John McCain is still playing catch up to Barack Obama.

As the Illinois Democrat speaks before the picturesque Victory Column in Berlin today, the Arizona Republican is doing a slightly less exciting form of German outreach. He is having a lunch meeting with small business leaders at a German restaurant in German Village, Columbus, Ohio.

The presidential race, it seems has boiled down to who has the greatest German appeal. McCain's appearance at Schmidts' restaurant, a "Sausage Haus" comes after the RNC launched several advertisements in towns named Berlin.

Among the items he may have ordered include: Sauerkraut-Bratwurst Balls, Hoffbrau Schnitzel, or the Bratwurst, voted the "Best Wurst" by Columbus Monthly.

Look closely at the photo showing the front of the Sausage Haus...

WANTED: A close-up photo of the Bavarian dress face cutouts. There are some on flickr. I don't have Photoshop, but anyone who has it could easily stick McOldie's pruny mug in the face cutout - [snark]

And we thought McCain didn't know anything about economics. Clearly, McCain got just as much political bang for his campaign buck by speaking to small businessmen at a German restaurant in Ohio as Obama got from going to Berlin and speaking in front of an audience of 200,000 Germans. I'm sure McCain looked very presidential chocking down a Bratwurst. The economics of McCain's strategy is brilliant! If Obama goes to Mexico, McCain goes to as Taco Bell. If Obama goes to Italy, McCain goes to a Pizza Hut. If Obama goes to China, McCain goes to a Panda Express. If Obama goes to France, McCain goes to a McDonalds and scarfs a large order of French Fries.. And consider the logical progression of extending this approach to the national campaign. When Obama is campaigning in the Garden State, McCain gives a speech at a Frank's Nursery. When Obama campaigns in the Aloha State, McCain gives a speech wearing an Hawaiian shirt with a lei around his neck. When Obama campaigns in the Show Me State, MaCain gives a speech and drops his drawers. The possibilities for McCain to display his economic know how are endless.

I still can't believe he went to a German restaurant today. I really thought people were kidding - no one could be THAT tone-deaf to the inevitable comedic comparisons.

Are Jon Stewart's writers managing McCain's campaign?

At least he's campaigning in the heartland of America instead of the heartland of freakin' EUROPE!

Yes, MacBoy, you should hang your head in shame that a representative of your Country has been well received.

McCain said that he'd rather speak before a crowd in Germany as the President than as a Presidential candidate.

I guess McCain will NEVER EVER speak before a crowd in Germany.

Doubtful that the Germans and Americans in the crowd as well as the English, Dutch and Swiss would show up for McCain to repeatedly call them his friends. The English people I know , one of which took the chunnel and the train to Berlin to hear Obama speak, see McCain as more of Bush, they haveseen the disasters Bush has brought to the US. Even as they have financially profited from the disaster Bush has been they are sympathetic to our problems. They hope we have the sense to elect Obama, but as my cousin has said, America elected Bushie twice, we have just about given up on you.

This really strikes me as an attempt to belittle Obama's German visit. The faithful, the same people who thought purple band-aids at the '04 RNC to ridicule Kerry's heroism were just hysterical, will love this. Overall, ain't gonna work. Most people probably won't get it. Most of the public, like most people here, will think it's a joke article, then think it's a feeble imitation of the Obama event or a stupidly-unnoticed coincidence. Most will chuckle. (Squeeezin' 'n' wheezin'? He should have brought Ed Schultz along!)

Sounds like a great restaurant, though. Mmmm.
