Terry McAuliffe Makes VP Pick: Not Hillary

The former national chairman of the Democratic Party who ran Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign this year told 200 Democratic activists in Fairfax County Tuesday that Virginia Governor Tim Kaine would be his party's best choice as Barack Obama's vice presidential running mate.

McAuliffe was adamant in his recommendation of Kaine as the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee Tuesday, although he stressed to the News-Press after his speech, which included an informal half-hour question and answer period, that the ultimate choice will be Obama's very personal one.

However, the fact that he proposed Kaine over his own candidate and long-time friend, Hillary Clinton, suggested that he knows the Clinton option is off the table.

McAuliffe has been wrong before. A lot.

That said, neither Clinton nor Kaine are my first choices. I'm becoming fairly neutral to Clinton...considering that she didn't take her aspirations all the way to the convention and keep playing fallacious math games with delegate counts...but Kaine's just a little too "centrist" for me. Sure, he's a good strategic move, but he's not going to challenge Obama very often, unless Obama starts leaning REALLY far to the left. Nor is he really all that inspirational. In fact, he reminds me a lot of Dukakis. Clinton would probably be a better choice...most people on the Obama side have let most of the crap her supporters flung at Obama and his supporters slide. I still like Howard Dean as VP, though. Obama already has Dave Axelrod running things, anyway.

But seriously, Kaine is just fine being personally opposed, but unwilling to make it illegal. That is the very essence of choice: my choice may not be yours, but I won't hold your choice against you.
