John McCain has been courting Hispanic voters heavily. But according to a new Pew Research Center poll, it hasn't done him much good:

Hispanic registered voters support Democrat Barack Obama for president over Republican John McCain by 66% to 23%, according to a nationwide survey of Latinos conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, from June 9 through July 13, 2008.

The presumptive Democratic nominee's strong showing in this survey represents
a sharp reversal in his fortunes from the primaries, when Obama lost the Latino
vote to Hillary Clinton by a margin of nearly two-to-one, giving rise to
speculation in some quarters that Hispanics were disinclined to vote for a black
candidate.

...

Obama is rated favorably by 76% of Latino registered voters, making him much
more popular among that voting group than McCain (44% favorable) and
President Bush (27% favorable). He now appears to be even more popular than
Hillary Clinton among Latinos (73% favorable).

George W. Bush took 40% of the Latino vote in 2004, a record for a GOP candidate. According to Pew's results, the long-term Hispanic shift Republicans hoped for hasn't materialized:

In addition to their strong support for Obama, Latino voters have moved sharply
into the Democratic camp in the past two years, reversing a pro-GOP tide that had
been running among Latinos earlier in the decade. Some 65% of Latino registered
voters now say they identify with or lean to the Democratic Party; compared with
just 26% who identify with or lean to the GOP. This 39 percentage point
Democratic Party identification edge is larger than it has been at any time this
decade; as recently as 2006, the partisan gap was just 21 percentage points.

Good for a VERY diverse and complex demographic. Politicians--Republicans in particular--often have a tendency to assume that the "minorities" are stupid just because the pols have done everything in their power to deny education and expertise to those not coddled like they were.

This sends a message that the pols and the MSM are the ones out of touch with reality, and that those they assume are stupid enough to fall for their flagrant lies are considerably more intelligent than they give them credit for. Now, if only we can all base our votes not on spin or soundbytes, but on issues and policy, we might have an election to be proud of.

Gee, I thought last week's headline was all about how Obama had nailed the Latinos in polls.

Guess not?

And why not?????

Obama is the epitome of the promise that America once held out to the world. That no matter who you are,, no matter the humble, modest or LIMITED beginnings. By all the courage, strength and wisdoms you can gather,,, by tooth and nail,,, you can educate yourself, improve yourself and even scratch work and claw your way to the top.

Forget the Presidency. Forget all our hopes for Obama and OUR combined future. Senetor Barak Obama,,, PROVES,,, huge accomplishment and success is still possible in America.

FOR ALL!

He is our greatest example,,, this DREAM is STILL SO.

An inspiration to millions of American children, Hispanic, First Nation, Asian, Black or White.

My gosh people. If profile had been run on Obama as a child, the odds given his achieving HALF of what he has become, would be,, ONE in a Million. What he already IS.

Get it. The things we seek as Americans,, the things we preach to our kids about the DREAM that is America,,, stands there now,, IN THE FLESH.

Not a fairytale or myth.

But a HUMAN BEING!

Why shouldn’t Hispanics vote for Obama????

He is them, their dream, their HOPE,,, for their children. The American DREAM LIVES and it is walking around WITH US. Read and Learn about him, of his wife, his kids, and the values that MAKE UP this man.

You think Fox News or Couric will tell you the truth? NOT!

READ. Research.

All the best

Awesome post. I tell people this same thing all of the time.

The MSM wants to slice and dice the electorate to make people think that Obama is having such a problem with every group.

"reversal" in the sense of this headline has a pejorative connotation, insinuating a "reduction" in support, when the opposite is what the article reports. Perhaps a more accurate headline?

Gosh, I knew exactly what the headline meant about reversal...he had been on the low side and now surged ahead...his position reversed. maybe you live in the economic world where reversal has taken on that negative connotation. Whether it was an accurate headline probably depends on how one has been trained or what kind of thing dominates one's life. A stock market person would see it negatively while a teacher would see it as meaning a change of direction from what it had been in either direction. He had been very low when running against Clinton. Nobody else here will say it, but perhaps her speech asking her supporters to now support Obama counted to them as much or more than it did for others. I know it did for my foreign born neighbor.

To my Latino brothers and sisters in America who still thinks that John McSame or the Republican party cares about you ...

Next time you have a chance, take out a map and see what part of the country votes Republican ... it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

http://www.electionprojection.com/index.shtml

See which parts are colored red ... if you look close enough ... it's easy to figure out. Our African-American brothers and sisters have been in America a whole lot less than the Latino has been here ... since when did the Republicans care about them ... and you suddenly think McSame or the Republicans care about the Latino or Latino issues. Since when?

Changes are going to come when we get real with ourselves first. Voting is important. And voting for change will make the difference.

The propogandists at NPR (or at least on Morning Edition) will be VERY disappointed. They've been working tirelessly to try to sell the notion that Hispanics don't like Obama, even going so far as to do a week-long series at one point, without ever citing any data to support their claim.

I first read about this supposed reversal at CNN this morning reported by Ed Hornick quoting Mark Hugo Lopez.

I'm sorry to see this fallacious information spread by The Huffington Post as well. Comparing the Democratic primary results to General Election polls is like comparing apples to oranges.

CNN's article reported a May poll with Obama/McCain at 62/29 percent compared to 66/29 percent now. So where is the reversal.

The IS NO reversal and the comparisons are fallacious.

I hope The Huffington Post either removes this post or corrects it by showing the information is fallacious.

The article is pretty clear that the reversal is over the last two years, not the last two months, so it's quite correct

"Latino voters have moved sharply
into the Democratic camp in the past two years, reversing a pro-GOP tide "

I'm sorry to say but I must agree with you. IMO HuffPo in the last month is slowly becoming a MSM..

Most recently in the Headline of two articles,. which did not match the stories.

Republican vote suppression strategery won't be able to overcome all the demographic shifts this time. Corporate media still wants a horse race, and they'll "recalibrate" their exit polls come November.

..but this time the need for change and disgust with the current Unitardy Executive will seal the deal.

I hope.

I agree. I think it's going to be a landslide. George Bush has just killed the GOP. And Obama is the anti-Bush. That's the part of his attraction that the Clinton's either misunderstood or were helpless to combat.

i'm a democrat because i want the role and size of govt to increase. i want the govt to give us universal healthcare, since it is now deemed a right by so many people. the govt always knows best.

I know sarcasm when I read it. You might want to reconsider and vote Republican because the size and debt of the federal government has grown under both Reagan and Bush. And, yes, health care is considered a right by all the civilized nations in the world. How awful.

I am a democrat because for the last eight years Republicans have astronomically increaased the size of the debt, waged a war we cannot afford with American lives and treasure, have allowed Wall Street to go on a "drunken" binge unstopped, have stood by idly while our housing market has collapsed and threatened the very core of our financial system, because the Republicans have allowed our once mighty military to become over-committed in an ill-thought ill-planned and poorly executed war in a country that did not attack us... Republican government is a destructive force. Republican government risks the liberty of the many for the profit of the few. Republican government has shown itself incompetent to manage in natural disaster and chosen military conflict... If you like things they way they are, if you prefer to whine (like the sarcastic commenter above), if you believe nothing could be better, then vote for the Republicans. But, if you believe it's time for a Change. If you want change from the current path, of 8 years of the Republican Bush Administration, if you want to move America back to the path of greatness, vote Democratic, vote Obama. The choice is crystal clear.

What you say is totally true. But I am a member of the Green Party because the Democrats took impeachment off the table. They have failed to end the war and bring the troops home like they promised if they gained control of Congress. They have voted for every war funding bill. They confirmed, Gonzales, Alito, Mukasey, Roberts, and Ashcroft. While holding lot os hearings and investigations the result has been, well, nothing. The Demowon'ts continue on in the same vein as the GOP and can't wait to get their turn at ripping off Americans. The choice is clear, anyone but a Repug or a Dimo!

How large did the Federal Governement grow under the Republicans? How large did the debt grow? How far has our standard of living fell?

You may want to switch to the Republican side shroomingnewman. They are fulfilling all your dreams but healthcare...and what will you need that for when we are are dead due to global warming?

Seems the size of government has grown just fine during the current republican administrtion....more active duty military, more military tanks, planes, humvees, bases, etc. Bigger budget deficit and socialized economic system that lets us all pay for the excesses of bankers and mortgage companies. I would have been quite happy if the only growth had been universal health care.

Latino voters have much more common sense than Appalachian blue collars. Latino are coming back to Obama who will better serve their interests while the white blue collars are supporting their suppressors.
