I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Schumer

Senator Chuck Schumer whetted the palate of many Democrats today when he suggested, for the first time of the election cycle, that their dream of a 60-seat majority in the U.S. Senate could be within the party's grasp.

"I know you'll ask me, can we get to sixty?" the New York Democrat and head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said on Wednesday. "And I'd say it's very difficult given the map, but its not out of the question. And I would have said the same thing two years ago... if you would have asked me [then] could we get six seats a hundred days before the election. I would have said it is very difficult but it's not out of the question."

Schumer's proclamation comes as the Republican side of the aisle is running for political cover. GOP leadership has all but given the green light to vulnerable members to takes stances that differ with the party if it will help with their campaigns. Meanwhile, the National Republican Senatorial Committee is being drastically out-raised by its Democratic counterpart. Schumer highlighted five states as ripe for the picking -- Virginia, New Hampshire, Colorado, New Mexico, and Alaska -- as well as six others that could be close: Oregon, Minnesota, Mississippi, Kentucky, Maine, North Carolina. If nine seats were to change hands (and if the caucus allows Joe Lieberman to stay in its ranks), Democrats would have the filibuster-proof 60 that has long been viewed as a pipe-dream.

"We have had tremendous success recruiting," said Schumer. "And our candidates are proving to be even better than we thought. They are just a stellar group of people. They are smart, they tend to be non-ideological they tend to be mainstream and middle of the road. They are just what the doctor ordered in terms of winning elections."

Cognizant that the expectations game matters in the electoral process, Schumer later threw a wet blanket on the idea of an overwhelming Democratic landslide -- though it's hard, with the current diverging trajectories of the two parties, to take as sincere the Senator's warnings.

"So what's the bad news for us?" he asked, rhetorically. "The bad news in a certain sense, it's not bad news but it's a reality. So I call it bad reality. This is the reddest map in a very long time. The majority of seats we are seeking are in deeply red states. If you look at the thirty-five elections, two are in Wyoming and two in Mississippi. There are thirty-three states. But if you look at the map, the majority of states are either in deep south, great plains or the mountain west. Not traditionally positive areas for democrats. And of the Republican seats we are seeking, only three are in blue states, which are Maine, Minnesota, and Oregon, none of which are very blue states."

Just like the promise we heard in 2004 and 2006. Just vote Democrat, and we will change? Didn't buy the hype then, don't buy it now. The Democrats will pick up seats only because so many Republican seats are open. 90% of Congress gets reelected, despite their poor performance. They pitch a new line and fail to deliver. All we get is excuses. Obama will win the Presidency and the Dems will win Congress, but nothing will change. Same lobbyist, same special interests. We will get the same excuses and same complaints. The people will take it in the shorts and the fat cats will get fatter.

With a 60-seat majority, the Democratic party will be faced with its toughest challenge yet: how to find completely NEW excuses for doing absolutely nothing about anything.

Yep.... by that third party we've all been dreaming about. It would be totally safe to do it since Rethuglicans couldn't take over, and if the Dems are being useless anyway, we might as well go with a new party. The energy to make it happen could be there.

That party doesn't have to be huge at first. It need not get one-third of the vote. But if it can get enough to take away the majority from both of the other two, it would be a real player.

At this point the "smart money" is on 57, but I can see how 60 is possible. There's a couple of states where a lot depends on how much Obama's "ground game" pulls some candidates across the finish line and/or how disaffected the base GOP vote becomes.

It's good to have a lofty goal anyway.

Trust me, if the Democrats get a change of nine (but not ten) then they will hold their noses and stiffle their gag reflex and welcome Joe.

I could be wrong, but I thought it was 49/49 with two independents right now. If that is the case we need 10 with Joe or 11 without him. The article lists 5 that are a good chance and 6 that are possible. If we do all we can to support Obama, he might be able to pull some across the line. I don't know who the other independent is. Anybody know?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:09 PM on 07/23/2008

It's former Republican, now Independent, Jim Jeffords of Vermont.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:46 PM on 07/23/2008

He now caucuses with the Dems.

Bernie Sanders from Vermont, and he is a self declared socialist, so I wouldn't worry about him caucusing with the Republicans. That gives us 50, with Libermann as 51. Now Obviously we are going to win seats and have a larger margin in the Senate, so it would be in Joe's best interest to stick with the Dems so he could have a chairmanship of a committee, otherwise he'll be powerless.

If we can get to 58 then Senators Collins and Snowe from Maine could help end filibusters since they are the two most liberal Republicans in the Senate. So I'm hoping we pick up ate least 7 seats, but more would be great.

And still Schumer does not become a vocal advocate for BHO. None of the NY reps have...my local HVO Obama campaign tried to get Hinchey, Gillibrand, Hall...all the area congresspeople to become involved in getting BHO elected by vehemently and demonstrably endorsing him.

Nothing. They're too busy taking care of their own campaigns. Tragic.

It seems that the Republicans never had to have sixty seats to enact all of their heinous acts. Having sixty seats gives them the luxury of not having to play hardball with with the opposition in The Club. They need a Majority Leader with a set o' brass ones who will whip out the Nuclear Option if necessary.

Indeed! Russ has proven to be a DEMOCRAT with a spine. Didn't know him at first a few years back but man has he come up big. I think Russ has learned on the job well and has the intuition of a good leader. Teamed up with the big O, Howard Dean, and others such as Kathleen Sebelius, the Kansas governor possibly in the White House as Vice President, Russ would accomplish many goals the middle class has been yearning for.

That's because they had the White House too. If you've got the oval office you don't need a veto proof majority.

Polls were invented by the republicans to make the spread between candidates look close ,, so when they steal the election it doesn't look bad.

We can remember 2000 and 2004 elections , just look what a crook has done to this country which should not have even been in office.

Polls were invented by the Republicrats to make us think there was a contest. They already divided up the spoils. The elections are a facade to make the people think they are involved. The Republicans and Democrats are both run by the same special interests and same lobbyist. Don't buy into their game.

I live in Virginia and it's already a lock that Mark Warner (former governor, moderate Dem) will win the seat being vacated by retiring John Warner (old as dirt GOP).

Mark Warner's challenger is former governor Jim Gilmore. Gilmore left the state in complete turmoil, followed by even more turmoil by Republican George Allen (remember him?) and then Warner had to clean it up.

Basically, Warner took a $4 billion deficit and created a $2 surplus by tightening the budget and stewarding the tech boom in VA (especially the Northern VA and Hampton Roads regions). Warner was such a popular pro-business governor that his Lt. Gov. Tim kaine won on the promise of continuing Warner's plan.

Last poll I saw, Warner is ahead of Gilmore by double-digits. Gilmore has closes the gap a couple points in recent weeks, but I think that has more to do with the media focus returning to McCain vs. Obama after the heavy coverage of the Dem primaries. Now that there is actually a Republican in the news, Gilmore probably gets a little lift. Unlike most Republicans nowadays, Gilmore is NOT trying to move away from Bush either. Gilmore openly supports Bush's policies of the last 8 years and during the first debate with Warner, he was asked to "name one difference he has with Bush" and proudly said there aren't any.

Well, there you guys have it. Virginia will deliver one more Dem.

I am also a fellow Virginian and a Republican. I look forward to Mark Warner trouncing Gilmore. I remember the Gilmore years AND the Mark Warner years.

I have yet to hear a bad word in my circles about Mark Warner but mention John Gilmore and you will get an earful...

Because for the last 7 years, Democrats have made the gigantic mistake of blaming Bush for our problems rather than Republicans as a group.

Bush is the greatest Republican President in history. He's enacted so much of the long-time Republican agenda he makes Reagan look like a stoned slacker. He is not incompetent, he made no mistakes, and his policies are straight off the Republican Party platform.

If Democrats had been partisan, McCain's numbers would be Bush's approval rating. But Dems are so frightened by the thugs across the aisle they won't tell the truth.

IT'S NOT BUSH! IT'S THE REPUBLICANS!

According to polls, about 83 per cent of the American people think this "Democratic" congress is even worse than the administration, perhaps because we expected something from them. What are you going to do, Mr. Schumer, with even a hundred seat majority?

The polls always ask what is the opinion of 'Congress', not the 'Democratic Congress'. So Republican Incumbents have plenty to worry about.

IMHO, It would slam the door on the Republicans who've successfully blocked many of the initiatives put forward by the razor-thin Democratic majority.

The problem wasn't that the Dems were given that bare majority, it was that not enough Republicans were removed from office for the majority to be effective.

Of course, if one is myopic in the extreme or has a talent for spin it's easy enough to blame the technical "majority" for apparent inaction, but it's also somewhat disingenuous.

But when those same people are asked if you approve of the job the Democrats are doing compared to the Republicans they say the Democrats are better. If Republicans would stop holding our country hostage with filibusters and started working with the Democrats on legislation maybe the people wouldn't be so ready to throw the Republican party away for a generation.

We have a big problems with over half of the democrats because they are really republicans which have been elected on our democratic ticket..

One thing you have to give the republicans they just keep finding ways to getting into office by hook or crook.
Lying is a word the republicans have down pat. They will use other party to place their candidates on to get elected and corruption is the main policy for getting their way.
They will use ID cards , electronic voting machines to change and delete democratic votes, use phone fraud to stop democratic voters from getting to the polls.
You name it and they have done it whether or not them have been caught is a different story.
Schumer , Feinstein , Blue Dogs , Peolsi , Reid , Ford and the rest of these republican should not be re-elected.
We can thank Schumer and Feinstein for the new attorney general which is given Bush real live dictatorial powers.
A lot of the blue dogs are supporting republicans in their district and McCain for president.
Florida democratic party is now infliltrated with republicans.
