I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The images from Barack Obama's trip abroad have been, one might say, picture perfect. From the stern shot of Obama with Gen. David Petraeus to the somber photos from Israel's Holocaust Museum, one guesses that Obama's campaign couldn't be more pleased.

As for John McCain -- well, that's another story:

MONDAY

McCain in a golf cart with George H. W. Bush at Walker's Point in Kennebunkport, Maine:

TUESDAY

As oil companies announce their massive quarterly profits, McCain makes a campaign stop at Buxton Oil Inc.:

WEDNESDAY

McCain takes questions from reporters about a range of domestic and foreign policy issues -- in front of an aisle of cheese:

Then, via Jed Report, McCain holds an event in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and 900 of the 1600 seats in the auditorium remain empty:

I am an Obama supporter. I have trouble understanding the vehement anti-McCain posts. Obama will win. McCain has been a dedicated public servant for decades, with human flaws. He was the voice in the Republican wilderness who had the courage and intelligence to oppose Rumsfeld and call for his resignation.

I could have been a McCain supporter in 2000, the man I respected than is not the man who is campaigning in front of the cheese cooler and riding arround in Bush 41's reserved golf cart. I think a cooler photo-op would have been running in Bush senior's custom Fountain CC fishing boat. I don't like to rank on his age either, but McCain's campaign is leaving the door wide open.

I think it's more that people are hurt by what McCain has let himself become.

For years, many on the left saw him as someone that, though they may have deep differences on various policy matters, operated with enormous personal integrity, openness, and empathy.

McCain has become a parody of his former self; saying and doing thing (sometimes personally, sometimes through his campaign), that many would never expected from him.

I think most of us are disappointed that in his waning days, in his search for the presidency, he is allowing decades of hard-fought reputation and widespread admiration to be dismantled, piece by agonizing piece.

McCain has been a servant of McCain for decades would be the most accurate way to put it.

Like all those other great "public servants" along the lines of Cheney and Rumsfeld who go to work in someone's administration for 100k a year, and voila! several decades later they have 100s of millions

Course in McCain's particular case, the majority of his loot came via a slick second marriage.

I am also an Obama supporter and decry the fact that the McCain I admired in 2000 has gone Bush on everyone.

Me too. After Bush fried McCain in SC in the 2000 primary, the John McCain you and I knew rallied forward after a while, but then when he saw the fanatical success of the GOP at the time, he handed in his hat, stood up behind the GOP and Bush, and the real maverick disappeared forever. He sold his soul to the devil for the sake of his own political survival, and independent voters like me have just lost all faith in him. Sad. Now he is backed into a corner and trying to swing hits to get himself out.

Wakeup America, this guy looks as awkward and uncomfortable as Bush. Don't be surprised when he can't handle the job.

The contrast we've seen, in recent days, between the candidates couldn't be more dramatic.

Obama, the candidate representing desperately need change, breathing new life into the American politic, enthusiastically embraced by the world, bringing a new occasion for hope, not just for America, but for all on the planet.

McCain, the candidate of Bush/Cheney, confused and dangerous warmonger, condescending of those so naive as to hope for a better future, oozing ignorance and hate, champion of fear.

As November draws closer, McCain will become even more desperate, and his conduct even more repulsive. The Republican Party, realizing how poorly the future bodes for their kind, will join in the lies, dirty tricks and personal attacks, for that is what they do best.

Even now, the choice is remarkably clear, but the differences in the candidates will become more and more defined as time passes. This time, sanity and the common good will prevail over the insane policies of the neocons and the radical, right wing Republican Party.

There is, then, reason to hope. Indeed, hope for the future has always been what America is about. Hope is not a bad word, as McCain and his Republican Party would have you believe. Their condescension be damned.

McCain's belief that the US could have won the Vietnam war and can still "win" the war in Iraq is proof that he is unfit to be President. He says he knows how to win wars. No rational person would make a statement like that. It is an example of arrogance pure and simple. Wars are not black and white situations, always varying shades of gray. I favored invasion of Iraq as a last resort to get rid of Saddam's regime and confiscate his WMDs. I also favored withdrawal the moment that was reasonably accomplished. I did not favor making Iraq safe for democracy, nation building, reconstruction, etc. Let the Iraqi people repair their own country and set up their own state without our meddling, even if they first had to have a civil war to sort things out. Sometimes it takes a civil war to build a stable country for the long haul. Is what has happen thus far to Iraqis better than if they had had a civil war four years ago? The answer is obviously no. For some individuals, having a military background can cloud their judgment and be a negative factor in their qualification for the Presidency. McCain is one of those individuals.

No advise from someone who "favored" the invasion of a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 needed. If it was ok to go after Saddam's WMD, you must feel it's fine to go after Irans.

It's logic like yours that got us in this mess.

What WMDs? Have we all forgotten that the whole blasted thing was a LIE? Why are we still there now that we know we were lied into this mess? If things are so rosey over there, why can't we come home?

And if McCan't knows how to win wars, then why the heck haven't we won this thing already and gotten our boys and girls out of there?

Make no mistake, the whole thing has been a lie from the beginning, BEFORE 9/11 and it' still a lie now. We're there forever. Might as well get used to it. We're building an oil empire there on the backs of innocent Iraqi's who did NOTHING to deserve this.

Fifty eight permanent bases and the biggest embassy in the world. What do you think that's about? Like Papa Johnny Mac says, we're there for at least the next 100 years.
