New Trip Top

John McCain is welcoming Barack Obama back to America with a hard right cross.

The message of the Republican's new attack ad that debuted Saturday both perfects and makes more harsh a theme that his campaign has been developing for weeks: specifically, that the Illinois Democrat does not care about American troops. Drawing from Obama's one tactical misstep during his week-long trip abroad -- a canceled visit with wounded troops in Germany, the cause of which was a debate with the Pentagon over political propriety -- the McCain campaign nevertheless believes they have a useful new plot point at their disposal.

When viewed alongside the 900 days that elapsed between visits to Iraq, and his symbolic vote against one round of funding for the war, the McCain camp now hopes the canceled visit in Germany provides a three-act structure to their dramatic imagining of a conflict between Obama and the troops.

Of course, in one particular aspect, McCain's playwrights have resorted to wholesale fiction in order to craft their narrative. However complicated the issue of Obama's canceled troop visit has become, no one -- not the campaign, and not the Pentagon -- has cited a prohibition on "bring[ing] cameras" along with Obama as a reason for the trip's scuttling.

In another distortion that could be viewed as funny were it no so manipulative, McCain's video editor selected footage of Obama sinking a three-point shot to represent time spent at the gym instead of with troops. Of course, that footage was taken in Kuwait, not Germany, at an event for ... troops.

"John McCain is an honorable man who is running an increasingly dishonorable campaign," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor in an email to reporters Saturday evening, adding: "Senator McCain knows full well that Senator Obama strongly supports and honors our troops, which is what makes this attack so disingenuous. Senator Obama was honored to meet with our men and women in uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan this week and has visited wounded soldiers at Walter Reed numerous times. This politicization of our soldiers is exactly what Senator Obama sought to avoid, and it's not worthy of Senator McCain or the 'civil' campaign he claimed he would run."

The Obama campaign also sent along an excerpt from the Congressional Record meant to embarrass McCain for his present tactics. In a floor speech from May 2007, the Arizona Republican said:

Story continues below

"How can we possibly find honor in using the fate of our servicemen to score political advantage in Washington? There is no pride to be had in such efforts. We are at war, a hard and challenging war, and we do no service for the best of us-those who fight and risk all on our behalf-by playing politics with their service."

In June, McCain apologized for using the image of Gen. David Petraeus in a political mailer, saying that politicization of the military would "not happen again" in his campaign.

Still, it appears that there's something of a pattern to the recent ads coming out of McCain's campaign. Compare the latest to another from last week, entitled "Troop Funding":

Is it a coincidence that such consistency of message on a blunt force topic like support for troops comes in the first month after Karl Rove protégé Steve Schmidt took over the day-to-day reins of McCain's campaign? If so, look for much more of this between now and November.

Script For "Troops" (TV :30)

Anncr: Barack Obama never held a single Senate hearing on Afghanistan.

He hadn't been to Iraq in years.

He voted against funding our troops.

And now, he made time to go to the gym, but cancelled a visit with wounded troops.

Seems the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras.

John McCain is always there for our troops.

McCain. Country first.

John McCain: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

UPDATE: Rhode Island Democrat Sen. Jack Reed responds to McCain's ad:

I was with Senator Obama last week as we met privately with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Senator Obama listened to their concerns and expressed his gratitude for their service without press or fanfare. He cares for our troops deeply and has worked hard to give them not only the resources they need, but also honor their service with a clearly defined mission and by providing them with the support they have earned when they come home. And just as Senator McCain's support of President Bush's veto of funding for our troops doesn't mean he does not support them, neither does Senator Obama's insistence that we not give George Bush a blank check.

I'm watching O on MTP with Brokaw.

Is Kristol's take on the surge that it wouldn't have been needed if the generals had been listened to who said more troops would be needed from the start?

It makes me think how can a Democrat ever win an election when a whole television network is campaigning for McBush.

The problem with this idea of the surge is that in a country of about 25 millions and the
constant fire fights, insurgent round ups and killings, one way or the other, they
either run out of fighters or funds. It's not so much that the surge is working but that
they are either dead or broke. It has been going on for over 5 years now, so even
the looting of the money before the troops reached Baghdad and Saddam's red
haired "wonder boy" must be strapped for cash because they were Sunnis. Did they
ever catch "Red?"

I think that if McCain really cared about "comforting" our injured troops he and his ilk wouldn't have authorized the unnecessary war that put them in harm's way! Also, I think it's pretty arrogant for McCain to pretend that the troops would have been so gratified if some big shot politician had come to visit them. What is purely political here is McCain's ridiculous reaction to this. He's simply capitalizing on something he knows some of the electorate back home will respond to -- it has nothing to do with the troops.

Right, and it would have made them fodder for McCain and his cronies when they attacked Obama for "using" them for his politcal gain.

He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. If he would have went, you would have been on here criticizing him for using the wounded troops for political purposes.

As we speak John McCain is on with George Stephanapoulas 's show with is inherently dishonest agrgument to stay in Iraq .Here is the big lie his rhetoric is based on.As of Dec 31st 2008 the U.N Sanctioned mandaye tha allowed us to go into Iraq is expired. The Sovereign nation of IRAQ has already stated they do not want to renew it .We are there at the discretion of the Iraq government. They want us there as long as it is good for them which Malicki has already eleuded to the timeline of about 18 months.Obama is in step with the Iraqi's wishes and McCain is still selling his unfounded "wahatever it takes" argument .According to John McCain he will allow us to be occupiers in a sovereign nation with an elected government.Obama on the other hand states we wil allow the Iraqi's the right to run there own nation and we will be good partners but we will also look to what is best for our own nation as well.McCain has no founding mandate or political will that works as a foundation to his Iraq policy and the fact that they now are a free nation.Obama's Iraq policy os based on facts.McCain does not acknowledge the looming expiration of the U.N sanctioned mandate.Obama does not .Obama is showing honest thoughtful leadership and McCain is still denying the facts both from the U.N.mandate and the Iraqi government.

I fear you are precisely correct. I'm sixty and I think my generation is the last one that truly remembers living in a non-polarized country. If one returns to view the Kennedy-Nixon debates one cannot help but to be struck by how respectful they were to each other. My children are in their thirties and forties. I've had to cajole them to register to vote. They have felt that participation was pointless and they didn't want to be involved in anything so dirty. Of course, Nixon went on to practice an especially low form of hate politics and we've been living with the consequences ever since. McCain said he wanted to run a "respectful" campaign. What an odd way to show respect. The Republicans stole Christianity and turned it into something almost unrecognizable. Filled with hate. Now, they have almost completed the same task with democracy. If this election is lost to these hate mongers I fear we will never be able to recover the society we once had. There have always been strong political and policy differences, but they were not driven by hatefulness and disrespect. True American conservatives and traditional Republicans must feel immense shame.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. I think Carl Rove is in the mix here. Sounds like his mode of operation.

As far as politicization of the military how can they not be politicized when we invaded a sovereign nation and now occupy it.

Here are a few Questions for “Mr. I’m for the troops McCain” and his own little band of ditto heads

If the generals got an 8% raise shouldn’t the troops get 8% as well? I think they got 2%.

With “all your experience on how to win wars” and your having watched and supported this one for so long how is it that you have never called into question the corruption that abounds in the country that we are trying to help? 360 tons of $100 dollar bills shipped to Iraq with Paul Bremmer in charge and at best little accounting of where that money went. Missing weapons, who is really counting the barrels of oil, soldiers killed because electric circuits aren’t grounded, bad water for our troops? There is apparently big money in playing “whack-a-mole”

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:21 AM on 07/27/2008

Nobody is playing "Whack-A-Mole" in Iraq. We are hanging onto areas we have taken, and consolidating our gains. We are following the successful "Clear, Hold, Build" strategy.

If you want to hear a "What-A-Mole" strategy, look to BHO.

'We whacked all the moles in Iraq, so now we need to get the heck out of there. There's all these moles over here in Afghanistan, and they're taunting us.'

"But what if Al Qaeda re-emerges in Iraq"

'Well that's a good point, but you see, we'll redeploy forces back to Iraq as necessary to continue responding to their taunts and movements. At least until they're whacked again, then it's all about Afghanistan. Remember, Iraq never attacked us on 9/11.'

etc.

Hey there everybody! WhiskyDave here on a gorgeous Sunday morning!
My apologies for any misspellings that may occur in my post. Please keep the flamin'
to a minimum. Anyhoo, to all of you McCain supporters out there who keep burping up
his talking points as if they were taken from the Gospel, I have a question for you. Do you want
our country to isolate itself even further from the world? Do you want our country to blunder its way into another ill-conceived war? Do you want even more of our soldiers to become maimed or killed? Please, McCain supporters, explain to the rest of us why you are willing to damage and destroy our country and our soldiers? And this time, please use original thought.
Thank you and have a great day.
WhiskyDave
P.S. To Cocteau's Twin. Great name! Elizabeth Frazier is one classy singing lady!
