Apollo Astronaut, Edgar Mitchell, Claims UFO Cover Up

From The New York Times:

Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, appeared on a British radio show to say that he was "privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet and the U.F.O. phenomena is real."

Mitchell, a member of the Apollo 14 team, has long held these beliefs despite the fact that he himself has never seen neither an alien or a U.F.O. The Times' story has an excellent collection of more information on Mitchell's beliefs.

Mitchell's resurgence in the media was prompted by a radio interview that he did yesterday with a British radio show. Audio of the show is available below.

Mitchell was a paid consultant for the tv series The X -Files. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a stake in the success of the new X-Files movie which COINCIDENTALLY is premiering this weekend.

Seems to me that we are the best evidence that it's very possible that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe. Earth can't be the only place in the entire universe where conditions are suitable for life.

Just because Mitchell went to the moon does not mean he isn't crackpot, but nor does it mean that he is one.

Thus far there has been nothing but circumstantial evidence of UFOs and some fuzzy photographs and videos, none of which constitute proof.

Sure, I'd love it if it were true, but nothing I've yet seen or heard is enough to convince me.

It's a hoax! The clue is that Mitchell said, "the phenomena is real." It should either be, "the phenomeNON is real" or else, "the phenomena ARE real."

He's obviously trying to give us a signal that what he's saying is false. He must be speaking under duress -- under the influence of some person or persons who want him to spread this myth!

He wasn't talking about the use of the word to describe anything, he was saying that Mitchell mismatched his tense.

Phenomena is plural. Phenomenon is singular. Anyone who is smart enough to KNOW the term "phenomena" should also know that it is plural.

Plus, um, it was clearly a tongue in cheek response.

Yes. To be plain, I was just making a tongue-in-cheek joke, poking fun at "X-Files" type conspiracy theories.

It would be really cool to believe that space aliens have visited Earth, but I remain unconvinced that there's a cover-up. It's just too implausible that the government is holding evidence that they've successfully kept secret for so many decades.

No problem about your question... it's really hard to tell when someone's being ironic, just from written words. Conveying irony depends so much on tone of voice, timing, and other nonverbal communication. I should have used a smiley or something.
