In a radio interview with NPR, Batman Christian Bale talked about the violence felt inside the batsuit and said on London's red carpet that everyone has a dark side. The day before the London premiere, he stands accused of assaulting his sister and mother, a charge for which he was voluntarily arrested, is out on bail and has denied.

What I felt was the only way that I personally could make it work is if he truly becomes a beast when he is within the Batman costume. It does make you feel quite invincible.

"It has such protection on it, you know, you feel like you can achieve great violence very easily. You feel very defended as well and protected by it."

Meanwhile, at the London premiere Bale told Getty that "everybody has a shadow side.... Everyone has a dark side. That includes me."

That's exactly what I tried to tell the judge.

Guess we can tolerate some tabloid nonsense at Huffpo as long as it is from the Entertainment Section, and Huffpo keeps providing us with its normally excellent serious coverage.

Kudos to Christian, he should have shoved both of them out the door long ago. There is no real love lost between mother and son. Christian first became estranged from his mom Jenny about the time she gave up being a clown and riding elephants in a circus and her husband got divorced, married Gloria Steinem and had Christian come to live with him.

Everyone has a dark side? Even this guy? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaVPdxJe0Ps

The accusations sounds fishy. Why would a parent or sibling call the police for just shoving? If there were serious injuries the pictures would have been all over the tabloids. Seems to me that mom and sis are either attempting to extort money or jealous of Bale's fame. How sad that family members could turn on each other if this is the case. It doesn't seem that Bale has had a good relationship with his mother over the years based on his past comments or lack of praise for mom. Well, I hope it's not a serious matter for Bale's sake.

There's something fishy about this. I'm guessing the mother and sister are trying to cash in.

That's my thinking too. I can't imagine any mother would call the police on her own son no matter what he did. And the timing of these accusations is really suspicious. His movie is number one at the box office and shattering records and will no doubt push Bale into the big leagues. I would not be surprised if there's some extortion going on.

My first thought when seeing this on TV was "what kind of family member calls the police over a family argument that did not involve injury". His mother and sister are suspect. In any case, the facts are not known and negative judgments about Christian Bale's character should be put on hold.

I love you guys at Huffpo, but you need to fire the person in charge of your entertainment division. It reeks of the kind of yellow journalism and celebrity schadenfroude that scream at me from the supermarket tabloids. If Huffington Post is supposed to be an oasis from the mainstream media, how come your Entertainment section represents the worst of what the mainstream media does? If people want to hear about celebrity rehab or divorces or legal troubles, aren't there a million other sites they can go to? It's garbage journalism, and I hate to see you guys knee deep in the garbage. Let TMZ and US magazine handle that kind of stuff and lift the Huffington post up to be the kind of classy site it is supposed to be. Thanks.

Likewise. Between the deliberately misleading headlines and the spit-dribbled subject matter, it's like being with a classy date who thinks SBDs are funny.

Mom and sis told him they were going to see the new Heath Ledger movie.

Mixing his talk about a movie character with real life? This tabloid article just ended my visits to Huffington Post forever.

I agree, the way headlines are constructed on this site are straight up yellow journalism.
I too am at the end of my string with Huffpo.
Who can suggest a progressive news site that doesn't pull down it's pants just to get you to read a story.
Huffpo should be ashamed.

This site makes any of the tabs look like class act journalism...sensationalist nonsense.

BTW, from what we see now, he was NOT arrested, but was asked to come down to the station and explain himself, which he did...without charge.

a legal charge of assault merely means the threatening of violence. and i've heard it's an even looser definition in the u.k. than here. you have to add battery if there was actual physical contact.

In the UK, you can be charged with assault for putting your hand/s on someone - yes, even holding their sleeve, grabbing an arm, poking with a finger, not letting go etc. It's quite ridiculous.
I laugh when I see the comments that 'it's a family matter'. Why go to the police then?

Sad how Huffington Post sets up misleading headlines and takes interview captions from movies CB made and apply it to his alleged incident with family. Shame!

yes it is sad. I jast posted a comment similar to yours on the "Assault" story page. Glad to see I'm not the only one that has noticed this unfortunate trend. Misleading doesn't make the story more entertaining. It's disappointing to see.

And of course people are going to take his comment and use it as proof that he's prone to violence. It's pretty obvious to me why he said it. He's explaining how he gets into character so he doesn't think about the silliness of dressing up as a bat.

His mother and sister were trying to extract money from him.

"His mother and sister were trying to extract money from him". Soooooo, he should beat them??

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:17 PM on 07/22/2008

There's no evidence he "beat" them; as jant pointed out, there would have been a battery charge in that case. spiderbucket may be saying that they are concocting the charges to get money, not that they demanded money and he "assaulted" them in response.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:17 PM on 07/22/2008

Assult is threatening to beat them. Assult and Battery is telling them and doing it.

Further, he was accused of it, and not charged....however, I think we can all understand if someone gets angry at a relative and SAYS something that goes too far. I know I have.

Wow. Using his interviews on how he portrays the character - tabloids are loving this....
