Scowcroft

Former Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft, the onetime Bush 41 adviser, considers himself officially "neutral" in the presidential contest between Barack Obama and John McCain, and is willing to offer advice to either candidate, according to two independent sources familiar with Scowcroft's thinking.

That description of the former national security adviser's political loyalty conflicts with a Washington Post survey of campaign surrogates, which listed Scowcroft as part of McCain's retinue as recently as late 2007.

One longtime associate who requested anonymity said that Scowcroft's role advising McCain had been inflated in past reports.

"Scowcroft has an ongoing relationship with McCain that [started] before McCain was a candidate for president," the source told the Huffington Post. "Now that he is a candidate, he and Gen. Scowcroft talk from time to time. So there's no change in that pattern. He is not a formal adviser. Nor has he been. ... The daily phone calls regarding 'What's the issue of the day? What's the message on Iraq?' ... He never was engaged in that."

Still, the source confirmed that Scowcroft was not likely to endorse McCain in the future, and that Obama was just as welcome to solicit the former national security adviser's views. "Would he take Obama's call and talk to him about substance? Sure. But no, I would not expect him to come out and formally endorse Obama, or much less sign up with his campaign. But if Obama wants to talk [with Scowcroft] about the Middle East, Russia, China or whatever, he can."

The fact that such a foreign policy heavyweight in the GOP could sit out a presidential election, however, reflects the lingering tension between the "realist" camp of advisers, including Gen. Colin Powell, who advised President George H.W. Bush, and the neoconservative clique that gained influence during the tenure of Bush 43.

Rumors of a dramatic flip by some prominent realist Republican heavyweights have refused to die, however, as Barack Obama has occasionally hinted at his willingness to form a bipartisan cabinet if elected. Scowcroft has a position on Iran distinctly closer to that of Obama. On Wednesday, Time's Mark Halperin teased a "developing" report that "an organized effort is underway to get some big-name Republicans," including Scowcroft, to support Obama. A spokesperson for the Illinois Democrat refused any comment on Time's item.

A) Condi Rice
B) Colin Powell
C) Brent Scowcroft

I'm not sure I would put Condi in the same class of experts with Powell and Scowcroft.

Gen. Scowcroft is one of the good guys. I thank him for this olive branch to Obama because he would be a fine addition to the team.

Why stay with someone who not only doesn't have a grasp of military or geopolitical matters, but who will say ANYTHING about his opponent just to score political points?

Obama's trip abroad has made that aspect of McCain's opportunistic personality crystal-clear. I hope more moderate Republicans who have respect and expertise in their fields will openly support Obama (or, barring that, at least distance themselves firmly from McSame).

Alright, the world and the USA needs the commonsense approach that Scowcroft offers. We desperately need his knowledgeable counsel. That's what the country needs to stop all this political bickering and make our country great, all of us.

McCain is becoming a bigger and bigger embarrassment every day. Can you blame noted Republicans for wanting to yell from rooftops that they don't even know the guy!? LMAO

Even if Scowcroft and Powell don't openly endorse Obama, if they don't openly endorse McCain that's a major shift in trust. But, the explanation for this is probably pretty simple.

McCain doesn't appear to listen much, and so far, his only truly authentic character trait seems to be RECKLESSNESS.

I was just wondering, how does one advise McCain given what appears to be limited retention?

Brent is just being polite to MCSame. It simply means that he is leaning Obama after finding the old blowhole unfit to lead this country through the turbulence ahead.

Yeah, I had expected to see something like this w.r.t. Powell. Has he been sighted lately?

Why bring Powell on board? He is one of the main reasons we are "over there" and just because he was once the most respected black American in the world, bringing him on board will be pretty offensive to many of us who once supported him. Sorry folks, he was not just fooled into what he said...youwho think that need to read his resume to know jsut how inthe last 30 years he has been intertwined with the neocons and, by virtue of what is in his resume during Reagan's time, why we should disbelieve he was fooled.

Obama needs Snowcroft or any other Republican like the plague. There are enough dependable and smart Democrats around to advice on foreign policy. Forget about those Republicans who got us into these troubles. Give me Sen. Biden any time instead of any historical figures from past Republican fiascos.

So are we to assume that the Pentagon is neutral, as well? He's just one of the shills the Pentagon used to put out their message under the ruse of being a "military media consultant".....remember that little scandal??

Wasn't that the one that only NPR reported and the other networks wouldn't touch? Don't you just loved how the press is looking out for us, the little people? The founding fathers were so wise.

Advisor to Bush I is neutral. I read this as I am for Obama. Obama mirrors Bush I's policies more than McCain does.

Please! even though I said Scowcroft has some wisdom, Bush 1 was nothing to brag about! Iraq did NOT need to be invaded in 1991.

That's debatable. I'm as liberal as they come, but I supported the invasion. You couldn't let Iraq just take Kuwait (not to mention the access it would have given Sadaam to the Persian Gulf).

Unlike GWB, Bush 1 was a somewhat thoughtful and intelligent man, as were some of the people working with him--including Gen. Scowcroft.

I think the statement is a message to his Republican friends (as much as anyone) to consider supporting Obama over McCain.
