LOS ANGELES — Tavis Smiley is all wound up. His voice is rough from too much vocalizing, but the host of public television's "Tavis Smiley" talk show and public radio's "The Tavis Smiley Show" is on an oratorical roll about race, politics, and his fellow African-American, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

"There is no such thing in America as race transcendence, and Obama's going to find that out real soon," says Smiley, leaning into his words. As he sermonizes, he sheds suit jacket, tie and belt in succession, getting comfy in his spacious suite at KCET in Los Angeles after taping two installments of "Tavis Smiley" (Monday-Friday in various time-slots on PBS stations).

Despite the peaceful vibe inside his sanctuary, with its African masks and scented candle, Smiley frowns. "There's no such thing as 'post-racial' in America, because if you push the envelope too far, you're going to hear about it."

Smiley should know. For months he has been the object of an Internet firestorm for his perceived negative comments about Obama on commercial radio's syndicated "The Tom Joyner Morning Show."

Smiley found himself between race and a hard place when he criticized Obama on-air for choosing not to appear on Smiley's annual State of the Black Union cablecast on C-SPAN in February. Smiley's remarks sparked a blaze of invective by African-American bloggers, who questioned Smiley's loyalty, motives and ego.

After 12 years as a fixture on Joyner's show, Smiley delivered his final commentary on June 26. Smiley insists his departure was not a reaction to the flak, but rather a decision that he had been on Joyner's show long enough.

"Just because Barack Obama is black, doesn't mean he gets a pass on being held accountable on issues that matter to black people," Smiley says. "I'm not an Obama critic or a McCain critic. The term itself is dismissive and insulting."

For Smiley _ a multimedia entrepreneur who is an important voice in the African-American community, who owns his TV and radio shows, who has authored 11 books and created the nonprofit Tavis Smiley Foundation to empower youth _ the disparagement by black bloggers still stings.

His dilemma is also emblematic of the media conundrum of the moment for black and white journalists alike: how to responsibly and sensitively address the issue of race and couch coverage of the likely first-ever run for the White House by a major-party nominee who is black.

"We have an awkward history about how to talk about race in the nation and in newsrooms," says Gwen Ifill, senior correspondent for PBS' "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" and author of "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama," slated for publication early next year.

"I don't see any hesitancy about addressing it," Ifill says. "But I do think we are all searching for the language."

David Bohrman, CNN's Washington bureau chief, agrees. "It's still a sensitive topic, but I think the door's been opened to the conversation ... Whether or not that conversation will happen in a reasonable or superficial way _ I don't think anyone has a real sense of how it will play out right now."

Smiley will broadcast his talk show live to select markets from the Democratic convention in Denver Aug. 25-28 and the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn., Sept. 1-4.

"I want to do what I always try to do, which is to be authentic in my coverage," Smiley says. "I'm an advocacy journalist, not a journalist in the traditional sense. I believe my role in the media is to get people to re-examine the assumptions they hold."

That challenge is not always obvious on Smiley's talk show. In its five-year run "Tavis Smiley" has included a stew of both stars and politicos, from Obama, last fall, and Hillary Clinton in February, to Harrison Ford, Dustin Hoffman, and hip, young-skewing musical guests such as Ne-Yo.

But it is Smiley's role as vigilant media inquisitor _ and never mind political correctness _ that he seems to relish most.

"This is what I do _ asking critical questions," Smiley says. "Now some of you regard it as keeping a brother down, holding a brother back. Because you regard it that way, you don't understand that this is the role that I've always played."

I hope in eight years, Barack "tackles Tavis".
Meanwhile, he has bigger fish to fry.

It sounds like diplomatic prep for the earthling/ET summit conference.

Tavis, your jealousy is starting to make you look more like a nutcase. You are not going to get the attention that you are looking for through Obama. It won't work because you are not a likable person.

If Rev Jackson and Tavis Smiley are really as concerned about the state of Black America as they would have us believe, they would serve the community better by putting more effort into ensuring that African Americans REGISTER TO VOTE!!! and putting less effort into demeaning and demanding.

Worry less at this point about what Obama hasn't promised or committed to at this point - make sure he gets into office and to ensure this we need African Americans to VOTE.

Tavis Smiley is finished. Don't watch his show. Tavis is a Hillary boy and he's still mad at black people for voting for Obama, not Hillary. Get over it Tavis Nobody anymore. You don't speak for black people, you speak for yourself only. Why don't Tavis hold Bush accountable?

I say this having shared several evenings and events with him through the years.

The man is NOT a factor anywhere except in the minds of his corporate sponsors. He is 'dlc centrist ' with a major need to be near the well connected...the rich and the powerful. He is well known for doing the hacket bidding for his Clinton associations.

Smiley leaving Joyner's show is great for the community of honest ideas and unbought exchange(s).

The man is a legend in his own mind.

Although I found it odd that Tavis would criticize Obama for not showing up to the Covenant, I understood his point, and I think the firestorm actually helped Obama in many ways, (much like Jesse Jackson's disparaging remarks did)

But, I also remember he provided some pretty important interviews in the early days of Obama's primary campaign that provided context that would have been impossible for anyone else: the interview with Ted Kennedy on his endorsement; the interview with John Lewis on his painful decision to withdraw his endorsement of Hillary.

Regardless of how people view Tavis, he fills a niche that few could. And I will always be a fan, if for no other reason, just to hear him sign off with "keep the faith."

This writer does not agree with Obama's FISA position. However, when it comes to race, whether consciously, or unconsciously, Obama's approach to the issue of race is cosmologically sound! The principle is simple: We become what we think! And as long as we give life to racism, and all of its expressions, it will continue to be a force in our lives. Now this does not mean being naive about racism when it expresses itself. However, it does mean that those who perpetuate racial oppression, and the victims of that oppression, must END this caustic tango. But BOTH must stop in order to create a new reality! In Newton's first law of motion: "A particle will stay at rest, or continue at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force." Add to this; that mass and energy is equivalent, even thoughts are things!

Therefore, in this impersonal universe, stop, really means stop! And we are merely perpetually relaying energy put in application long before we were born!

Let me start by reminding folks that Tavis Smiley did indeed cite the backlash that he received in the wake of his effort to extort Senator Obama's attendance at his New Orleans forum as the reason for leaving the Tom Joyner Show. Smiley's efforts at making his own role race neutral is negated by the fact that he (Smiley) gives me the impression that he believes that Senator Obama "owes the brother one."
Second, I am no fan of Tavis Smiley.
Third, when I think of Smiley, I think of him as the 2nd coming of Jesse Jackson - passionate, militant, garbled speech, and a throwback. Yes, a throwback. There are a lot of us who are Black who have given up on getting that "40 acres and a mule" from the government. Instead, we opt for ways to earn that ourselves - through education, hard work and perserverance.

Here we go again.

Tavis is feeling a little lost in the wilderness. He got his biggest black audience from the Tom Joyner show, which he stopped doing after receiving all the criticisms when he tried to tell black people how to, and who to vote for. When they did not listen to him, took him on, he jumped out. He is so thin skinned, yet he wants to jump all over Barack Obama.

Tavis Smiley made his millions from black people. But he no more cares for black people than Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the old man on the corner or me, this immigrant-turned citizen that lives in this country now. Tavis' little gimmick is about to dry up.

He does not speak for me.

Memo to Tavis Smiley: Barack Obama is running for president of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Black people, poor whites and lots of others in between share many of the same problems.

What I want to know is this: What is Tavis doing about black children killing up one another in the streets? What is Tavis doing about teen pregnancies? What tangible results has Tavis annual Black State of the Union yielded for black Americans. Every year, the panel gathers to talk, talk, talk.

Each year we see the parade of talkers, with nothing to report. At least Tom Joyner works his behind off to collect monies to help black colleges. That we see. Go home, Tavis.

What I like about Tavis's position on Obama is that he dares to question Obama. Most of us Black folk voted for and supported Bill Clinton; so much for "the first Black president!

What concerns me is that the reaction to Tavis is much the same reaction that White folks have had about patriotism...America love it or Get out! If you weren't for the war you were a traitor, a misfit...ungrateful. We ought to be ashamed of ourselves.

I am glad like most of us that we have a Black man in the running for the head of this country, but that doesn't make him untouchable. There are many non-racial issues he has taken that we are not talking about. I mean don't forget he voted for immunity for the telecoms! You think they just spied on foreigners.

The appeals court in Virginia said that the President can declare anyone an enemy combatant and lock them up indefinitely...what was Obama's stand on that?! Who do u think that focus will be on? So question Tavis' intentions if you want. U might be right...but if you are wrong we could be in for more hell.

Obama should not get a free ride and a blind pass. Be happy for Obama and Black folks. I voted for him in the primaries...but check that dude out real carefully. Keep Obama under "heavy binocular".

We should never be afraid of relevant, important questions.

The question regarding Mr. Smiley is, does he have any relevant questions for us to ask ourselves at this time? It is not enough to say that Obama is underestimating the importance of race in our country. Perhaps it is very important to some people, but what is Mr. Smiley's point? That Obama should not be attempting to become our next president? That he is too this, or not enough of that?

Honestly, I have enjoyed much of what Mr. Smiley has done over the years, but I fail to see why I should care about his prejudices at this time in history. If he wants to say something, then say it. What is it, exactly, that is bothering him?
