From The New York Times:

Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, appeared on a British radio show to say that he was "privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet and the U.F.O. phenomena is real."

Mitchell, a member of the Apollo 14 team, has long held these beliefs despite the fact that he himself has never seen neither an alien or a U.F.O. The Times' story has an excellent collection of more information on Mitchell's beliefs.

Mitchell's resurgence in the media was prompted by a radio interview that he did yesterday with a British radio show. Audio of the show is available below.

Past videos of Mitchell:

It is the ultimate human conceit to think we are alone and unique in the Universe. It all goes back to our religious beliefs, that a god created the Universe and our humble little planet for its own amusement. With billions of galaxies, each with billions of stars and therefore trillions of planets, life has to have evolved on countless others, besides our own. And statistically, half of the inhabited planets in the Universe will be more advanced than ours and half less advanced. So it is entirely possible that some other civilizations are technologically capable of visiting other planets, including Earth. To deny this is absurd.

"it is entirely possible that some other civilizations are technologically capable of visiting other planets, including Earth. To deny this is absurd." ???

I DENY THIS. It is absurd to believe that we or any other living beings could visit each other. We are ALL too far apart. We couldn't even communicate. Right now we are sending all sorts of "messages" at the speed of light out into the universe. But HOW LONG would it be before the message reached another planet that had intelligent life that could receive our signal? LIGHT YEARS!!!!!!!! Then if they sent back a response, it would take more LIGHT YEARS before "we" got the message.

Marlyn,

Your denial is dependent on the speed of travel. If it possible to travel faster than the speed of light, then what do you say?

Your denial is also dependent on the idea that we are the most intelligent life form. This of course would require only an average level of human arrogance.

You're assuming you know more than "they" do about the universe. If you'd seen one ignore Newtonian physics, you might ponder the the following:

1. Distance: There are a whole bunch of star systems within 50 "light years" of Earth. If someone figured out how to travel very very fast, then this is less than a human lifetime.
2. Time: It is possible that other beings (just theorizing) might have longer lifespans than humans. It is also possible that what people think they have been seeing (if they are extraterrestrial, and not just some still unknown natural phenomena) could be robotic probes. Indeed, if WE could explore something 50 or more light years away, how would WE do it?
3. Just because no one responds to our signals doesn't mean no one heard them. Maybe they are screening their calls.
4. Just because we do not hear signals from others does not mean that signals could not exist. What if a nearby civilization (within a hundred or so LYs), had already developed communications systems that did not rely on electromagnetic waves to carry a signal as we do? We would never hear the old signals because they may have been using something different from before the time when we discovered wireless radio communication.

People should expect some proof before accepting anything, but the arguments about Time and Distance being serious impediments to a more advanced civilization are also absurd. We still don't really know what causes gravity.

"To deny this is absurd."

Just because something is "entirely possible" doesn't mean that it's even remotely probable, which is significantly more important. Something that is "possible in principle" should be very skeptically examined before it is taken as "possible in fact". It's "possible in principle" that God did create the Universe and our humble little planet for his own amusement. There is no way to disprove it. But that doesn't automatically make it possible in fact.

It is very probable that there is some sort of life besides ours in the universe. And I agree with you that some of those lifeforms would possibly be advanced far beyond anything we can imagine. But "statistically, half of the inhabited planets in the Universe will be more advanced than ours and half less advanced" just isn't true. Without any extraterrestrial forms of life to compare ourselves to, every piece of information used to determine a statistic like that is a guess. It's possible that we are the absolute pinnacle of intelligence - and our artifacts are the absolute pinnacle of technology.

Take a look at the Drake equation and make the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space really small, like one over a trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillon, and the probability of it happening becomes all but impossible.

Don't forget that probabilities changed based upon what you know.

Take 100 coin flips, when you get to the 99th one and they're ALL head's up, the odds that the NEXT one will be up is pretty darned small, but the NEXT toss is STILL 50/50...

And it isn't a conceit that a technologically advanced "intelligent" life form has an interest in us? What do we offer that would be attractive to such entities? If "they" have the ability to travel space at the speed of light, or better, than our "measurable" time is meaningless and so would be our existance.

Look, I am not a big conspiracy guy nor an Area 51 Martian supporting guy either but, when a creditable person, with a military background, and a former astronaut speaks about a cover-up… it does not lend ANY credibility to the story if Huffingtonpost places a silly, humorous, photo of two people mugging for the camera wearing ET masks.

You’re mocking the messenger right off the bat, making his statements appears silly as opposed to objectively reporting on his story.

There is a very good book by Ivan T. Sanderson called "Invisible Residents". It was originally published over 30 years ago and is based on official reports by military and police around the world. The book tells about unidentified craft seen rising out of the water and flying away by naval personnel and others over the last few hundred years. I was especially intrigued by the book because as a navy patrol pilot with over 3200 hours, I have on two occasions witnessed numerous fireballs coming up from the ocean surface and continuing up to very high altitude, presumably into space. This was an open ocean area with no shipping traffic. I don't think these are from another planet, but there's something strange happening out there, that's for sure.

Excellent! It would appear that a lot of these advanced craft can travel as easily through water as they can through planetary atmospheres, as they can through the vacuum of space. Think about it. If you were to visit a primitive planet that didnt know about "the others" and it was 75% ocean it would be logical to have your bases under water in the middle of the most remote open ocean areas. From everything you describe, alien craft are the most logical and sanest explanation for what you saw since we obviously have no technology capable of this!

Edgar Mitchell says "They've identified quite a number of planets now, that very likely could be life bearing planets."

Is this true? I know that some stars have been shown to have planets, but none of these planets have been identified as able to support life. Since life exists on Earth, it seems most likely that there are other life bearing planets in the universe, but we haven't located any yet, have we?

We don't know, but very possibly, yes. We have identified several star systems with planet at roughly the right range of orbit that we think could do it.

BTW, there's another body in our own solar system that we think COULD possibly support life - it's not a planet, but a moon... I'll leave finding out which one as an exercise for the reader! (hint, if using google, use the site: tag in the search so you get only good scientific hits - just pick the right sites!)

Given the vastness and the approximate age of the universe it would be naïve to think that live could or did evolve only on this tiny chunk of rock. I can also see why the governments would like to keep something like that secret. What I don’t get is why far more advanced species would want to have anything to do with us. This formed the CIA and the NSC and the Marshall Plan/ Truman Act were part of the cover up. Why would Truman sign these bills on his airplane. I'll tell you why its because he was terrified not of Russia but of what happened in Roswell. Call me crazy but do your own research and make your own conclusions. On that note, If it were just a weather ballon why would the US Gov't have over 100,000 documents relating to a weather ballon. Part 1
Exactly. I lived for over a decade in New Mexico and spent some time in Roswell. I met some of the people involved in the case--they were as credible as the day is long! The weather in that area can be pretty fierce, with wicked electrical storms. I think craft got knocked out of the sky by lightening. Immediately after WWII the US government was on edge over what they had discovered about Nazi and Russian technology. At first, they werent entirely sure who the hell was visiting us. There were so many UFOs checking out that area in the 40s because of the nearby White Sands Proving Ground where the first atomic weapons were developed & tested and because the only military flying group trained and qualified to deploy nuclear weapons (they flew the Enola Gay and dropped the Nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki) were based in the town of Roswell. Yeah, we really put ourselves on the aliens' map when we split the atom and started detonating nukes willy nilly. UFOS were and still are seen often in Nevada, too, near the Nuclear Test Site near Area 51.

Part 2
Everywhere in the world where Nukes are detonated or stored are visited. We dont yet fully understand Nuclear Physics and what the full consequences are of splitting the atom are. It causes perturbations and rents "holes" in the fabric of space/time/gravity. It is very dangerous as we use it today. I think they are very concerned, no so much for us, as for themselves and this region of space. Just like on this planet, everything "out there" is connected to everything else--this causes shock waves on interdimensional levels. If you pull the wrong thread, the whole thing can unravel. Will we wake up and quit this nonsense in time?

Kucinich doesn't deserve to be the butt of these jokes.

He didn't claim he saw aliens. He saw a UFO. So have tens of millions of other people. The term doesn't mean "aliens." It just means they saw something in the air they couldn't identify.

Most people, including Kucinich, understand that it could have been a satellite or something.

Personally, I love Kucinich, much better than Obama, particularly his articles of Impeachment and his political platform AND his UFO sighting since this subject is a love of mine for 45 years... and I wish he was our candidate.
