Terry McAuliffe Makes VP Pick: Not Hillary

The former national chairman of the Democratic Party who ran Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign this year told 200 Democratic activists in Fairfax County Tuesday that Virginia Governor Tim Kaine would be his party's best choice as Barack Obama's vice presidential running mate.

McAuliffe was adamant in his recommendation of Kaine as the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee Tuesday, although he stressed to the News-Press after his speech, which included an informal half-hour question and answer period, that the ultimate choice will be Obama's very personal one.

However, the fact that he proposed Kaine over his own candidate and long-time friend, Hillary Clinton, suggested that he knows the Clinton option is off the table.

I agree, no one cares what Terry says anymore. I admire his hard work and loyalty but his opinions and views are too PREDICTABLE. And the way he can keep a happy, excited face as the water is rising over his head, tells me he is the "ultimate used car salesmen of politcs". When I see him on T.V., I just change it because his personality depends on who's paying today.

It is hard to argue with Terry McAuliffe about Gov. Tim Kaine being an ideal candidate for VP. I have always felt that. Virginia is a RED STATE turned "PURPLE STATE", as Democrats have the Governorship, and pretty soon, both of the U.S. Senate seats. Its a state that is in serious transition because Northern Virginia is wealthier, more culturally diverse, and, at the moment, more politically robust.

Now, Obama is expected to win two other Southern States: (1) Missouri, due to the uber-campaign efforts of Sen. McCaskill, and (2) Florida, because he is crushing McCain right now in fundraising in that state. But clearly he would want Virginia as well.

Having Gov. Kaine as the VP means Obama wins Virginia, and, North Carolina too. And, as a Southerner, Gov. Kaine would likely shore up Obama's solid appeal in Georgia, South Carolina, and Mississippi, which are probable for Obama given that Libertarian Presidential Candidate Bob Barr is polling in the 5% to 8% range in all three of those states - taking votes away from McCain. Moreover, Kaine, who wears his enthusiasm on his sleeve, would be the perfect surrogate to maximize the turnout among young people (18-35) who are going to come out for Obama in numbers never see before in a presidential election.

I still believe that Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is the BEST choice for Obama. We'll see.
