PARIS — Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, nearing the end of a fast-paced international campaign trip, warned Iran on Friday, "don't wait for the next president" to take office before yielding to Western demands to dismantle its nuclear weapons program.

"The pressure, I think, is only going to build," he said at a news conference as he stood beside French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Obama spent less than five hours in the French capital, time enough for his motorcade to drive past curious Parisians gathered along the sidewalks hoping to catch a glimpse, receive a greeting from his host on the steps of the presidential palace and then hold private talks before a news conference.

The French president veered close to an endorsement to a man he called "my dear Barack Obama."

Sarkozy recalled that when they first met in 2006 neither was president.

"And one of us became president. Well, let the other do likewise, huh? I mean, that's not meddling" in the U.S. election, Sarkozy said.

For his part, Obama observed that when Sarkozy visited the United States two years ago, he met with only two senators _ himself and John McCain, now the Republican presidential candidate-in-waiting. "So I would suggest that, for the reporters in the room, if you want to know something about elections, you should talk to the president of France."

Obama said he and Sarkozy agreed that Iran poses "an extraordinarily grave situation," and the world must send "a clear message to Iran to end its illicit nuclear program."

Obama has spoken frequently of Iran on his trip, stressing that its nuclear ambitions pose a threat to Israel's existence and threatens to destabilize the entire region. While the United States and other Western nations accuse Iran of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, Tehran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

Obama disclosed that earlier in his trip, he had found Israelis curious about a possible shift in Syria's foreign policy, "that if, in fact, Syrian President Bashar Assad was serious about dealing with their support of Hamas or their support of Hezbollah, that that could be a game-changer."

Obama said, "I think that's an area worth exploring and having leaders like President Sarkozy help _ helping to move that along, I think has enormous potential."

Israel has been in indirect discussions with Syria in recent weeks, though little is known of their content.

Obama told reporters that "Afghanistan is a war we have to win." The Taliban and terrorist groups it supports, he said, pose an unacceptable threat to the U.S., France and other nations.

"We've got to finish the job," said Obama, who often has said the Iraq war was an unwise move that distracted the United States from efforts to find Osama bin Laden and other terrorist leaders and to root out the Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

Sarkozy said he agreed that the Taliban must be defeated in Afghanistan, where French troops are part of a multinational force.

Obama is on an election-season trip, financed by his campaign, that ends on Saturday with talks with British officials. Part of his goal for the trip through the Mideast and Europe has been to allow him to make his debut on an international stage in the hopes of reassuring skeptical voters in the United States about his readiness for the presidency.

His mere presence at a joint news conference with Sarkozy provided images, at least, to achieve his goal. And while the senator reminded his audience there is only one president, he also spoke as though he was representing the country he hopes to lead.

"I obviously am very appreciative of President Sarkozy's long-standing commitment to strengthen the bilateral relationship between France and the United States and enhance trans-Atlantic relations as a whole," Obama said.

"He has been a great leader on this, and the American people greatly appreciate President Sarkozy's approach to the relationship between our two countries," he said.

Sarkozy and Obama met for more than hour, including 20 minutes of one-on-one talks, according to an aide to the French president. Upon arriving at the Elysee Palace, Obama greeted a crowd of reporters with a simple, "Bonjour!"

On the news today....Americans living in Paris ( who vote in our elections) are starting campaigns to
vote for Obama....

Maybe this is the reason he is visiting and smiling in Berlin...Paris...and London...

Deja vu, mon ami!

Didn't Kerry get huge praise and practical endorsments from the leaders of Europe, especially France?

That worked out well for him ...

Remember Tripoli? Reagan lit Kadifi up quick, fast and in a hurry! They said REAGAN was an actor and lacked EXPERIENCE...remember? Obama told the world last winter he would go up into Pakistan mountains with or without Musharifs permission...by any means necessary! It was touted by the naysayers that Obama was showing his inexperience with this tactic. Republicans would have you believe one minute it useless to "talk" to our would-be enemies THEN THE NEXT ENGAGE THEM IN TALKS! HMMM! Condi Rice says talks with Iran isn't working! Yes it is...because we are now on record for first TRYING to use diplomacy before aggression! (Whatever happened to Cowboy diplomacy?)

So, why is it as of late Obama's suggestion of movement of more troops to Afghanistan (and its being done as we speak), and talks to Iran going on AS WE SPEAK , taken so seriously? All the better for Obama that this is happening now. So when he takes office failed policy of the past is no more...and he can commence with a CAN OF WHOOPA** to those who wouldn't listen! IRAN NEEDS TO ACCEPT EU NUKE PROPOSAL OFFER OR ELSE!

I see deaf people, I hear blind souls, and I read troubled mind.
It''s an emotional jungle up here right now. War of words in a nano-metric world. It's tiny, very insignificant, but loud enough to be worrisome.
There is actually enough toxic written materials in here to start a macro war of opinions and ferocious certainties. Left alone, this could grow exponentially with radioactive hate, bitterness and animosity.
Some of you guys are seriously ready for Iraq and Afghanistan. We need real substances and ideas to help the country, not the same #$#$@$.
I wish I had a dream for you all. But all I got is love and respect. Try it, at the end of the day it feels good, lighter, hungry typing fighters....

So the French President and Obama agree that:

1. Iran poses "an extraordinarily grave situation," and the world must send "a clear message to Iran to end its illicit nuclear program.
2. "Afghanistan is a war we have to win." The Taliban and terrorist groups it supports... pose an unacceptable threat to the U.S., France and other nations.

Quite frankly these men speak in riddles and vague, undifined goals. Seems messages are what is important. Perception is not always reality because perception is often based on lies.

Obama is starting to sound like Bush.
Does anyone agree?

HasBarackObamaApologized yet for snubbing half the population of the planet in his Berlin speech?

He went down the laundry list of abuses and prejudices and discriminations. And yet, he tellingly left out gender discrimination.

Was it because he himself benefited from gender discrimination in the primaries? Was it because he was afraid of offending the sensibilities of those around the world that feel it is their right and their obligation to oppress women? Was it because he just forgot that gender discrimination exists in the world?

What's his excuse?

And since he's out there proclaiming his utopian vision, why didn't he go a step further and argue against homophobia and transgender discimination? Why not attempt to raise world consciousness on these issues? These are issues he claims to support, but he neglected to mention any of them yesterday.

I still remember HowMittRomneysLandmark speech on religion in America was relentlessly attacked by the media for "excluding" agnostics.

He has since apologized and now every time that speech is mentioned, he goes out of his way to say that he should have included more about the way agnostics contribute to this country and culture.

That's class. Snubbing 3 billion women and then stubbornly refusing to acknowledge it? Not class.

oh good lord. perhaps if hillary had even bothered to mention women's rights once between california and ohio, she would have been the candidate - but she did not. she threw women under the bus as soon as the california primary was over and she wanted the red state/cross over vote.

i was glad to see her back this week - talking about real women's issues. it's a shame she decided to run as mark penn instead of hillary clinton and i look forward to seeing what great things she will do with her life - if she finds the courage and the backbone to start following her own beliefs - instead of her squalid husband's and odious advisor's.

The envy from McCain and his supporters is a beauty to behold. McCain can't even fill a small town hall for one of his gaffe-filled rants. On the other hand, Obama gets 75,000 people to show up in Portland and 200,000+ people to show up in Berlin. Berliin folks! Ha. All McCain and his supporters can do is whine. Whine. Whine. No wonder Phil Gramm called America a nation of whiners. He's been around McCain and other whining Republicans way too much.

0bama will be president and you will still be crying affirmative action.

To get into Harvard Law you need at at least a 170 LSAT the highest standard in the country.

http://www.ilrg.com/rankings/law/index.php/1/desc/LSATHigh/2007

While McBush was 894 out of 899 in his Naval Academy class but still got into flight school because his father was an Admiral.

McBush is the affirmative action candidate who would not even be in congress if he did not get the help of his father.

BIG LIB: how, exactly, do you think mccain got into that fancy military academy? the one with that only takes the best and the brightest? or how do you think george bush got into yale? it wasn't their hard work - they were both known as partiers who rarely studied. it wasn't their grades. they were near the bottom of their classes.

can you spell l-e-g-a-c-y? It means "Who's Your Daddy? about a quarter of the admissions slots in ivy schools and leading military academies are reserved for rich kids whose parents are alumni. i find that way, way more offensive than affirmative action. and unfortunately, it also applies to a whole bunch of the american press corps under 50. which explains alot.

Gallup Daily: O bama by 6, Is There a Europe Effect?
O bama moves back to significant lead over Mc Cain

http://www.gallup.com/poll/109105/Gallup-Daily-Obama-There-Europe-Effect.aspx

I like the fist scenario they state.

"1. O bama's trip could end up being the basis for a shift in voter preferences to the point where he pulls into a sustained lead over Mc Cain. This could occur on a delayed basis. It's even possible that O bama's trip, while not having an immediate effect on tracking numbers, could lay the mental groundwork in the minds of voters to the point where they are more open to an O bama presidency at some point in the future (such as the Democratic convention). In particular, this might occur if his trip removes doubts voters might have about his ability to handle international affairs."
