TAMPA, Fla. - Barry Bonds in pinstripes? If nothing else, the New York Yankees plan to talk about it.

Yankees officials gathered for high-level meetings at their spring training complex Thursday, a day off for the team before it begins an important three-game series at Boston.

Missing injured sluggers Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada, the Yankees plan to consider ways to improve the team for the stretch run before next Thursday's trade deadline. They've already added first baseman Richie Sexson, who was released by the Seattle Mariners.

Co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner acknowledged he'd mention Bonds, the indicted home run king who became a free agent when the San Francisco Giants did not bring him back.

"I'll mention it. We'll cover everything," Steinbrenner said before the meetings began. "No stone will be left unturned."

In addition to Hank Steinbrenner, his brother, co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner, president Randy Levine, general manager Brian Cashman and special adviser Gene Michael were among those at the meetings.

Matsui has been on the disabled list since June 23 with a balky knee that could require season-ending surgery. Posada could also be looking at surgery for his right shoulder, after an MRI exam showed fraying in the tendons around the labrum.

Both are trying to rehab, and their progress over the next week could go a long way toward helping the club decide what moves to make before the non-waiver trade deadline on July 31.

The recent play of the Yankees, who have won six straight since the all-star break, could also play a role in what moves they make. New York started the day 3 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Tampa Bay.

"We're playing great. That's the key thing," Steinbrenner said. "Considering we're not 100 per cent because of the injuries, it's pretty impressive. Where we can add, we'll look into it."

Never been a Yankee's fan but may turn into one. I'm sick of Bud Selig making Barry the Poster boy for 'roids. I'm glad Steinbrenner will stand up to Selig. Bonds wasn't the only one accused, and he shouldn't be the only one held responsible IF they can even make the charges stick.

Yep... it appears Bonds did do 'roids to compete against all the other guys who were doing 'roids. The funny thing is that 'roids elevated his ability well past any other active player. Love him or hate him he was one of the greatest players to ever play the game.

I went to a Giants game a few weeks ago, sat right behind the catcher and was so bored by the 7th that I just got the family up and went home. I sure would have liked to see Bonds hit one over.
BTW, I was sitting in a crowd of thousands of people who were all drink alcohol and eating steroid enhanced hotdogs, many of these people where on drugs.

Wrong year. Time to fall face first on the lawn again. I guess you at least figured out that the real game was behind you. All you had to do was ask.

It's obvious you're not a true fan.

Thanks for coming out but please don't come back, baseball doesn't need you.

Go ahead, Yankees, make our day. America's most hated sports franchise hires America's most despised cheat. Don't forget to bring in George W. Bush as the new General Manager to complete the trifecta.

The whole steroid issue is BS. They should made it legal instead of criminalizing it to the max.
This is one issue that supposedly proggressive Dems are totally wrong. Guys like Waxman and Biden get up on their soapboxes and have no idea what they are talking about.
Stop wasting government time on this issue that has sidetracked this country from the real problems.
I reccommend a movie "Bigger, Stronger , Faster" a documentary that was in the theatres not long ago, I'm sure it will be on DVD soon. Waxman looks like a total bafoon.
Also what is up with the Dems with the XM and Sirius merger. Why are they preventing 2 companies that are losing money from trying to succeed.
The Dems appear to be in the pocket of the radio industry on this issue. WTF.

......The respect Cl-emens commands goes well beyond the baseball world. He hangs out with Ge-orge B-ush and his wife, B@rbara, even building a horseshoe pit at his home for the former president. He has a standing invitation to dine at the White House. He plays golf with J0rdan.

Unless you start looking into where R0ger Clemens support went in the last two elections. THEN, it makes perfect sense.

....yeah, MLB's been tried and convicted of being BORING in the first degree!...a bunch of steroid, growth hormone and amphetaimine- addled prima donnas taking 3 hours and 40 minutes to play a game that used to take 2:20 to play.... little action, deadly dull, crawling pace, 5 or 6 pitcher changes per game, guys hitting .235 making 3 mill per year...its a corrupt sport that has lost its magic and is losing its fan base......when does football season start????..

Only those that know and can follow the intricacies of the game are the true fans. Football is much easier to follow so I understand your point.

..finally, something in the new york yankees organization bigger than george steinbrenner's ego---barry bonds growth-hormone distorted skull!...mark mcgwire's rapid and sudden exit form baseball right after his home run record was set ( he could have been an effective dh in the american league) was due to steroids causing telltale severe hip arthritis..at least he had the decemcy to subsequently to walk away form the limelight......the fact they yanks would even consider bringing in this indicted liar bond seems okay with the yankees neanderthal fan base--- nothing surprising there....

I don't care about steroids. At the end of the day, sports are just entertainment, and baseball is a lot more entertaining when guys are hitting home runs.

Maybe you could volunteer to visit high schools and help distribute steroids so they can hit more home runs.

Baseball is more important than entertainment; just ask your husband.

It's interesting how Clemens doesn't elicit 1/100th the rage and self-righteous disgust the Bonds receives.

He elicits every bit as much rage with me. I can't stand the cheating, right-wing ass. The reason that he probably doesn't elicit that kind of rage with other people is that Clemens isn't on the verge of toppling one of baseball's most cherished records. Clemens has 354 wins in 24 seasons compared to Cy Youngs 511 wins in 22 seasons, and only 46 shutouts compared to Walter Johnson's 110 in a 21 year career. He has 4,672 career strike-outs compared with Nolan Ryan's 5,714. Ryan lasted 3 more seasons than Clemons.

But that couldn't possibly be it, could it? It's racism, right?

I've hated Clemens since he hit Piazza in the head on purpose, effectively ending his career (not to mention the broken bat throwing incident).

But I know what you mean.

I think a big part of it is that Clemens didn't break Hank Aaron's home run record. I will say there's still a double standard regarding a person's skin color, but I don't think it plays a big part in this instance.

I think it's the HR record and the outrageously arrogant crap that comes out of his mouth when he's interviewed.

I did not follow Bonds' early pre-steriods career. Has he always stared after his homeruns with such self-conscious self-aggrandizing self-satisfaction? His figurative big-headedness supercedes his literal big-headedness, both conditions unattractive to at least this fan.

I hope they sign Bonds, I hope he, and they, get caught doping. Then I hope the pinstripes turn into the 21st century version of the 1919 Black Sox, cause they been getting away with it for too long to go unpunished. Forced sale of the team would be a dream come true.
