money but instead serve all Americans. I continue to believe that HRC is such a person. I hope Obama makes the right decision.

Obama does not have to pick Hillary! And all you folks who say you won't vote for Obama if he does not, I say you are nuts! Don't call yourself a Democrat.....And we will have you to thank for 4 more years of ugliness: war - lip service to climate change - kowtowing to corporate interests - a blow to civil rights and a HUGE blow to women's rights when McBush appoints judges who want to see the repeal of Roe v Wade. The lists goes on because Bush is the WORST President in modern history. Is this what you want?

Pelosi,
Get out of the middle and do something great for this country! Get the dems excited and out of the muck and the political bed with the republicans and corporations. You're all a bunch of lame ducks unless you prove otherwise. Time to stop giving away our ideals to the middle all the time.
Get rid of the pork, the lies, the deals, the subsidies, the lobbyists, the lying, cheating, deceiving administration and their abuse of power. I'm sick of paying for all your salaries and mistakes!

You can stop worrying about Pelosi when we get her REMOVED FROM OFFICE in November. To do that, though, we need your help: Please donate generously to CindyForCongress.org - Cindy Sheehan is the ONLY hope of having a different Speaker in the next congress.

Hey Pelosi stop telling us what to worry about. I trusted you and voted Democratic across the board in the last election and nothing has changed. I wouldn't vote for Obama even if Hillary were to be chosen his VP. Thats Democratic blackmail. You had your chance and you blew it! I will now vote McCain, at least I know he will surround himself with seasoned politicians and not unknowns like Obama. I am really disappointed in your lack of leadership.

I am sorry that I have to repeat myself to my fellow posters. However, I want Senator Obama to select Ms. Pelosi as his VP. Isn't that what she wants? Then, and only then, we won't have to listen to her fake "promises" anymore.. She does not advance the "party unity" cause at all, because she is obsessed with HRC. She just can't let it go, over and over again.....................anybody got an Altoid?

Please make her VP or make her go away. STOP the insanity!

Oh great, now, I'm hungry. Thanks Nanc!

I totally don't see this POV. I don't see this "wanting to be VP" which is completely illogical. I don't see this "obsession" with HRC.

I see a leader of a party making appropriate comments to party holdouts who are behaving like children.

I think those who namecall Nancy like this have an issue themselves. Just saying. Common sense really should be what people use when commenting on this impeachment issue, but almost none of you use it, just hurl accusations and namecall. Very rational. Not.

While I agree that I don't see her going for the VP slot either, Nancy as VP has the attraction of guaranteeing - as much as there ever is a guarantee in politics - that Nancy is no longer Speaker. She'd have to give up her seat, too, and if she announces now, that means Cindy Sheehan WILL get her seat!

Good news, that...

But it hasn't happened ("yet").

Nancy Pelosi is someone who took us all by storm and then turned into perhaps the worst speaker of the house in history.
She often panders to the right, blocks democratic initiatives, and disallow bills to even make it to the floor. A good example? The latest impeachment attempt.

As for her Hillary proposal, we are presented with the same issue we have had since Reagan. It's like flying on a plane : "Chicken or Lasagna?"

Well, what if you don't like either.

Urge away Nancy, but with your record, many voters aren't buying.

Speaker Pelosi should get out of the way and let the impeachmet hearings begin; Dubya and the rest of the dark side of the force needs to get gone asap. She has a point regarding Obama, but wholesal dismissal of Senator Clinton is unwise and unwarrented.
So many people want HRC supporters to "get onboard" for Obama; the problem is that we refuse to be taken for granted; disrespected, talked to shamefully and lied to outright. Don't talk to me about change and then continue on the path well worth path to nowhere. All I have seen so far is talk and more talk and most of it sounds like all the past jabber I have heard before.
As I have said in the past, my vote is my business and my money will stay in my purse until I get results. I will not hold my nose any longer. Write-in votes are allowed in all 50 states and until I see differently, HRC will get my vote in the fall.

Pelosi is the worst speaker ever, 9% approval rating. She was against Hillary from the start because she's jealous of her. I can't wait to see her go.

Be careful of the write-in votes, in some states it does not count unless the candidate asks to have his/her name on the ballot. I think there are some rules regarding just how you go about it in each state. I called my Supervisor of Elections here in Florida and write-ins are not allowed.

Seems like I heard a comment awhile back that Pelosi said that if anything happened to the Pres.
if it happened to be Dem. and Hillary was VP, that Hillary wouldn't move into Pres. position,
she would.....

I can't wait for November to get this thing over with....It's like waiting for Christmas...
Ya don't know what you're going to get.....No matter how pretty the wrapping is, it may not be
the present you wanted.....And it's one gift that can't be returned if you don't like it.
And no matter who gets in....nothing is going to change the day after.

What happened to the confetti and celebration when Pelosi and her fellow dems took over Congress? I mean, at the time all you could read in every newspaper was how the dems were going ot save the country now that they were "in charge"! So why all the hate for your savior?

The first female VP nominee "glass ceiling" was already broken in 1984 by Hillary's good pal, Geraldine Ferraro. (She was lucky she was a white woman, little known Rep. from NY).

Perhaps Hillary should set her sights on doing something no human has ever done before. Walk on Mars or Jupiter? Orbit the sun? Discover a new dimension?
