Appearing on Anderson Cooper 360 tonight on CNN, Time Magazine columnist Joe Klein said that John McCain's comments Tuesday that Barack Obama is willing to lose a war to win an election were the most scurrilous he had ever heard by a major party candidate.

On his blog on the Time Magazine website, Klein wrote that the comment "smacks of desperation."

is there any reason to expect anything different from mc(ain?

i can understand the indignation, but being surprised and outraged over it is ludicrous. it's how the right has ALWAYS done business, and there's no reason to think they're going to change now.

These kinds of comments are going to make Obama a lot of money. He just got another $50 from me. We're going to beat this McCain and his disgusting rhetoric, mark my words. His candidacy is toast.

McCain says "Obama would rather win a campaign and lose a war" and "the troops will come home in victory and not in defeat" and "even if it takes 100 years" ...

It is not unreasonable for the N.Y. Times, the Iraqui government, and the American people to understand what John McCain's "victory' means. What are the objectives by which is rhetoric is to be evaluated? What is this precious victory?

When the Iraqui democracy and currency is stronger than ours? (not too hard) When it is safe for McDonalds and Starbucks? When Haliburton has bled all they can out of it and there ain't no more? When we are losing fewer troops per month to bar brawls and traffic accidents than to sniper fire and car bombs? When the real Iraqui GNP (without oil) exceeds our spending there? When Shiiite, Sunni, and Kurds can agree on how to govern peacefully (could take a hundred years)?

What is American presence in Iraq accomplishing?

If John McCain's candidacy is based on "victory in Iraq" it is not unreasonable for us to know what that means.

MBryant says. When Shiiite, Sunni, and Kurds can agree on how to govern peacefully (could take a hundred years)?

Or it could take centuries. http://fairuse.100webcustomers.com/fairenough/latimes948.html

The sectarian nature of the war between Shiite and Sunni Arabs in Iraq reflects a centuries-old battle between Persia and the Arab world.

For those of us in the Western World a comparison would be England and Ireland. The dispute is over the interpetation of a religion. The result is if you do not think the same as one side the other side is willing to attack or even kill to prove their point.

What is happening in Iraq is not a war. It is an occupation.

But, if you want to look at it as the administration and its brainwashed followers want to look at it. It is a conflict that is part of the "war on terror". Although there are areas of progress in Iraq. The situation in Afghanistan is spiralling out of control, and we are still no closer to controlling al-quida in Pakistan. They are again growing in power.

With that along with the way that the conflict in Iraq has bankrupted America proves that we are LOSING the "war on terror".

So, MR MCCAIN, YOUR STATEMENT IS BOTH WRONG AND IGNORANT!

I have a feeling he will completely disgrace himself at the debates.

Perhaps he can get one of those wire thingys like the one that Bush wore to one of his debates, and Rove can feed him his lines.

I've been thinking that as well, since McCain makes such frequent factual errors. However, for him to really lose a debate the moderators have to ask questions that are framed in such a was as to allow discussion of real issues, not the cosmetic ones such as "do you think you repudiated Rev. Wright's comments early enough to satisfy the American people" and "looking at it microcosmically, do you agree that the surge has improved security in Iraq?" (the latter is a paraphrase of one of Couric's questions to Obama in a recent interview)

John McCain is not too bright and has stated so many falsehoods which have been accepted by the media as fact that he is completely comfortable continuing to do so. His charge against Obama is just one more example of this and finally some reporters are calling him out I believe most of the moronic mainstream media will still give him every advantage.

To all Americans particulatly purveyors of the MSM, I sincerely believe that this article weighs true for most people in the rest of the world.

Obama will change hie tune on Iraq withdrawl when he gets deeper into the general election. Right now he's just afraid of his base. Unfortunatley for you all he needs more than his base to get elected, and Ihate to brake it to ya, but most of the country doesn't think like people who post on this site.

That is where you fail to observe reality. About 70%-79% feel this way. Check your daddy's approval ratings lately?

It sure does up north here. Especially this statement, quoting Robert Parry in the Article below, since the rest of the world, mostly NATO countries, were asked to pick up the slack left from the Americans pulling way back on their own commitment to destroy the perpetrators of 9/11.

"However, in February 2002, at the crucial moment when al-Qaeda’s leaders were on the run and Afghanistan was in desperate need of rebuilding, McCain became a leading advocate for the neocon rush to war in Iraq.

McCain appears to have been “completely wrong” in that judgment, a strategy that has damaged U.S. standing in the world and has played into the deadly hands of Osama bin Laden."

But apparently us Socialist Canadians, who have been calling for far more troops on the ground in Afghanistan for over 2 years now, didn't know what we were talking about.

The comment was par for the course, unfortunately...

I would have thought that the rumors started by the Bush Camp during the 2000 primary, regarding the McCain's alleged offspring would top the charts in a 'scurrilous' chart.

How quickly McCain forgets...

With everyone of these baseless accusations, my respect for John McCain is diminished. He must remember that respect is earned and can be lost forever much quicker that it was attained.

Senator McCain: you are on the verge of losing it all. Is supporting your neocon cronies worth it?

"smacks of desperation" No Kidding. McCain ought be thanking the media for not paying closer attention to him, he's an extremely poor candidate and once that becomes evident, he's going to start grasping for straws and slinging mud. The probably is that his desperation is too evident, and people aren't buying what he's selling.

So "Obama would rather loose a War to win an Election"

Yeah, well McCain would rather "LOOSE A COUNTRY the U.S.A. then LOOSE A WAR"

I watched this since I was bored. His criticizing of McCain was brief, he later went on to say that McCain's titanic gaffe was not that major. But if Obama made this kind of mistake, the press would have a field day. But then again, Obama doesn't make them earn good seats for better access on the plane or throw barbeques for the press corp.

I guess all the kissing-up worked on this one, it won't even be that big of a story tomorrow.
