Chimp Steals Gun From Zookeeper In Japan

A chimp in Japan escaped the sweltering confines of his cage, and a zookeeper with a tranquilizer gun proved no match for this feisty animal. The zookeeper can be seen peeking his head and rifle over the ledge of the roof on which the chimp was resting before quickly crouching down, sensing the chimp had noticed him. The chimp pounced on the ledge, grabbing the barrel of the zookeeper's tranquilizer gun and snatching it away, leaving the poor human defenseless.

Score one for the apes.

The score quickly turned even, though, when all it took to subdue the chimp was the promise of banana.

Most zoos are prisons for animals. The confinement, boredom, sometimes punishment, just horrid, especially for the more intelligent creatures. No wonder we read about apes escaping now and then. Ah well, at least they're better than circuses.....

Not a fair description to say "most zoos", maybe a lot of the archaic ones, but most modern zoos are research and conservation facilities where rare and endangered animals can be studied and cared for in somewhat natural facilities. Obviously I would rather have it that amazing animals like chimps could thrive in the wild, but when the Congo is being slashed and burned and chimps are being eaten in the bush meat trade, a simulated habitat is a paradise in comparison.

It should be against the law to keep these people in cages, and it should be illegal to experiment on them. They are as smart, or smarter, than many homo sapiens. Spain has granted legal rights to the great apes, already.

Zoos are a horrid relic of the Victoria era. Time to turn them all into botanical gardens.
