Dunst

So there we were, with Kirsten Dunst at last night's 303 Gallery party in Chelsea, jawing away about the things you normally talk about with a press-shy A-lister, when the actress abruptly changed the subject. "Actually, I'm gonna plug the documentary I'm directing," she announced. (So THAT'S why she agreed with talk to us. We tried not to look hurt.) "My friend Jacob Soboroff is executive director of this nonpartisan organization called WhyTuesday.org. It's a Website. So we're making a documentary together about why we vote on Tuesday."

It's all about America's agrarian roots, see? November is the end of harvest, Dunst explained, and the Tuesday vote allowed Sabbath-observing country folk enough time to horse-and-buggy it to the polling stations before Wednesday market. Worked all right back then, apparently. But today, "it's not a holiday, and we're one of the lowest democratic countries in voter turnout," Dunst explained. Lest her doc turns out to be dutifully evenhanded, we demanded to know Dunst's personal opinion on the matter: "I would keep it the same day, just make it a holiday." You heard it here first.

Kirsten is absolutely correct, but not about Election Day. I think she's talking about the two day observance of Rosh Hashana.!

She wasn't in treatment for "rehab". She was being treated for depression.

....Some people are making fun of her here (and the article seems to as well) as if she's wrong.

But she's not wrong, she's, as others have said, absolutely right o_O

Putting it on friday, saturday, or sunday would also be terrible ideas-- it'd mean that highly observant muslims/jews/christians would be unable to vote.

So, leaving it on a tuesday but making it a national holiday makes complete sense.

Why the hell is huffington post making fun of her? Push this. When voter turn out is high, Democrats win, because the country is progressive. When voter turnout is low, Republicans win-- they've said so themselves. They say we inflate voting numbers, we say they suppress them. These accusations exists because of the truth that rings in both.

It's so reassuring to know that as long as we are hot, people will pay attention to what females have to say.

If you want to increase voter turnout, do what we do in Oregon. We vote by mail. No system is perfect, but our system is ahead in terms of convenience and turnout.

Sheesh! If it was Monday it would interfere with Monday night football. Same for Thursday and Friday. Nobody votes on weekends and a Wednesday would conflict with all the Doctor's and Dentist's golf day. So it's Tuesday.

Are you kidding? In California, we had early voting in the primary, and Saturdays were when the lines were longest.

I don't care what day of the week it is, it should be a national holiday.

Deep comment... you should be so proud of yourself.

I think it speaks to Dunst's sense of herself that she hasn't felt the need to get some factory teeth. Hers make her distinctive in an industry where everyone is beginning to look clonish. I think prominent eye teeth look great and it saddens me when people with a unique smile suddenly look like everyone else.

Blah blah blah. Do you have an eloquent answer as to why she is an useless rehab junkie too? Or is it just about her teeth?

"Scandalous": Does your mother know you're on the Internet unsupervised? That's dangerous for an 8-year-old. BTW, you're immature even for an 8-year-old.

HAHAH when you don't have something useful or witty to say you go for the easy childish comment. Good on you. I wonder what that makes you for stooping to my level to reply to me?

If election day becomes a national holiday everyone would take Monday off and leave town for a four day weekend. Then nobody would vote. Also, billions would be lost in tax revenue and productivity.

Oh wait, i forgot about blah blah blah blah blah when I was forming my opinion on this. Give it a rest, the market will be fine. Let's have a national voting holiday.

Move it to Wednesday then. That should nullify (or at least contain) any 4-day weekend nonsense.

And the tax revenue loss would probably be negligible. You know the retailers will have Election Day Sales. "Vote for a new winter wardrobe!"

Kirsten is exactly right.

Sen. Clinton vowed to get three things done following the 2004 election (and irregularities in Ohio): 1) make election day a national holiday -- even elections workers can't vote because they can't leave their posts long enough to 2) mandate a paper trail, or receipt to go with your vote and 3) institute instant run off voting where voters can rank their prefs. That way if I choose Nader #1 and Gore #2 and Nader loses big time, Gore still gets my vote and it's not lost. It would encourage more parties and better reflect the will of the voters. Of course, none of the three ever got done.

Thank you, Kirsten!! Carl would be so proud of what you're doing!

While she's at it, she should explain why we don't have year round schools in most places.
