It's been three weeks since his blue-eyed baby debuted in this world, but Thomas Beatie - better known around the world as the Pregnant Man - can already say this about his daughter's personality: "She's easygoing and mellow and intelligent."

On June 29 at 8:55 p.m., Beatie, 34, a former female beauty pageant contestant, made cultural history as perhaps the first legally transgender male to give birth, bringing into the world a 9 lbs., 5 oz. baby girl named Susan Juliette.

"She's so precious, I just can't stop staring at her," Thomas tells PEOPLE in his first interview since he and wife Nancy returned with their bundle from Bend, Oregon's St. Charles Medical Center. "Just holding her is the best feeling in the world."

Susan - named after Thomas's mother and conceived through artificial insemination with donor sperm - arrived after 40 hours of labor, with Nancy at Thomas's side acting as his coach.

"When Susan finally came out, it was like in slow motion," says Thomas. "I was full of wonder." Echoes Nancy: "There were tears of joy."

Both father and daughter came through the birth in perfect health. "I weigh two pounds less than I did before I got pregnant," adds Thomas. "And I don't have a single stretch mark!"

The frightening thing is that there are people either so dumb, or so blinded by this transgender ideology, that they don't know or refuse to acknowledge that she's a woman. Which brings to mind these passages from 1984:

'You are a slow learner, Winston,' said O'Brien gently.

'How can I help it?' he blubbered. 'How can I help seeing what is in front
of my eyes? Two and two are four.'

'Sometimes, Winston. Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three.
Sometimes they are all of them at once. You must try harder. It is not
easy to become sane.'

In 1984, Big Brother or the principles of Ingsoc determined what the people believed on any given day.
Today, instead of merely determining what a good percentage of the population believes, it would appear that many members of the public have let Main Stream/Corporate Media usurp their higher brain functions altogether. Apparently it's not just the neo-cons who create their own reality.

This is NOT a pregnant man. This is a woman who decided to become partly a man and then decided to go back to her femenine side to have a baby. Just because a female has her breast cut off and takes testosterone to become manlike does not make her a man. This is not a miracle! It is normal for women to have babies, as a matter of fact I think thats how we all got here. This is a freak show. I just hope the baby will be ok with all the confusion.

Ok so by your reasoning it makes no difference what identity an individual has chosen for themself, nor do you have any responsibility to respect that choice. By your reasoning, it is the ideas and opinions of others that determine ones identity, and it is on the individual to conform to what everyone else says they are, rather than the other way around. Hmm, I guess all those PSAs that we push out to kids to not give in to peer pressure and to be themselves just don't mean a thing. I mean afterall, by your reasoning it doesn't matter what identity a person decides to adopt for themself, YOU can simply declare them to be whatever you want and that's all that matters, right?

No, it's biology.

If a transgender person, who is born the wrong gender from what their brain tells them, lives as a man and considers themselves a man, then I also agree that that person is a man. If you can't see past the genatalia, then you are lacking understanding and insight into a transgendered person's reality.

so the only people who can choose their gender are people born with both (or rather their parents choose for them)? is everybody else is just stuck with what they got whether they like it or not? gender is more than genitalia. are you a man? have you always felt like one, has that always been your identity? (or the reverse if u are female) now imagine that the parts you were born with feel (emotionally) wrong. like your body is a stranger. imagine that you don't know why but you feel like the opposite of your born genitalia. imagine how difficult that is for a child growing up.

thomas delayed his reassignment surgery so he and his wife could have a baby. his wife was unable to conceive. and as far as the law is concerned, thomas IS a man.

I know quite a few of them actually, who are still waiting for the reassignment surgery or simply can't afford it. They are still people in my eyes deserving of respect and understanding.

I like this couple and their story. It tells me that the need for love and family (in all shapes, sexes, and colors) is the unifying bond in all of us. Who can not relate to wanting a loving partner and a family? We as people are so much more alike than different. If we could only focus on our commonalities and not our differences we would be a more harmonious people.

What about all of the male hormones "he" was on for years before he got pregnant? Sure, he stopped taking them a while ago. But who is to say that the baby will not be hormonally messed up? Something about this is very troubling. There could have been/may be so many complications with this poor child. Beatie already chose his lifestyle... and then chose his sex... why do his preferences/decisions/selfishness have to affect an innocent child? I'm not doubting that the child will be raised in a home full of love, but who knows what type of medical problems their selfishness inflicted on it?

"He" needed hormones in order to grow a bead. That means there were hormones in "his" body when he became pregnant.
Very dangerous for the baby.
What a selfish WOMAN this person is. Because....whether you want to admit it or not....only a woman, with female plumbing, can get pregnant.
Men still can't get pregnant. If a woman cuts off her boobs, takes hormones to grow a bead and keeps her uterus, she is still technically a woman.

Are you a doctor?
I'm betting that he actually has a doctor who is capable of letting him know whether or not their is a danger involved.
Transgendered men can get pregnant if they still have a women's reproductive organs, as this story proves. For those of who respect all of humanity, Thomas is a man simple because that is the way he feels on the inside. It's his brain, not his genitals, that dictates his gender. That's the very essence of what being transgender is.
As for selfishness, I wonder why you don't decry heterosexuals who take fertility drugs to pop out too many babies ... or those who bring a child into the world and then abuse it or neglect it. If the family is loving and looking out for the health and welfare of their child, there is nothing selfish about having and raising a family.

Sure wish everyone would stop referring to this person as a man. The plumbing is wrong, and if you took away the hormones regiment, this person would return their original state of womanhood. Sorry, but that is how it is, Thomas is not a Man. Thomas is in fact a woman that is taking hormones that prevent her from developing the rest of the anatomy of a woman, and facilitates the growing of facial hair. Still a woman by all medical standard, by birth and by gene pool.

I guess you don't know any transgender individuals. They're born with ambiguous plumbing, very often. This particular person has chosen to keep his uterus, and it's functional, but many are born without a uterus, or with a uterus but no vaginal canal, or otherwise ambiguously formed bits. Try to extend some loving understanding towards them and feel happy that they have established a family. Ignore the parts that make you uncomfortable.

You mean like the part about making an innocent baby part of their selfish freak show? I feel so sorry for that little baby and so disgusted by its "parents."

Not a man. Only women have babies. If you have a uterus, you are a woman. It's science.

This is innaccuracy by the media pure and simple. They may as well report that the earth is flat.

Quotes or not, it is still sensationalistic. It's something the Enquirer would publish.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I mostly ignore this kind of content. However, that headline bothered me enough to view the comments. Sure enough, bigpaws beat me to it.

This is not really news at all. A woman had a baby. Okay so now she presents as a man. Where's the story?

We are not all born unambiguously male or female. TG individuals undergo a lot of testing before they are permitted to change their gender. It's not easy to go through the transition. Some individuals are born with a uterus but no vaginal canal. Some are born with testes but no other male reproductive bits.

True, but Beatie was born a complete woman and still is, only minus the breasts that could have nourished the baby.
