New Trip Top

John McCain is welcoming Barack Obama back to America with a hard right cross.

The message of the Republican's new attack ad that debuted Saturday both perfects and makes more harsh a theme that his campaign has been developing for weeks: specifically, that the Illinois Democrat does not care about American troops. Drawing from Obama's one tactical misstep during his week-long trip abroad -- a canceled visit with wounded troops in Germany, the cause of which was a debate with the Pentagon over political propriety -- the McCain campaign nevertheless believes they have a useful new plot point at their disposal.

When viewed alongside the 900 days that elapsed between visits to Iraq, and his symbolic vote against one round of funding for the war, the McCain camp now hopes the canceled visit in Germany provides a three-act structure to their dramatic imagining of a conflict between Obama and the troops.

Of course, in one particular aspect, McCain's playwrights have resorted to wholesale fiction in order to craft their narrative. However complicated the issue of Obama's canceled troop visit has become, no one -- not the campaign, and not the Pentagon -- has cited a prohibition on "bring[ing] cameras" along with Obama as a reason for the trip's scuttling.

In another distortion that could be viewed as funny were it no so manipulative, McCain's video editor selected footage of Obama sinking a three-point shot to represent time spent at the gym instead of with troops. Of course, that footage was taken in Kuwait, not Germany, at an event for ... troops.

"John McCain is an honorable man who is running an increasingly dishonorable campaign," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor in an email to reporters Saturday evening, adding: "Senator McCain knows full well that Senator Obama strongly supports and honors our troops, which is what makes this attack so disingenuous. Senator Obama was honored to meet with our men and women in uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan this week and has visited wounded soldiers at Walter Reed numerous times. This politicization of our soldiers is exactly what Senator Obama sought to avoid, and it's not worthy of Senator McCain or the 'civil' campaign he claimed he would run."

The Obama campaign also sent along an excerpt from the Congressional Record meant to embarrass McCain for his present tactics. In a floor speech from May 2007, the Arizona Republican said:

"How can we possibly find honor in using the fate of our servicemen to score political advantage in Washington? There is no pride to be had in such efforts. We are at war, a hard and challenging war, and we do no service for the best of us-those who fight and risk all on our behalf-by playing politics with their service."

In June, McCain apologized for using the image of Gen. David Petraeus in a political mailer, saying that politicization of the military would "not happen again" in his campaign.

Still, it appears that there's something of a pattern to the recent ads coming out of McCain's campaign. Compare the latest to another from last week, entitled "Troop Funding":

Is it a coincidence that such consistency of message on a blunt force topic like support for troops comes in the first month after Karl Rove protégé Steve Schmidt took over the day-to-day reins of McCain's campaign? If so, look for much more of this between now and November.

Script For "Troops" (TV :30)

Anncr: Barack Obama never held a single Senate hearing on Afghanistan.

He hadn't been to Iraq in years.

He voted against funding our troops.

And now, he made time to go to the gym, but cancelled a visit with wounded troops.

Seems the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras.

John McCain is always there for our troops.

McCain. Country first.

John McCain: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

UPDATE: Rhode Island Democrat Sen. Jack Reed responds to McCain's ad:

I was with Senator Obama last week as we met privately with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Senator Obama listened to their concerns and expressed his gratitude for their service without press or fanfare. He cares for our troops deeply and has worked hard to give them not only the resources they need, but also honor their service with a clearly defined mission and by providing them with the support they have earned when they come home. And just as Senator McCain's support of President Bush's veto of funding for our troops doesn't mean he does not support them, neither does Senator Obama's insistence that we not give George Bush a blank check.

Today, Command Sergeant Major Craig Layton, USA (Ret.) — who served as the Command Sergeant Major at Landstuhl — issued the following statement on Barack Obama’s canceled visit to Ramstein and Landstuhl:
“Having spent two years as the Command Sergeant Major at Landstuhl Hospital, I am always grateful for the attention that facility receives from members of Congress. There is no more important work done by the United States Army than to care for those who have been wounded in the service our country. While Americans troops remain engaged in two hot wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is a steady stream of casualties to the hospital, and a steady stream of visitors who wish to meet with those troops and thank them for their service.
“Senator Obama has explained his decision to cancel a scheduled visit there by blaming the military, which would not allow one of his political advisers to join him in a tour of the facility. Why Senator Obama felt he needed an adviser with him to visit U.S. troops is unclear, but if Senator Obama isn’t comfortable meeting wounded American troops without his entourage, perhaps he does not have the experience necessary to serve as commander in chief.”

Here we go again... Republicans seem to know only "lies, lies and damned lies!" Hasn't anyone told them how sick we all are of this type of campaigning! Oh, wait...let's ALL tell them in November!

Wasn't it McCain who said he'd stay in this war for 100 years? That's what I'd call hating the troops, Keep sending them into that hellhole Iraq for another 100 years.

This is so ridiculous how people are STILL insisting that McCain meant that the Iraq war as it is today will be that way for 100 more years and that during the entire 100 years the fight to win this war will be raging on. It makes one look pretty darn silly when they keep repeating this and taking it to mean 100 more years of FIGHTING the Iraq War as it is today. Yes we will from henceforth on have our Military men and women stationed in Iraq but not on the day to day mission which they are on now - for goodness sake. There are a lot of foreign countries where our Military men and woman are stationed that us back home here would consider HELLHOLES - so lets just remember about those men and women too who are also risking their lives on a daily basis.

Lets see now - so if McCain wins the presidency in 08 that means then that the United States will never again for 100 years have another general election and when McCain passes on, then the baton automatically passes on to another Republican -- perhaps maybe even the Bush Twins can each have a go at being President, then their offspring, and so on and so on --- makes logical sense to me! I would try to figure out what # term that would make it for the "George W. Bush Presidency" but quite frankly it isn't even worth the

They don't believe that, they're just jerking your chain. McC was obviously referring to S.Korea or Germany style bases. Still, I think the American people don't want that either.

100 years of an American military presence is not a great idea, either. Who said that the U.S. should be the police dept. for planet Earth?

Ole Johnny should listen up...the only hater in this campaign is him. He is a textbook definition of a HATER. He's inadequate, a gaffer,a flip flopper and a loser, a miserable little boy in an old man's body. He used his status as the son of generals to move ahead of other qualified people in the armed forces...he used a dizty doo drug addict to boost his career while leaving his crippled wife under the bus. He has reneged on practically every stance he's taken in order to be president.

The aura of desperation coming from McCain is so thick it practically fills every room he finds himself in.

This is simply beyond pathetic. Taking a shot of Obama sinking a 3 pointer IN FRONT OF THE TROOPS and then claiming that he "went to the gym" instead of visiting the troops which the Pentagon disallowed?

I really hope McCain goes down in flames come november..

I think that McKnife doesn't know that even if O was not in the Navy, he still knows how to swim in deep and "shark invested" waters. Let's see who makes it to the shore with their a## and dignity in tack. Their is life after running.

Perhaps Sen. McCain really believes the many lies, some quite evil, he sends our into the world about his opponent.

Or, perhaps he believes that winning a campaign is more important than ones character and honor.

On the other hand, consideringt his habitual "senior moments", maybe he thinks Sen. Obama is just the new Secretary of State.

He's a desperate old man, and he knows this is his last chance at the presidency. There's nothing he won't do or say to achieve that goal.

“I am John McCain and I Approve this message.”

There,, the smoking GUN.

Folks,, if you think it is all over, if you think we have seen the worst of thes attacks GUESS again!

Yes, throngs of people flock to hear every word Obama speaks, they COME, they LISTEN, they Cheer. But never, never think it is over, that on character and strength of will that Obama is going to slide into the Presidency.

For 8 years, we have seen these tactics win, time and time again.

FEAR WORKS!!!!

We still have the greatest single tool to see that this HORROR does not continue.

THE VOTE!

Register, talk with others, share with others, help support Obama in any way you can. Attend his speeches, learn about his life and family, test your beliefs in Obama EACH and every day.

KNOW the man and share your research, HOPE and desires for change with everyone you meet. Be patient and kind, this is NOT a time for rash words and endless controversy.

And VOTE!

Vote for a NEW America,, not one of hate and divisions.

FILTH and slander will not RULE America.

All the best

For somebody who claims to loveand support the troops then why he didn't vote for GI bill? why is he trying to cut the vets health benefits?

Actions speaks louder than words.

P.S. "Benjamins" refers to $100 bills (Benjamin Franklin's pic is on that bill). And maybe I should've said, "Grovers" instead of "Clevelands," in reference to the $1000 bills. My bad.
