Torn between wines from Napa and Bordeaux? Well, if Dr. Tyler Colman had his way, you wouldn't be selecting your alcohol solely based on your palette anymore. Instead, he'd have you refer to the "Green Line," or the Mason Dixon Line for Wine, wine's national carbon footprint line that runs through Ohio all the way down to Texas.

Colman, a PhD and professor at New York University, and wine blogger Dr. Vino, examined the carbon footprint of wine and found what they refer to as a "green" line. For all states West of the line, it's more carbon efficient to consume wine trucked from California. For all states East of the line, it is more efficient to consumer wine bottled from France. Though Bordeaux comes from a different continent, efficiencies in container shipping and shorter truck routes make it more efficient than trucking wine from Napa across the United States.

Bummer. I much prefer Cali and Oregonian wine to European. Though Ohio has some decent wineries and so does NY State, it tends to be mostly german-style whites which are a bit sweet for my palate. The reds tend not to be much to speak of unless you're into rose`.

We practice green living in every area: transportation, vegetable gardening, vegetarian lifestyle, recycling, energy effiency of our home, shopping locally as much as possible....western US wine is one vice I'm going to keep, at least till it gets too expensive.

California and France are far from being the only sources of wine available to consumers.

Palate. Your taste sensors and judgement are your palate. A Palette is a painters variety of colors.

I'm outside of Chicago, why would it be better for me to buy wine in California than points back East? My family lives in NY state and its wine country is a lot closer to me than California.

Yikes! I draw the line at drawing the line regarding wine regions from which I may consume. I'll give up something else. But I reserve the right to purchase and consume wine from any region.
