House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged disaffected backers of Hillary Clinton to support Barack Obama's choice for vice president, even if he picks a female candidate not named Clinton.

"I don't think we should be making an issue after the primary is over about who should be vice president. That would have been up to Hillary Clinton and would have been up to Barack. And it is up to Barack," said the Speaker, when asked about the possibility. "The only one thing important right now is party unity. None of us can afford the luxury of 'my candidate doesn't win the nomination' or 'my candidate wasn't chosen as vice president, I'm taking my marbles and going home.' The future of our planet is at stake: our budget, the constitution, the safety of our troops, everything is at stake in this election."

Pelosi's remarks to the Huffington Post come amidst growing concern that should Obama choose as a running mate a woman other than Clinton - say, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius - he would anger the New York Democrat's backers, many of whom see the gender glass ceiling as hers to break. On Sunday, the New York Times reported on these concerns in addition to breaking the news that Clinton was officially being vetted for the post.

"I'm respectful of those who have a preference, and hopefully their wishes will prevail," Pelosi said of the possibility of a backlash. "But if they don't there is nothing compared to the choice we have between John McCain and Barack Obama."

The highest-ranking Democrat in Congress and the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives, Pelosi preemptively declined to suggest whom Obama should pick as his number two, though she continued her advocacy for Rep. Chet Edwards of Texas (a centrist Democrat with little likely shot for the vice presidency). But in a wide-ranging interview, she did touch on several issues pertinent to the race for the White House and offered some sharp words for Sen. John McCain.

"McCain's campaign is an old way of doing things," she said, "endless money, no commitment to the fact and denial about the situation as it exists in our country and overseas. That has been the modus operandi of the Bush campaign, and now of the McCain campaign. This administration has been a failure in every respect," she went on. "And the very identification of the Bush people and, for example, Rove and his protégés [in reference to newly elevated campaign manager Steve Schmidt] in the McCain camp says that we are in for more of the same: same campaigning tactics, same policy for our country."

Speaking shortly after Al Gore addressed a surprised crowd at Netroots Nation, Pelosi used the appearance of the former vice president to highlight the broad importance of the general election. "I think about [what could have been] all the time," she said. "I like to say this first seven and a half or eight years of this century are ones we just might have to have a fresh start from. Let's start the century over."

A fresh start, Pelosi acknowledged, is ultimately determined by the prerogatives of the voters. And the California Democrat laid out a plan for expanding Democratic numbers in Congress -- what some (but not Pelosi) would refer to as a permanent Democratic majority. "I'm talking about a predictable, competent, bipartisan Congress," she said, offering an alternative label with a smile.

"I had a plan going into '06, that we would win in '06. Now we must solidify that victory by reelecting those members. It is no small feat. These are very difficult races." Moreover, she hinted at the reality that 2010 could be tough cycle for Democrats across the country, with several potentially vulnerable Democratic senators and governors up for reelection, and a traditionally negative climate for incumbents during midterm elections. "[We must] withstand whatever they do in 2010 and be ready for a new map in 2012."

I'm not impressed with Speaker Pelosi's argument. Senator Clinton is far more experienced and qualified than any other female candidate that I can think of. It would make more sense to me to pick a more qualified male candidate than to attempt to mollify women by picking a less qualified woman. We're not interchangeable, after all.

yup!
Well, she did take it off the table back then.

But yes, these criminals will be skating with very little in the way of investigations and certainly no prosecution unless the world community swteps in.

Britain hass now pretty much classified us as a rogue nation where torture is concerned.
Gee, why doesn't HuffPo post something about that instead of all the MSM talking points and all the crap they post designed to incite the Hillary Haters to contiinue their divisive rhetoric.

Or how about the panel discussion fromm netroots where a big deal Obama adviser/insider warned against prosecuting the current criminal administration.
Stunning.
Of course when it finally comes down to the fact that they decided, in the spirit of biparisanship to let thm get away with all they have done it will be spun into something nobel and anyone who rejects it and is outraged by it will be labeld either Republican trolls (no one said logic is in great supply) or far left wing nuts.

As with Fisa there will be a huge rationalization push from the early responder teams. And of course the attacks from anyone who dares criticize him.
There has been a pattern developing in preparing us for letting them walk free.

But where are the articles about any of this here?
No, we have articles that will incite thousands of comments of middle school cliquish hatred instead of promoting actual discourse between concerned adults.
ugh.
the MSM hits the internets.

oopps, I meant to put the links to the panel discussion up.

I really think that the telecom immunity was part of laying the groundwork to not prosecute or even do much investigation (for form's sake. Then we have these comments coming out that it will be harmful to the country and the party to prosecute (even though much of the country wants accountability) Then there were some comments recently about "reconciliation process" rather than prosecutions. A comment or two here and there over and over again becomes common knowledge and creates "truthiness."Along with early statements Obama has made about --IF there seems to be criminal activity he will initiate investigations but how it is a danger to create more divisiveness or nothing will get done-- there looks to be a pattern developing to let us down easy.

I'd say prosecuting these people, restoring the rule of law,
protecting, defending and restoring the Constitution, transparently investigating so Americans and the world can see what they have done, showing the world how a Democracy works, that no person is above the law and we do not allow rogue leaders Is doing quite a bit. Additionally it would restore trust and good relations in us from our allies and aid in developing decent relationships with the Islamic world (except maybe saudi Arabia who are very close to the Bush syndicate.)

OHMYGOD! I forgot the links again. The aging process is my excuse.
Anyway, This is absolutely outrageous and an end of the very idea of it should be done immediately with some grass roots action.
Glenn Greenwald is doing a great job on educating people to what is going on for real.
I encourage all who are interested in JUSTICEto put his column on their feed/RSS reader.
Hee is a link to his current article dealing with this issue:
http://tinyurl.com/6ltsg6
There are many others on Fisa and another excellent oone on this.
Loads more.

Here is the panel discussion at netroots.

From Greenwalds blog:
"When I wrote over the weekend about Sunstein's [Sunstein is Obama inner circle adviser.] remarks urging that Bush officials not be investigated or prosecuted for their crimes, I was relying on Ari Melber's (accurate) report in The Nation about Sunstein's Netroots Nation panel. As amazing as I found Sunstein's remarks based on Melber's summary, they're even more amazing when heard in their entirety, which one can listen to here (the whole Q-and-A session, beginning at 38:00, is what is so instructive

http://tinyurl.com/6agvte

We should all be very worried about this and finding ways to take action and have our voices heard!
hope you find it useful.

Pelosi won't encourage impeaching Bush and Cheney because Obama is the ONLY Dem to state Bush and Cheney HAVE NOT committed impeachable offenses!
Even Kucinich and Wexler - both impeachment advocates - endorsed Obama before Iowa!!
But proposing "impeachment" THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN is a good way to garner donations for their 2008 campaigns.
Bingo!

Josh, ad hominem and/or ad feminam attacks are particularly ignorant.

Cheney would have to go first. She knows that.If she moved to impeach, she would have been called macciavelllian BECAUSE she would become first in command.
Besides, it was pretty impossible with a one-vote (some days) majority in the Senate.
Get real. If you ever heard her speak in person, you would know Pelosi is eloquent and articulate and minces no words in scathing criticism of this administration. But you suck up everything repeated endlessly by the mass media.

Thank you Madam Speaker! If these people were our personal friends, we would have disassociated weeks ago. They don't deserve any more attention, until they start acting like adults.

As for Hillary as VP, I honestly believe that she knows she would hurt Obama's chances (with his constituents) if he names her VP. This is the kind of vindictive MONSTER she is, looking for any means to undermine Obama's efforts.

Millions of Americans who would vote Democrat will vote Republican. Netrooters enjoy your dreaming because in November you will see bright RED. Yes war, disease, but also rights and security.
Your nightmare will be all our nightmare, but do not say how come? How could it happen? Remember we were attacked on 9/11, our soldiers are fighting in two countries. You felt our goverment was our enemy instead of Radical Islamic Extremism. I do not blame you, the propaganda trying to convince of this is everywhere.
At least we will be free. To say what we want, be rewarded for our endevors, be gay, marry when, if, who, or not if we want, dress and behave modestly or not, be Christian, Buddist or Atheist.
We will be safe. We may be removed from public places, we may be confined to 'Free Speech Zones"' but we will be allowed to dissent without fear of being shot in the head. We will know that our WH, Congress, Senate and Military are doing all they can to keep us safe, when people hate us. Not because, as they try to say because we hurt them, because of who we are and what we stand for. Liberty and Justice for all. Freedom and security these are priceless.
May all World Goverments and World Leaders envision and pursue this for their own people.
Let the games begin...
Ignorant, low informed, racist, emotional wreck, but allowed to vote and voice my dissent.

What's really interesting is that it is suggested that Mc will attempt to announce his VP on HIS birthday to distract attention FROM his age!!! Well, O doesn't have that "problem" in selecting a VP now does he!!?

Anyway why would Mc not be in the customary celebratory mode of a birthday ... that just ain't right!! And just who will be his VP pick that it should cause such distraction .... some teeny bopper jumping out of a huge cake!?

This stuff just keeps getting funnier & funnier!!

The trueth is, she'd be more welcome if she and Billl was out on the campagne trail stumping for him with alll her heart and soul! But that isn't the case! She let some Hillary supporters break off into a crazy frinze thing now, and did nothing to bring them in! Her sight was a sad thing after she lose this nomination, and she did nothing on that sight for her blog supporters! I think he'd almost look like giveing in to her supporters BLACK MAIL now if he made her the V.P! I think her lay back from doing what she and Bill should be doing, still to this day hurts the party, as well as Obama. Her onlly hope is for her and Bill to get off their lazy butts and get visable, and get to work and show themselfs a lot more. Show they really care about this! AT this point it's my impression, like millions others that niether of them care a damned if he gets the Presidency, and when he does, they will run up with their hands out just like the rest of them.

Why are supporters of the former first lady insisting that she is the only woman in America worthy of political power? There are millions of women in America just as smart as the former first lady. Just because they weren't married to a president makes them no less worthy. I like Kathleen Sebelius and want to see her as VP!

It's a cult, they worship her, they recognize only her; other women, however smart, are inferior. If they even exist. Which is very strange since most of these women claim to be ardent feminists, champions of women's rights.

Pot calling kettle?

Rich when an Obama superfan declares anyone as a follower of a cult...as with Hillary, her supporters were deeply practical, not expecting clouds to part when their candidate opened their mouth, not relying on pipe dreams and slogans to make her point.

America is a realist nation, not one that is mired in idealistic claptrap...

By the way, what so f***ing great about being VP? It is not as though Obama is going to be so foolish as to abdicate nearly all authority like Bush did to Cheney. When left just to their constitutional role the VP is about the most powerless national office in american politics. Naming Clinton as VP and then giving her only the constitutionally mandated powers would be punishment, not reward. Being a senator with seniority is WAY more important.

In addition VP is not that great a platform to run directly for president after two terms (ask Gore) and it is the one place that is absolutely impossible to run against a president seeking re-election!

I've been asking that for weeks, saying that there are much better jobs for H than VP, and askin g if it's ever even been confirmed that she herself wants it. But nobody pays any attention to me; hopefully, they will pay attention to you and realize that this VP thing has been blown out of all proportion.

If it were something like Attorney General or Secretary of State, I could see her pining for it...but VP? Why would someone like H, with her thirst for power and her drive, want THAT?

Unless, of course, she believes in her heart that something will happen to him---and I am not suggesting she would like that, or do anything to bring it about, either.

I think Senator Obama should select Ms. Pelosi as VP. Then, we can find a new Speaker. How difficult could that be? And, we don't have to listen to her "promises" anymore. All in favor, say aye!

She's not advancing the cause of party unity -- she's killing it. Always the same old, every week, HRC (hmmm, could it be somebody is a little....?) . How about: "I don't know, No comment, Anything's possible, Don't know of Sen Obama's intentions, Male or Female is terrific, Hey, did you see that Batman movie, etc."

One of the (infinitely many) problems with the idea of Clinton as VP is her seeminly hardcore (PUMA, Hillraisers, other miscellaneous bitter supporters) supporters' idea that her being VP will at all change the fact that Obama is at the top of the ticket.

Clinton's job as VP, as would be the case for anyone he chooses to name, would be to fall in line behind Obama, support his agenda and the Party's platform, promote HIS candidacy, and not attempt in any way to make it about them or cause ANY unwelcome distractions during the GE. All of this would require that:

1. Bill be completely uninvolved in any way from the campaign through Hillary's term in office - his support is no longer worth the risk of the "loose cannon" effect he had on Hillary's primary race, and
2. Uninvolved or not, Bill would still need to be completely vetted - and God only knows what a discovery of his financial records or current womanizing practices may uncover, and
2. Hillary take a back seat and stay there, and
3. Hillary's supporters all fall in line and quit complaining - because, really, the only reason Obama would really have to name her would be to pull in her reluctant fundraisers and voters - and this she can neither control or guarantee.

So, like it or not, it's NEVER going to happen.
