Dems

Lost amid the media frenzy over Barack Obama's tour abroad is recognition that this week has arguably been the most successful of the cycle for Senate Democratic candidates.

On Monday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee posted its strongest quarter of the election cycle, raising $20.9 million with $46.2 million on hand -- nearly double the $24.6 million available to the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. "With just over 100 days to go until Election Day," wrote DSCC chairman Charles Schumer, "we are exactly where we need to be to run strong winning campaigns and expand our majority."

It's not just the congressional committees. Democratic candidates themselves appear financially well-positioned heading into the fall. From April through June, Minnesota candidate Al Franken raised $2.26 million compared to Sen. Norm Coleman's $2.35 million. Former Mississippi Governor Ronnie Musgrove raised $814,000 to conservative interim Senator Roger Wicker's $822,000. In North Carolina, Democratic nominee Kay Hagan has $1.54 million to Elizabeth Dole's $1.69 million. And in Maine, Democratic Congressman Tom Allen has $1 million to incumbent Susan Collins $1.06 million. The big leads are evident too. In Virginia, Warner has $3 million and Gilmore has less than $500,000. In Oregon, Merkley has $1.42 million and Smith has $1.35 million. In New Mexico, Tom Udall has $2.1 million and Pearce has $1.2 million. In Kentucky, Lunsford has $3.1 million and McConnell has $2.95 million. In Colorado, Mark Udall has $2.04 million to Schaffer's $1.4 million. In Alaska Begich has $1 million to Stevens' $745,000.

The conservative Washington Times felt compelled to publish a dreary editorial bemoaning the state of the congressional Republicans, while even sober analysts are predicting a shift of between five to seven seats into Democratic hands.

"Things are rolling for the Democrats," said Jennifer Duffy of the Cook Political Report. "I don't laugh anymore at eight or nine. A few races have to fall into play but they are close. They have Virginia gone, New Mexico is also gone, and six races are toss ups, including Minnesota, which [despite recent good news for Coleman] will still be a close race."

Indeed, it may no longer be so much of a pipe dream for the Democrats to gain the much-vaunted 60 vote majority needed to bypass GOP filibustering on the Senate floor. It is a long shot, of course, entailing many unforeseen circumstances, including the caucus keeping Sen. Joseph Lieberman among its ranks. And yet, the wheels are clearly rolling.

Take two examples: Alaska and Mississippi, states that have long been hostile turf to Democrats. One year ago, Alaska Republican Ted Stevens was a popular, pork barrel providing, firebrand conservative whose occupancy of his seat had made him a Senate institution. An ongoing FBI investigation into his suspicious relationship with Bill Allen, the founder of an Alaska-based oil services company, however, has spurned criticism of lax ethics and possible corruption.

The FBI detailed last year that Allen provided more than $400,000 in payments to public officials from the state in exchange for propitious energy legislation. It is unclear whether or not Stevens directly received any money in this exchange, but Allen's employees were paid to make major renovations to the Senator' house in 2000. The scandal has brought a discomforting element to the state's traditionally united GOP. Republican Governor Sarah Palin has distanced herself from Stevens, as have a number of key national figures, including John McCain (though the two have a history of butting heads - primarily over earmarks). As a result, Stevens now finds himself in danger of being booted from office by Democratic Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, who has tied or surpassed Stevens in several recent polls.

If Alaska is a Red State that Democrats are hoping to turn blue, Mississippi is deep crimson. When former Senator Trent Lott resigned in 2007 to become a lobbyist, his seat was temporarily appointed to former Rep. Roger Wicker. A special election will take place this fall to permanently fill Lott's seat for the remainder of his six-year term and signs suggest that Wicker, despite being in office for some months, could easily lose his post.

His opponent, Ronnie Musgrove, former Democratic Governor of the state, gained popularity by helping to ensure that Mississippi became the first state to have an internet-accessible computer in every classroom, and brought in over $14 billion in new investments to the state. He is also one of the more moderate Democrats running for Senate, having earned a reputation as a staunch fiscal conservative.

Another advantage may be name recognition. Mississippi's Senate race is a special election, meaning that neither candidate's party will be included on the ballot. Since voting along party lines is not an option, voters are left to chose based on surnames only. Musgrove served as Lieutenant Governor for four years, then as Governor for another four, positions that provided statewide recognition. Wicker has been in the Senate for less than a year and before that served in the House of Representatives.

Even if the Democrats win seats in both Alaska and Mississippi, the chances of achieving 60-vote majority remains slim. Nevertheless experts and even Republicans themselves are of the conviction that the GOP brand is toxic. As the Politico reported on Tuesday, "Republican Senate leaders -- terrified by the prospect of losing five or more seats in November -- have freed their members to vote however they need to vote to get reelected, even if that means bucking the president or the party's leadership."

Nathan Gonzales, political editor of the Rothenberg Political Report, told the Huffington Post: "the decline of the Republican brand rests heavily on President Bush. He is one of the biggest unanswered questions of the election cycle, whether or not John McCain can successfully distance himself from President Bush is still a question." Bottom line, according to Gonzales, "Democrats will gain seats, we just don't know how many."

This article touting a possible "60 Seat Majority", as much as I would like to see it, is baloney to the extent the count - as the article notes - "entail[s] many unforeseen circumstances, including the caucus keeping Sen. Joseph Lieberman among its ranks".

The Democrats danced with the devil to obtain procedural control of the Senate - Majority Leader and control of committee chairmanships. If they got the "wish list" election result of getting 59 Democratic seats - caucusing with Lieberman gives no advantage. He's going to side with the Republicans on the issues that matter for "Change" and where they are going to want to filibuster.

There are likely far too many "backroom" connections and dealings among the various Senators to truly know what deals will be cut with Lieberman, but as long as the Democrats end up with 55 seats or more wouldn't a Political Pillorying of Lieberman be worth far more than some pipe dream of including him in a bare 60 seat majority required to cut off the anticipated Republican Faux Filibustering (I call them that as the Dems don't actually make them ever do it).

Please Lord, let us have a clean sweep this November then the onus is on the Democratic Party do what in modern history has shown to be our strength...pulling the country out of the abyss and into the next phase of prosperity and better living. We need so much that it will take the hard work and dedication of Congress and the executive branch to overcome 8 years of incompetence and willful destruction to bring this country to some semblance of living up to our propaganda as a freedom loving law abiding nation.

Vote Democratic in November!

No kidding! The Repubs haven't done a thing to help this country, have kowtowed to the President and Cheney, even when they knew better.

There isn't enough of a majority of Dem's to pull off an impeachment, yet.

I agree; the poor ultrarich just don't have enough of our hard earned money yet. We need to get off the billionaires' backs first and foremost. The U.S. is not completely a third-world economy yet. Danged socialists.

If only I weren't afraid that the Democrats will somehow find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I'm sure the Republicans are counting on some stunning exhibition of Democratic idiocy to save them from the electoral ass-kicking they so richly deserve.

" the Republicans are counting on some stunning exhibition of Democratic idiocy"

Watch this space!

"The number of people who said they considered increasing energy supplies more important than protecting the environment increased from 54 percent in February to 60 percent and the number of people who favor oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge also increased."

http://www.newsmax.com/us/anwr_oil_drilling/2008/07/03/109678.html

" For now, gas prices are hovering around the $4/gallon mark, but what's in store for the rest of 2008? A national survey has found that "a sizable number" of Americans think that the end of summer (Labor Day) will bring $5/gallon gasoline."

http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/06/25/a-sizable-number-of-americans-think-gas-will-hit-5-gallon-by/

Fortunately, no Democrat is going to take this warning seriously. Trust me. Your refusal to drill will be your downfall.

Republicans think they have a winning issue here, and they definitely have made some headway with more Americans willing to drill (off-shore and otherwise). However, even in this new Gallup poll a majority of Americans (52% to 43%) still oppose drilling in ANWR.

And once people realize that the oil companies have no intention on actually drilling anytime soon (they just want to lock up the supply), they may be more cautious. The oil companies already have oil/gas drilling leases on 68 million acres of public lands they aren't using. Another issue is the lack of refining capacity. Oil companies don't want to invest in new refineries (they cost a lot to build, and they'd rather keep prices high), and they've actually tried to shut some of them down. In other words, there will be no reduction in the price at the pump for years at best, and maybe never.

The news of a large oil spill in New Orleans in the Mississippi River following the collision of a barge and tanker a few days ago won't help either. The river is still closed to traffic as an expensive cleanup is attempted, which is costing the NO $100,000 a day in lost port fees.

The Democrats may be excited about their expanding majority.
It has come at the expense of the American people. If they had a shred of integrity, they would have removed Nancy Pelosi as Speaker by now.

For the life of me, I don't understand all of this anti Pelosi rhetoric. She doesn't have enough votes to override a veto. She doesn't have enough votes to prevent a fiibuster. That means nothing is going to happen without the cooperation of at least some republicans. She didn't choose to have to cooperate. The american people simply haven't given her the votes to force the democratic agenda.

She isn't a wizard. She can't just wave a magic wand and bring the troops home or insist the president be impeached. She needs a solid 2/3's majority to make the republicans irrelevant. She doesn't have it and isn't wasting time pretending she does. She is doing what any good leader does: moving ahead with the elements of the agenda that are passable and biding her time until she has the power to make more sweeping changes.

Anything more would simply be ineffective partisan grandstanding. And I think we can all agree we've had our fill of that from the republicans.

The House does not have unlimited debate and therefore does not have a filibuster. She controls the House calender and therefore can refuse to bring up any bill she chooses. Example, she could refuse to bring up a war financing bill and thereby end Bush's ability to continue the war. Or the Fisa bill.

People want her to make this a priority, make it happen in the House Judiciary Committee. Not to make it happen is bad enough, but to stop any chance, with a shockingly criminal administration still to answer for their many crimes - appalling. If you can't impeach Bush and Company, what is this law for again?

She has the majority to send it to the Senate. That would be enough. For Congress to offer it's sternest rebuke of offenses committed by this President, whether it sticks doesn't matter it's the statement. Pelosi and other powerful people who claim to know better in government are quick to dismiss the idea of repercussions for the criminals, short of what the people can do: (see the various comments about accountability being meted out in the voting booth in response to questions about how the administration will be punished)

I'm frightened the precedent of taking no action against crimes done by the Bush Administration will mean. I only conclude those very things look appealing to a lot of Democrats, thinking that once they're in power, it will be used "for good." These people love power. They've devoted their lives to becoming powerful people. I think to many politicians, the expansion of the discretion and privileges the Bush Administration gave itself and cronies is something that they themselves want to wield. I can think of no other reason for the lack of action being taken to condemn and renounce the Bush regime's tactics.

Well said - I think NP gets WAY too much flack for having her hands tied on MANY things (including impeachment) She knows what she's doing - she's been playing the boys game for a while (and she's much better at it than Hillary - who I think is actually doing quite well after some much needed rest.)

I live in western WI so we see Twin Cities news stations. Franken is behind in the polls, but just to show you how desperate Coleman is - his ads now talk about how "he brought hockey back". Ice hockey, is of course a big time draw in MN, and indeed, when Coleman was mayor of St. Paul a new hockey franchise started after the MN Northstars left the state. But really - talking about what you did as mayor years ago - and not talking about what you've done in the Senate? His ads don't even mention the word "Republican" - ever - not in one single ad the entire season.

Since the Democrats don't vote as a solid bloc on anything controversial, 60 Democrats in the Senate isn't going to mean much. Far more important would be some growth in solidarity among Democratic Senators. Icing on the cake would be some Republicans sniffing the breeze and deciding to break with their own party occasionally.

Check out what was passed in the House and Senate in the last two weeks. Actually, since Mitch McConnell told his repubs to "save themselves". The Dems are a solid block and the repubs are already assisting them in getting at least two bills passed that Dubya said he would veto!

It's sometimes easier to do a little research than to put yourself through the stress of disbelief!

Right. It is s a sign of Dem intelligence that Dems don't vote as a bloc. Amazing how Bush/Cheney/Rove were able to get Reps in Congress to vote party line. Buncha robots. We're not like that, and the downside is Dems tend to think for themselves (gasp!)
