John McCain has been courting Hispanic voters heavily. But according to a new Pew Research Center poll, it hasn't done him much good:

Hispanic registered voters support Democrat Barack Obama for president over Republican John McCain by 66% to 23%, according to a nationwide survey of Latinos conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, from June 9 through July 13, 2008.

The presumptive Democratic nominee's strong showing in this survey represents
a sharp reversal in his fortunes from the primaries, when Obama lost the Latino
vote to Hillary Clinton by a margin of nearly two-to-one, giving rise to
speculation in some quarters that Hispanics were disinclined to vote for a black
candidate.

...

Obama is rated favorably by 76% of Latino registered voters, making him much
more popular among that voting group than McCain (44% favorable) and
President Bush (27% favorable). He now appears to be even more popular than
Hillary Clinton among Latinos (73% favorable).

George W. Bush took 40% of the Latino vote in 2004, a record for a GOP candidate. According to Pew's results, the long-term Hispanic shift Republicans hoped for hasn't materialized:

In addition to their strong support for Obama, Latino voters have moved sharply
into the Democratic camp in the past two years, reversing a pro-GOP tide that had
been running among Latinos earlier in the decade. Some 65% of Latino registered
voters now say they identify with or lean to the Democratic Party; compared with
just 26% who identify with or lean to the GOP. This 39 percentage point
Democratic Party identification edge is larger than it has been at any time this
decade; as recently as 2006, the partisan gap was just 21 percentage points.

Watch Lou Dobbs' head explode.

For the most part Hispanic Voters will be underrepresented in the national telephone polls because of language barriers. If English wasn't your first languge would you want to suffer through a telephone poll?

they keep saying it's going to be a "close race", I find it hard to believe.
I did believe that Gore was going to get in too, so I am still not uncomfortable with all these polls.

While I agree that Lou Dobbs gets carried away and such, I think he is doing a service by reminding everyone about where the next terror attack is gonna come from. ;)

All you neocons forget that, instead of millions of Mexicans coming across the border, it very well could be millions of AL QAEDA coming across the border.

But oh no, we can't talk about, or think about, stuff such as that. ;)

Neocons are the ones running this country right now - and they need not be reminded of a fear they planted themselves... and if you think about it - millions of Al Qaeda deserting the Middle East by hopping on a boat to Mexico would be a bit difficult to conceal - or if there was a surge of Catholic Mexicans converting to Muslim... either way, comparing immigrant Latinos and extremist terrorists exposes your true fear: Texano Music

I agree, additionally, American's without land lines are terribly underrepresented in this country as well.

The technology they use for polling is outdated and needs a serious upgrade.

Obama canceled a previously-planned stop to visit thousands of American service personnel, including troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan being treated at Landstuhl, so he could hold a political rally for Germans and go shopping in Berlin. Now that’s a nice set of priorities for a man who wants to become Commander in Chief.

If this is true, it means the cranks have someone besides Nader voters to blame for w's presence in the White house.

what is sad is that you feel that way; if we all believed that we are all from the same planet as opposed to the same race, creed, etc.; we would be in a much better world. we all bleed the same red blood, just look at what is happening on our planet.

Sad that diversity will filter its way through our population and people will look at each other as humans without regard to race?

You 'sad' comment speaks volumes. Tell me if I'm wrong: You have no ethnic friends, you haven't traveled outside the U.S., and you have no interest in people who don't look like you or share your same culture.

Your lack of exposure to diversity and culture manifests itself as fear of the unknown.

Get over it. Get out there. Embrace it. Coexist.

Pretty misleading headline. Obama has been doing very well with this group since clinching the primary race.

Yeah, it is pretty crappy headline work, but the line is in the article:

"sharp reversal in his fortunes from the primaries, when Obama lost the Latino
vote to Hillary Clinton by a margin of nearly two-to-one"

The way the headline is written assumes that anyone who supported H'illary would be voting for Mc'cain, which just isn't true.

the pundits made all that fuss during the primary basically calling latino voters racist and now look at the poll.

Only older Cubans are still playing that McCain game. The younger ones are AMERICANS, not Cubans and they will vote for Senator Obama.
