Sarah Jessica Parker's Reality Show "American Artist" Picked Up By Bravo

Sarah Jessica Parker's art competition reality show has found a home at Bravo.

The network has picked up "American Artist," from Parker's Pretty Matches production company and wunderkin producers Magical Elves, as part of its development slate. Bravo is expected to announce the deal Sunday at the Television Critics Assn. press tour.

The hourlong show has been described by the Elves team of Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz as a "Project Runway"-style competition series that takes on the art world. Aspiring artists compete to produce various styles of artwork (painting, sculpting, etc.), which is then judged by a panel of experts. The network declined to comment.

That format sounds awkward, in that, most artists work within one or a couple mediums. A fantastic sculptor may not know a thing about oil painting, etc.

I agree with you there. The art world is a world of specialization. Painters don't sculpt etc. It might be interesting to see how people take that all on - especially as there are artists who have someone else fabricate everything. Or it's made on a computer. And if the show doesn't feature this kind of work, then they are not really addressing contemporary art.

Curious about this show. Most people don't care about visual art much. They know their favorite singers and actors but can't name ten living artists. Plus artists take on much larger and complicated subjects than a pop song. They have their work cut out for them.

But I hope they invite artists over 28 because most artists take time to produce their work. Many are only hitting a stride way past 30 or 40 and beyond.

It's a shame there is so much hate for Parker. I guess people can't stand a powerful woman - (she was the producer for SATS, after all) especially a thin one.

I wonder if you will have to be 28 or younger to compete, like on American Idol. There are amazing singers over 28. Amazing artists, designers, actors, comics, over 28........­..

the operative word is ARTWORK, not singing, not comedians - those have already been done.

I agree about the age discrimination on these shows - over 28 doesn't appeal to advertiser's demographics, unfortunately.
