House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged disaffected backers of Hillary Clinton to support Barack Obama's choice for vice president, even if he picks a female candidate not named Clinton.

"I don't think we should be making an issue after the primary is over about who should be vice president. That would have been up to Hillary Clinton and would have been up to Barack. And it is up to Barack," said the Speaker, when asked about the possibility. "The only one thing important right now is party unity. None of us can afford the luxury of 'my candidate doesn't win the nomination' or 'my candidate wasn't chosen as vice president, I'm taking my marbles and going home.' The future of our planet is at stake: our budget, the constitution, the safety of our troops, everything is at stake in this election."

Pelosi's remarks to the Huffington Post come amidst growing concern that should Obama choose as a running mate a woman other than Clinton - say, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius - he would anger the New York Democrat's backers, many of whom see the gender glass ceiling as hers to break. On Sunday, the New York Times reported on these concerns in addition to breaking the news that Clinton was officially being vetted for the post.

"I'm respectful of those who have a preference, and hopefully their wishes will prevail," Pelosi said of the possibility of a backlash. "But if they don't there is nothing compared to the choice we have between John McCain and Barack Obama."

The highest-ranking Democrat in Congress and the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives, Pelosi preemptively declined to suggest whom Obama should pick as his number two, though she continued her advocacy for Rep. Chet Edwards of Texas (a centrist Democrat with little likely shot for the vice presidency). But in a wide-ranging interview, she did touch on several issues pertinent to the race for the White House and offered some sharp words for Sen. John McCain.

"McCain's campaign is an old way of doing things," she said, "endless money, no commitment to the fact and denial about the situation as it exists in our country and overseas. That has been the modus operandi of the Bush campaign, and now of the McCain campaign. This administration has been a failure in every respect," she went on. "And the very identification of the Bush people and, for example, Rove and his protégés [in reference to newly elevated campaign manager Steve Schmidt] in the McCain camp says that we are in for more of the same: same campaigning tactics, same policy for our country."

Speaking shortly after Al Gore addressed a surprised crowd at Netroots Nation, Pelosi used the appearance of the former vice president to highlight the broad importance of the general election. "I think about [what could have been] all the time," she said. "I like to say this first seven and a half or eight years of this century are ones we just might have to have a fresh start from. Let's start the century over."

A fresh start, Pelosi acknowledged, is ultimately determined by the prerogatives of the voters. And the California Democrat laid out a plan for expanding Democratic numbers in Congress -- what some (but not Pelosi) would refer to as a permanent Democratic majority. "I'm talking about a predictable, competent, bipartisan Congress," she said, offering an alternative label with a smile.

"I had a plan going into '06, that we would win in '06. Now we must solidify that victory by reelecting those members. It is no small feat. These are very difficult races." Moreover, she hinted at the reality that 2010 could be tough cycle for Democrats across the country, with several potentially vulnerable Democratic senators and governors up for reelection, and a traditionally negative climate for incumbents during midterm elections. "[We must] withstand whatever they do in 2010 and be ready for a new map in 2012."

Her plan was delivering false promise. Bring the troops home, lower gas prices and begin hearings on the Prez. None of which she did or ever intended to do. She clearly states her plan. Folks bought it.

Plans get altered. A huge part of the 2006 Democratic sweep was conservative Democrats who represent red districts. Freshmen Congressman have the hardest reelection of any because they are judged on the past two years.

The main achievement in your first term being that you participated in the impeachment of the Republican president might be wildly popular in a blue district, it isn't going to go over too well in a red district.

Would it also be widely popular to help reduce the gas prices and remember the justification that you offered was the platform they ran on in 06. Troops didn't come home either.

It is becoming clear to many that the control in Congress is in the Upper-Levels where the 'Old Guard' have retained control of our gov for decades. The (new) DEM-Congressmen we elected in year 2006 could not stop this Hierarchy from continuing to kiss the Bush-Admin warmongering Rear.

This is the location Americans MUST concentrate on, RIDDING Congress of this Old-Folks-Home that have been selling out America to Special Interest's (foriegn/domestic) for DECADES.

Dems have a slight numerical majority, but not enough to prevent the Repubs from getting in the way and blocking almost every single thing Dems tried to do.

Yeah and they aren't beyond grand standing. Like H@rry Re-id pulling out the cots for an all nighter.

But on this they did nothing because they intended to do nothing.

There is one important fact you have overlooked, ACROSS both party lines of DEM and GOP Voters, the MAJORITY of Americans (DEM/GOP) in 2006 either ignored Republican candidates, or instead elected DEM majority.

Now if you believe the GOP Candidates in Congress are selling out America (as I believe), work to get these people replaced with (true) American Patriots, who will vote for American's instead of a very-few today known as the Military/Industrial CORP-GOV.

What I am still finding out from Clinton supporters is that party unity is hard the way you and the rest of the democratic party treated your best prospect for the office of president.

Are we then to assume that the Clin-t0n supporters did not have the same interests?

IF HE DOES NOT, HE HAS A LONG HARD BATTLE TO FIGHT.

I think he is assured a loss if he picks her.

She has a bad rep, and the repubs wanted her to get the nom very badly. She represents the exact opposite of him. What part of that is a winning combo?

I am sure they did. Now they need to vote as those were the issues they cared about. If they vote Mc Cain they are voting against their own interests and against Hillary's issues and platform.

Every single Clinton supporter I have met in real life, yes, has absolutely the same interests.

Some of the ones here, and every member of PUMA... No. If they did there would be no way they would contemplate voting for Sen. McCain.

When the primaries first got started, I found myself with a very difficult decision to make. Not just between O and Hill but, geez there was Biden, Dobb & Edwards. All of whom I think/thought very good democrats. Although I decided to support O, I didn't think that O had a chance in this country ... I begin supporting O fully after listening to him, not MSM but him!! As Hill began to attack O, not on the issues but him personally ... she lost not just my respect but I was ashamed of her & Bill!! To think that she & Bill really thought they could take certain demographics totally for granted was distasteful!!

I believe that Hill knows full well what she did wrong ... and I also think that O's VP choice belongs solely to him ... he has already earned that move!!

Next time, perhaps Hill won't slam against that glass ceiling with such unreasonable force!!

I can see that. And your last line was the most powerful. I think the inevitable thing got to them. In think they thought they would levy a claim as in the past and in came back to bite them.

However,I was only pointing out that despite the tactics I believe that the Hill supporters had the same best interests at heart.

I'm gonna support the Democrats one last time.

LAST CHANCE TO GET THINGS RIGHT.

YOU HEAR ME!? O in 08, but if it don't work out better, REVOLUTION in 10.

And I am not expecting they will succeed, but if we work together, we can. Bush has brewed us a perfect storm for dumping the opposition and making the kind of changes we need to get us all working together for a better America and a better planet.

Don't blow it.

Clinton is extremely popular among Latinos of the Southwest. Obama is not. It makes sense, to me at least, to go with Clinton.

As for Nancy Pelosi: ' The future of our planet is at stake: our budget, the constitution, the safety of our troops, everything is at stake in this election." If she really believes that, why did she take impeachment "off the table"? Pelosi and her ilk in Congress are not expediting the will of the people as clearly stated in the 2006 elections. Furthermore, she herself has ignored the Constitution. The House has a constitutional duty before them and Dennis Kucinich seems to be the only member taking it seriously, to say nothing of the rest of Pelosi's disingenuous concerns. The people of her state need to send her packing.

well since Obama has about 60% of the Latino vote already, I would say with another 4 months to go, he is doing pretty damn good....

please, stop talking like the pundits on tv, they were wrong and you are too....

NO VP for that shrill HRC

DLC democrats are working very hard in the shadows to insert Clinton and the DLC into an Obama administration. Americans must beware of the DLC, they are corporate driven and funded, these people are not friends of American labor.

Pelosi lost me at "...off the table.", so with all due respect, I wish she would just either do her damn job as she swore to do when she took her oath of office OR go away! To be lectured by this woman who I consider to be one of the most ineffective Speakers EVER, is an affront.

None of them are even Democrats!!

These are STILL the same people recruited by Rush Limpballs to create chaos within the Democratic community.

They are NOT Democrats!!

Yes BushCo failed, but what did Dems do? Chucklenut led us straight to hell and Dems followed him with their spineless bodies as usual. We are tired of being sold out by all-for-one corporate greed that’s leading the economy melt down just to make the 1% richer with no ethics or accountability whatsoever, while the other party bent over and did nothing to stand up to the BushCo criminals. It’s time to take the government back to the people. WWW.VOTENADER.ORG. We need to stop the two-party sell out now!

You won't take back the government by voting for Nader, you'll throw your vote away. I've yet to have a naderite answer this simple question. Why don't you give it a shot. If Ralph Nader was really serious about holding political office, then why has he never run for an office he could actually win such as assemblyman or congressman?

For some reason, the media today is again "spinning" the possibility that Hillary could be VP, claiming she is being "vetted." Judging from the fact that McCain's name is pretty much mud today, and from the fact that Obama has said, he will not be discussing his VP and we will know only when "he" makes the announcement, I am thinking this is the rightwing media's way of distracting from McCain's various gaffes.

As far as Clinton goes, Obama gets my vote no matter who he chooses for VP, even if it is Hillary. However, I hope and pray it isn't and I really don't think it will be. My guess has always been, Joe Biden.

Easy for her to say

Pelosi has been such an utter disappointment as Speaker that I don't listen to anything she has to say.

If she would START working for the AMERICAN people, then I might lend her an ear.

As it stands she has betrayed the Democratic party members in every respect.

Step down Madam Speaker as you do NOT speak to us!!!!

Nancy Pelosi does NOTHING that the DEM-Hierarchy (upper level of control) does not first TELL her to do. Nancy Pelosi could be replaced with a ventriloquist dummy.

Do not blame Pelosi for what the UPPER-HIEARACHY of the DEM-Party tell her to do, blame the Old #^&* DEM-Leaders for PAC/Pork/PERK/Payola selling out America. These Upper-Level people stopped dead the (new) DEM-candidates voted into Office in 2006 with citizen's-mandate.
