I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Mccain

***UPDATED BELOW***

Earlier this week, when John McCain said "it seems to me that Senator Obama would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign," Time's Joe Klein called the political hit "as intemperate a personal attack as I've ever heard a major-party candidate make in a presidential campaign."

In response, Obama himself told NBC's Brian Williams:

Yeah, I-- I was disappointed by that language. You know, John McCain and I disagree on policy. You know, we disagreed on going into the war in Iraq. We disagreed, until recently, about the need to get more troops into Afghanistan. But I've never questioned-- that he wants to make America safer. And for him to suggest that I don't-- for him to suggest that somehow -- I'm less concerned about the safety of my wife and daughter-- than he is I think -- was -- was unfortunate.

So is McCain now backing away from directly impugning Obama's desire to keep America safe? Judging from prepared remarks emailed to reporters ahead of the Arizona Republican's speech to the American GI forum Friday afternoon, it would appear so. The closest his speech comes to that previous line of attack is when it declares: "He [Obama] would choose to lose in Iraq in hopes of winning in Afghanistan. But had his position been adopted, we would have lost both wars."

Of course it's unlikely that Obama would see his preference to re-focus on Afghanistan as choosing to "lose" in Iraq. But at least McCain is now framing Obama's position as a balance of priorities as opposed to an out and out desire to fail the country as a way to reap some political benefit. So while McCain is still prepared to go after Obama's symbolic vote to cut off troop funding and his stated opposition to the surge, it appears he may have realized that a frontal assault on Obama's wish for America to succeed is counter-productive.

2:05 PM UPDATE: Perhaps we spoke too soon. CNN reports that John McCain defended his previous attack on Obama during an interview with Wolf Blitzer that will air later this afternoon.

"I am accusing, I am stating the facts. The facts are that I don't question Sen. Obama's patriotism. I'm sure that he's a very patriotic American," he said in an interview from Denver, Colorado, where is making a speech and will later meet with the Dalai Lama.

"I question his judgment because he lacks experience and knowledge, and I questioned his judgment. ... Sen. Obama just views this war as another political issue, which he can change positions," McCain said.

Stay tuned.

The difference between Mccain and Obama is clear, Mccain would continue to bankrupt a already bankrupt american economy, just to prove that "qoute" I KNOW HOW TO WIN WARS!! " but the one war that he fought in he was captured, and stayed in a prison camp for 5 years, so i'd like to know just exactly what war did "MCCAIN" win was it world 1, 2, or the one the he's planning if he becomes president WORLD WAR 3!! he will destroy the american economy just to prove that he's the real thing, A REAL WAR MONGER!!!

The FACT is, the OLD MAN forgets what he says as soon as he says it, it confuses his facts (when he has any), and the rest of the time he offers nothing for me to get excited about, and one thing to make me worry. Why should I vote for a man who will be 72 years OLD when inagurated, and he has significant health problems anyway.

I will not waste my vote.

Seems all McSame can do is criticize and attack Obama. He has nothing constructive to offer.

Poor Barack Obama. Because of deadly racism and because he is black he is burdened with PERFECTION. if he made half the mistakes and misquotes that John McCan makes, he would be crucified.

And McCain has to toe the Republican, Neocon, Bush, Rove line, or else Steve Schmidt will waterboard him or something. Maybe that's why he has been foaming at the mouth attacking Barack .

So much for the straight talk express!.

Exactly right! I have grown so frustrated by media's repeated willingness to give this guy a forum to do nothing but spew venom against his opponent. When are they going to hold his feet to the flame and ask for policy proposals? (Of course, he has none, so that would be interesting.)

I also keep waiting to see this stuff show up in the polls. It seems the electorate is not in the mood for this usual Republican crap this year, yet he's hanging in there. What's up with that?!

Standard Repo logic: There is nothing at all wrong with destroying
a country in order to save it, or to extract whatever oil they've got.
But the oil comes first. (What is the first & only Iraqi ministry
occupied by US forces when they conquered Iraq? The OIL
ministry.)

What is your plan for losing Iraq, when
we are yet again almost this close to
achieving Glorious Victory at last?

Shouldn't take more than another $750 billion, for sure.

Oh, and have you stopped beating your wife?

I wrote a note to an earlier post to the CNN presentation on what it means to be black in america. I said that if it does not reflect what Sen. Obama is going through it is not worth watching. The person above or in an earlier post was much more eloquent and to the point. I spent 30 years in a white color job developing game changing technology to move that specific industry forward and got little to nothing (no promotion, no reward) for the effort.
People talk about affirmative action and the like and I as a black man benefited in that I got an education and then work my butt off to get a job and work the job for 31 years trying to prove my worth to society. I say that to say it is not the process that is bad it is some people who make the process bad. More precisely they have found ways to game the system to give them help when not needed and or just want a hand out..
During my 31 years I was treated daily with slights seen and unseen much like Sen Obama. I again say thank God we have the ability to share knowledge, information and hopefully wisdom is a real time mode.

Hopefully, we can get this man in the Oval Office and he will turn the ship toward a better tomorrow.

I hope that very soon, there will be no more "slights" or any other form of racism and I believe Senator Obama can help us all achieve this wonderful goal. I am a 52 year old white man and I have never been this excited about a presidential candidate in my life.

"People talk about affirmative action and the like and I as a black man benefited in that I got an education and then work my butt off to get a job and work the job for 31 years trying to prove my worth to society."

Whites, and Blacks, need to get off this "so and so benefited from affirmative-action." What makes you think that your success wasn't from you "working your butt off"?

I get tired of people not giving THEMSELVES the credit instead of insisting that the government must be right and that their own work made no difference in their success.

PLEASE, give yourself some love!

Today on a Cnn interview Mccain was asked if he was president and PM Maliki was still the PM and insisted on the troops leaving would he agree with him. Mccain first accused Maliki of saying he wanted a troop withdrawl to win the election in Iraq, Yet another attack from Mccain stating everybody is willing to lose a war to win an election. This was the same attack he accused Obama . Mccain went on to say that Maliki wanted a 16 month withdrawl according to conditions on the ground inwhich Maliki didn't say was was conditional. Then he said he knows PM Maliki very well and said he wouldn't withdrawl the troops. Wolf Splitzer asked why not and Mccain said he wont. I think Mccain is being very arrogant and he is guilty of the same attackes he accusing Obama of the surge. Mccain has not acknowledge that President Bush and Maliki has agreed to a timetable for withdrawl and PM Malikits latest statements of wanting the troops out in 2010. Mccain also without hesitation said he would move the capital of Isreal to Jeruselum as soon as he became president. You guys really need to see this interview with Mccain and Wolf Blitzer Mccain has made allot of controversial statements..

I saw this interview too. It was unbelievable. The flat out arrogance and ignorance shown by McCain. He basically accused Maliki of lying to pander to the Iraqi voters. His only support for this was to continually repeat that he "knows" Malliki - as if they have some special relationsip with Maliki which Obama nor the rest of the world has. McCain is truly losing his bearings at this point - yet the polls show him closing gaps in battleground states and nationally. Either the polls are flat out false or the American people are flat out stupid.

But, there a lot of people nodding their heads when he says this stuff--even if it is total BS, they want to believe anything bad about BO--he is appealing to their emotional hunger for ANY reason to be against O; some because he is black, others because he has confidence and composure.

The John McCain of 2000 is dead. What has taken his place is a man with no scruples,no morals and no abllity to lead this country other than off the cliff.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:03 PM on 07/25/2008

I agree. The lack of morality you refer to is endemic to the current repub party. They could care less about American people. It is money and power that matters. Truth and honor be damned. Please stand up America. Our Republic is at stake.

During the 1950's there was another Republican senator who sought to advance his political career by besmirching the patriotism of others. His name was Joseph McCarthy. Among the people he determined to be "unAmerican" were President Harry S. Truman, General George C. Marshall, Secretay of State Dean Acheson and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In one of the most memorable moments of American journalistic history, McCarthy was smacked down by Edward R. Murrow. Unfortunately today we have the likes of Katie Couric. Now that the Republicans in general and Senator McCain in particular have revealed the type of campaign they will run, they shall henceforth be known as the MCCARTHYCANS and SENATOR MCCARTHYCAIN.

"The mind of a bigot is like the pupil of an eye: the more light you pour on it, the more it contracts."
Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, U.S. Supreme Court
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."
-- Theodore Roosevelt, 1911
