I Like ItI Don’t Like It
New Trip Top

John McCain is welcoming Barack Obama back to America with a hard right cross.

The message of the Republican's new attack ad that debuted Saturday both perfects and makes more harsh a theme that his campaign has been developing for weeks: specifically, that the Illinois Democrat does not care about American troops. Drawing from Obama's one tactical misstep during his week-long trip abroad -- a canceled visit with wounded troops in Germany, the cause of which was a debate with the Pentagon over political propriety -- the McCain campaign nevertheless believes they have a useful new plot point at their disposal.

When viewed alongside the 900 days that elapsed between visits to Iraq, and his symbolic vote against one round of funding for the war, the McCain camp now hopes the canceled visit in Germany provides a three-act structure to their dramatic imagining of a conflict between Obama and the troops.

Of course, in one particular aspect, McCain's playwrights have resorted to wholesale fiction in order to craft their narrative. However complicated the issue of Obama's canceled troop visit has become, no one -- not the campaign, and not the Pentagon -- has cited a prohibition on "bring[ing] cameras" along with Obama as a reason for the trip's scuttling.

In another distortion that could be viewed as funny were it no so manipulative, McCain's video editor selected footage of Obama sinking a three-point shot to represent time spent at the gym instead of with troops. Of course, that footage was taken in Kuwait, not Germany, at an event for ... troops.

"John McCain is an honorable man who is running an increasingly dishonorable campaign," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor in an email to reporters Saturday evening, adding: "Senator McCain knows full well that Senator Obama strongly supports and honors our troops, which is what makes this attack so disingenuous. Senator Obama was honored to meet with our men and women in uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan this week and has visited wounded soldiers at Walter Reed numerous times. This politicization of our soldiers is exactly what Senator Obama sought to avoid, and it's not worthy of Senator McCain or the 'civil' campaign he claimed he would run."

The Obama campaign also sent along an excerpt from the Congressional Record meant to embarrass McCain for his present tactics. In a floor speech from May 2007, the Arizona Republican said:

"How can we possibly find honor in using the fate of our servicemen to score political advantage in Washington? There is no pride to be had in such efforts. We are at war, a hard and challenging war, and we do no service for the best of us-those who fight and risk all on our behalf-by playing politics with their service."

In June, McCain apologized for using the image of Gen. David Petraeus in a political mailer, saying that politicization of the military would "not happen again" in his campaign.

Still, it appears that there's something of a pattern to the recent ads coming out of McCain's campaign. Compare the latest to another from last week, entitled "Troop Funding":

Is it a coincidence that such consistency of message on a blunt force topic like support for troops comes in the first month after Karl Rove protégé Steve Schmidt took over the day-to-day reins of McCain's campaign? If so, look for much more of this between now and November.

Script For "Troops" (TV :30)

Anncr: Barack Obama never held a single Senate hearing on Afghanistan.

He hadn't been to Iraq in years.

He voted against funding our troops.

And now, he made time to go to the gym, but cancelled a visit with wounded troops.

Seems the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras.

John McCain is always there for our troops.

McCain. Country first.

John McCain: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

UPDATE: Rhode Island Democrat Sen. Jack Reed responds to McCain's ad:

I was with Senator Obama last week as we met privately with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Senator Obama listened to their concerns and expressed his gratitude for their service without press or fanfare. He cares for our troops deeply and has worked hard to give them not only the resources they need, but also honor their service with a clearly defined mission and by providing them with the support they have earned when they come home. And just as Senator McCain's support of President Bush's veto of funding for our troops doesn't mean he does not support them, neither does Senator Obama's insistence that we not give George Bush a blank check.

John McCain is an honorable man who is running an increasingly dishonorable campaign as stated in the article. McCain's continious negative campaigning against Obama will soon start to pay back dividends for him, just like it did for Hillary. Americans are concerned about the state of the nation, not the continious jibjabering about insignificant hobglobins that McCain creates for everything that Obama says and does when he is fully unware of the circumstances.

Why is everybody so shocked? The republican mascot is a wad of slime. As a Vietnam War COMBAT veteran I am embarrassed at the slant and tone of the McCain campaign. It's clear his handlers are running scared and there are no issues he can discuss with intelligence and confidence -- the result of following Bush to the edge of the cliff.

There's been a lot of talk these days about EXPERIENCE as the key definer of McCain's edge on Obama. But, if that were the criteria -- doesn't George Bush have 7+years of "experience" as POTUS / Commander in Chief? Yet, who in their right mind would want him for 4 more years? McCain certainly gave to his country -- 30-PLUS YEARS AGO -- but that doesn't qualify him for the job of POTUS. What has he done LATELY. By any test of service to country over the past 10 years, I'd say Barack Obama out-performs John McCain.

Thank you for your previous service to our country. I hope that you will continue to serve by organizing your fellow veterans to appear at political rallies as well as holding news conferences to support Obama. It is important that you be heard and to be visible to the voting public. It is my understanding that Obama has consistently supported veteran's issues while McCain has not. Voters need to be reminded of this on, at least, a weekly basis.

The nerve, the gall, the audacity of McCain is unbelievable! All he ever does is react to issues and statements made by the front runner. It's the same old politics of hate and mud slinging that the republican hate-machine knows so very well. Senator Obama should never, ever follow up on McCain's filth by retaliating with the same. In the end, Senator Obama will come out looking like a Knight in Shining Armor for the entire world to see. He's already there. It's almost over. Senator Obama will set an entirely new standard in American politics and be a beaming example for the world. It-will-happen! And the republican, democratic and Anglo Saxon hate machine can sit and brew in their own filth, disgust, rhetoric, and racism for the next four years! And if Senator Obama turns out to be better than he already is on matters of state, his haters might have to brew in it for another four years after that. I love it! God bless America! God bless the USA!

you'd think a few years in a dungeon would make a vet hesitate about using fellow soldiers as talking points. maybe he needs a few more years in a cellar (if he's even got a few more years left...)

Which is worse, not visiting wounded troops because of a misunderstanding with the pentagon or sending them to war and then voting to cut their benefits?

Elect John McCain

Travel

See the middle east up close and personal in a way you've never experienced before by traveling to such exotic places as Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and finally Pakistan. Along the way you'll enjoy air cover by the US air force and ground safety measures provided by US Marine and US Army personnel.

One way or another young americans will be traveling due to the reinstatement of draft. My guess is Canada will be the new fun spot of a new regenerated GWOT if Mr. McCain is elected.

Hold it, hold it: Am I to understand that it's McCain who is telling us that Obama is being horrible to US troops? Then, pray tell, which party is it that is always sending it's troops to fight these foreign wars; or does he mean it's ok to kill the troops, just send them all Chrissy presents as well?

Such faultless logic, 'Ah McC etc...."

Shame on McCain. Every day seems to bring me solace in my recent decision to abandon the Republican party. Not quite his contemporary I want to say "who is this old coot" who appears to articulate old and obsolete rhetoric full of venom. Renewal and republicanism as articulated in this campaign is nonsensical , just a means of keeping the failing system in place. America wake up, look outwards, consider other societal models that fare better than ours for the many versus the few. Surely most of us aspire to such change just as surely McCain & Co will maintain the status quo.

McCain's recent negative, inflamatory statements regarding a fellow candidate for this Nation's highest post, fills me with shame. That McCain is actiing like this and also representing one of our Nation's major politacal parties, bodes the tradegy in store for us if he should accidentally win. Personally, I believe in the commonsense of the American people and am confident that he won't succeed.

Alas, I'm afraid that relying on the "common sense of the American people" is what gave us 8 years of BuSh. It's bad enough that so many Americans were so wrong when they voted BuSh in and now we are a few poll-points away from doing it again! The lesson: Don't rely on American common sense. Get out the smart vote.

Sen. Jack Reed should be applauded for speaking out ,the only problem is ,McCain is now going to say "Where is the proof" that Obama did this " I still have not found any text or speechs where Obama states he argued with Gen.Petraus or that he overruled Petraus on anything ,I did find where Obama said IF he was commander in chief and felt that a decision by Petraus was wrong he WOULD overrrule that decision as commander chief. It's better to be a bit cautious and question a generals decision than to be lazy and agree with ANY generals decision just to get a problem out of the way.Back in 1958 ,When Senior Air Force officers proposed using 10-to-15-kiloton nuclear bombs against targets in Communist China in 1958, in the event that Beijing blockaded the Taiwan Strait, but President Dwight D. Eisenhower ruled out that option, even tho the top dogs disagreed with him.Things happen behind doors that we civilians don't know about about or are lied to about .

Hopefully Americans will relize what McCain is doing ,he is embarrassing this country even more with his childish, inmature temper tantrums and PUBLIC displays of jealously. But this type of action is common among sufferers of Alzheimer's Disease, they regress backwards to childish actions at times .He should be tested for the Disease before this campaign goes any further !

Even though most countries around the world are jealous of the hegemonic positioning of the U.S., they are happiest when we are stable and have the ability to create more peace. I know that the U.S. has carried out some terrible deeds overseas as well as at home, as we are not perfect, but the people of the world are sick and tired of the Bullying Bush agenda and the potiential that John McCain will carry out his politics even further. Nothing has shown that more clear than the soldier who saluted Obama when he went to visit them, and also the warm reception he received from the Europeans. Even though he is not the particular candidate I originally wanted to win, but between the two, he is definitely the one I will be voting for Lord willing.
