I Like ItI Don’t Like It
New Trip Top

John McCain is welcoming Barack Obama back to America with a hard right cross.

The message of the Republican's new attack ad that debuted Saturday both perfects and makes more harsh a theme that his campaign has been developing for weeks: specifically, that the Illinois Democrat does not care about American troops. Drawing from Obama's one tactical misstep during his week-long trip abroad -- a canceled visit with wounded troops in Germany, the cause of which was a debate with the Pentagon over political propriety -- the McCain campaign nevertheless believes they have a useful new plot point at their disposal.

When viewed alongside the 900 days that elapsed between visits to Iraq, and his symbolic vote against one round of funding for the war, the McCain camp now hopes the canceled visit in Germany provides a three-act structure to their dramatic imagining of a conflict between Obama and the troops.

Of course, in one particular aspect, McCain's playwrights have resorted to wholesale fiction in order to craft their narrative. However complicated the issue of Obama's canceled troop visit has become, no one -- not the campaign, and not the Pentagon -- has cited a prohibition on "bring[ing] cameras" along with Obama as a reason for the trip's scuttling.

In another distortion that could be viewed as funny were it no so manipulative, McCain's video editor selected footage of Obama sinking a three-point shot to represent time spent at the gym instead of with troops. Of course, that footage was taken in Kuwait, not Germany, at an event for ... troops.

"John McCain is an honorable man who is running an increasingly dishonorable campaign," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor in an email to reporters Saturday evening, adding: "Senator McCain knows full well that Senator Obama strongly supports and honors our troops, which is what makes this attack so disingenuous. Senator Obama was honored to meet with our men and women in uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan this week and has visited wounded soldiers at Walter Reed numerous times. This politicization of our soldiers is exactly what Senator Obama sought to avoid, and it's not worthy of Senator McCain or the 'civil' campaign he claimed he would run."

The Obama campaign also sent along an excerpt from the Congressional Record meant to embarrass McCain for his present tactics. In a floor speech from May 2007, the Arizona Republican said:

Story continues below

"How can we possibly find honor in using the fate of our servicemen to score political advantage in Washington? There is no pride to be had in such efforts. We are at war, a hard and challenging war, and we do no service for the best of us-those who fight and risk all on our behalf-by playing politics with their service."

In June, McCain apologized for using the image of Gen. David Petraeus in a political mailer, saying that politicization of the military would "not happen again" in his campaign.

Still, it appears that there's something of a pattern to the recent ads coming out of McCain's campaign. Compare the latest to another from last week, entitled "Troop Funding":

Is it a coincidence that such consistency of message on a blunt force topic like support for troops comes in the first month after Karl Rove protégé Steve Schmidt took over the day-to-day reins of McCain's campaign? If so, look for much more of this between now and November.

Script For "Troops" (TV :30)

Anncr: Barack Obama never held a single Senate hearing on Afghanistan.

He hadn't been to Iraq in years.

He voted against funding our troops.

And now, he made time to go to the gym, but cancelled a visit with wounded troops.

Seems the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras.

John McCain is always there for our troops.

McCain. Country first.

John McCain: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

UPDATE: Rhode Island Democrat Sen. Jack Reed responds to McCain's ad:

I was with Senator Obama last week as we met privately with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Senator Obama listened to their concerns and expressed his gratitude for their service without press or fanfare. He cares for our troops deeply and has worked hard to give them not only the resources they need, but also honor their service with a clearly defined mission and by providing them with the support they have earned when they come home. And just as Senator McCain's support of President Bush's veto of funding for our troops doesn't mean he does not support them, neither does Senator Obama's insistence that we not give George Bush a blank check.

IMO, this whole "visiting the troops issue" was a "SET-UP", coordinated by the Republicans with some of their hacks inside the Pentagon.--- Not the first time the Pentagon has been shown to be fully complicit in propagandizing for the GOP machine (OSP, buildup for war, failure to release accurate number os killed/wounded/ Pentagon-paid "pundits" to go out and shill the administration line on the MSM, etc.) Let's not forget that Karl Rove is orchestrating McCain's campaign behind the scenes with his own accolyte out front as campaign manager.

The planning of Obama's foreign tour was brilliant in scope and execution, and I simply do not think they would have been careless enough to cancel the trip to the hospital in Germany, had they not received some fairly pointed warning at the last minute that such a trip would be labeled as "only political" and openly castigated as such by the Pentagon and, of course, McCain. When he cancelled, the "TRAP" was set for the GOP and McCain to use against Obama! "Damned if you do; damned if you don't!"

One thing is now a proven fact: the Republicans will stoop to ANY LOW to maintain the White House and their own political/economic power!

High commendations to you, "wolf58", for posting this excellent, concise summary of McCAINS LACK OF SUPPORT FOR VETERANS! I hope you will post this on many other sites, too!

McCain must be exposed for the fraud he has become, for using his POW history for political gain, and for his reputed "foreign expertise", which he is sorely lacking!

I believe I'm a intellegent womean. I am a republican. However, this year I will vote Demacrate. I hold my family, grandkids and myself to higher standards than Mccain shows. I will not, willnot , will not, hold my party up above the safety of my family! My party are strangers to me, and you must protect your own! Mccain is a danger to this country! His memory problems is either age or emotional problems. You take your pick! But there is some thing wrong with a man who can't remember what foreign border a lines with others, or remember Al Queda and Iranians are enemy's! This man has made so many memory mistakes that it is apparent to the normal indivitual with any common sense that this old man is in trouble with his memory gaffe'ls that has become as reg. as you and I takeing a bath every day. I am sick at how the Media cover up the horrible trueth of this! This isn't a darn game people! This old man and his bad dangerouse memory problems could become a President with Nuclear power at his finger tips. I for one will fight that from happening!

as was RFK, makes that voter "intelligent?" Please explain. (You may need a dictionary--if you even HAVE one!--in order to understand my comment.)

You should have watched Meet the Press!
Every day Barak Obama is reminding more and more Americans what an American President should be!
That they should love this country instead of corporations.
That they should hate war instead of making a for profit endeavor!
They should respect our Constitution rather than viewing it as "...just a goddamned piece of paper" the way George w. AWOl and his owners do!

Mr. McCain, you don't stand a literate's chance in Mississippi come November and so for the children who still support you, go read a book!

Could it be that Larry Craig knowing most in his parties proclivities picked the site?

Curious isn't it?

Of course McCain, the troop lover, has just told Wolf Bitzer that he knows how to get Osama Bin Laden. Of course, rather than tell the Bush Admin, he will keep it to himself for political gain, and let the troops in Afghanistan keep dying.

You have a long history of voting against veterans and active duty or you don't vote at all so nobody can pin you down on it, in other words a cowardous act. I'm Vet and you are as bad as Bin Bush when it comes to the troops. You forgot the golden rule Never leave a soldier behind. Your votes show thats all you do, leave us behind.

2005: Obama voted for Senate passage (Vote 109, April 21) of an emergency supplemental appropriations bill, which passed 99 to 0. He also voted for the final House-Senate compromise version of the same legislation (Vote 117, May 10), which passed 100 to 0.

Obama voted for the Senate version (Vote 254, Oct. 7), which passed 97 to 0 and also for the final compromise (Vote 366, Dec. 21), which passed 93 to 0.

2006: Obama supported another emergency supplemental appropriations bill, which included war funding and much else, voting for a cloture motion to end debate and schedule a vote (Vote 103, May 2). The measure passed 92 to 4, with four Democrats opposed for reasons other than war funding. He then voted for Senate passage (Vote 112, May 4). The bill was approved by a vote of 77 to 21, with only Republican opposed, and finally, Obama voted for the final House-Senate compromise version (Vote 117, June 15), which passed 98 to 1, with a single Republican voting against it.

Again in 2006, Obama supported the regular Pentagon appropriations bill, which included $50 billion in "contingency funding" intended for the first six months of war funding. He voted for Senate passage of that bill (Vote 239, Sept. 7), which passed 98 to 0, and also for the House-Senate compromise version (Vote 261, Sept. 29) which passed 100 to 0.
