Obama Campaign Manager: No "Bounce" Expected From Overseas Trip

Campaign manager David Plouffe says the smooth foreign swing by Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) will help win votes in the long run but won't produce an immediate surge in polls.

"We wouldn't expect any sort of, I guess the term people use is 'bounce,'" Plouffe said by phone from campaign headquarters in Chicago.

The manager, noting that he pays less attention to national polls than polls in key states, said his campaign views the general-election as "five months in totality."

"We view everything as kind of a package - there's not going to be any one thing that is decisive," he said. "It was an important week, but it was just one week in this campaign. Come November 4th, this week will be important to voters, but every week will be."

Nevertheless, Plouffe may be pleasantly surprised. A Gallup daily tracking poll releasd Saturday found that Obama had stretched his lead over McCain among national registered voters to seven points -- 48 percent to 41 percent -- tying his widest previous lead, notched in early June.

The MSM is trying to make a race out of this when it fact poor Johnny McCrashTest has fallen down and can't get up.

The media requires viewers and rather than provide meaningful disscussion of real issues they try and
create conflict and contest.

This is the WWF of campaigns, seceret, the GOOD GUY WINS !!!

McCain will make a comeback when he names the Dalai Lama as his vice-president. He told him during their meeting that he's always loved his paintings of the melting clocks.

I am convinced that the MSM is manipulating this campaign as many of you are. With all the gaffes that JohnnyMac is making and all the hiding of those gaffes by the MSM,I can't believe this thing is as close as they say.
JohnnyMac has said nothing of substance even before Barack went on this trip, and he has not said anything or done anything to change that perspective.

This election is going to won or lost on the ground, not via the MSM. It's in their interests to make the race look as close as possible.

I agree with you. There will be an enthusiasm gap with the GOP this Fall, and we can only take advantage of it if we continue to ID voters and get our supporters to the polls on Election Day. No single thing, no "magic bullet" is going to convince a tidal wave of likely voters to select Obama. But as Obama continues to show that he has the judgement and temperment to be President, that will slowly break down the resistance of a small but significant number of people who currently think they're "supposed to prefer" McCain.

The significance of this "week that was" is what it implies, and bodes for the future. One gets the idea that O can have a LOT of weeks like this; he doesn't have to take any overseas trips to do so. He's looking smooth, in control, etc. Alternately, Johnny Mack can have a lot more of HIS type of week, on the defensive, griping, sniping.....

The tone for the next three months has been set. The McCain camp must grok this, and is desperately squirming around trying to find a way to turn things around and get back on offense. But they've got two big obstacles standing in their way. One is named Barack Obama and the other is named John McCain.

Polls only count those gullible enough to answer unsolicited phone calls on their land lines, the most gullible of Americans and Mccains base

You're right. Most of my friends don't have landlines any more, and the ones that do have got caller ID and wouldn't dream of picking up a call they didn't recognise.... Who are these mysterious people who respond to polls...?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:11 AM on 07/27/2008

Bored and lonely people, or seniors who don't understand or have Caller ID. I think some of them just like to mess with pollsters, too.

Actually the only ones left with landlines are the ones who would be
inclined to vote for McCrashTest.

Even so, he is floudering.

Please stop using the word "surge" in these reports.

I don't believe Plouffe on this one. By all rights O should get a bump from this trip. Maybe not right away, but his junket was an unqualified success, and should address several concerns of people who aren't sure about him. I'm sure the campaign expect an uptick in the polling.

You spoke too soon, Plouffe.

I hope he gets a big bounce. It is too early to know. Wait until the end of next week's polls come out. How could Americans not be proud of his Presidential, thoughtful, knowledgeable, articulate, well bred performance? Every leader he met seemed very impressed. As Jon Stewart noted; It was nice to see foreigners waving American flags that were not on fire.

I am tried of this word BOUNCE. Obama is not going to get a Bounce, Obama is not going to get those undecided voters period. Hell 25% to 30% of voters admitted during the Primary that that are not going to vote for him just because he is black. (And equally white.) I did not agree with a lot of the things that Rev Wright said but the man did speak some truth about America.

The world weeps at the thought of a McCain Presidency.

Wrong - it bounced me seeing 200,000 people across the world appreciating him and what he stands for. If it bounced me it bounced others also.

Wrong...get it through your head, those 200K people weren't there to see Obama, they were there to cheer for anyone who will replace Bush. They have no idea what Obama stands for, he's simply the non-Bush to them. McCain, they know, is the third Bush.

Really? True they hate Bush, but you are letting some color bleed thru, me thinks.
200k would have also shown up for Edwards? Hillary? Knowing the motivation for 200,000 people you probably have never met must be very empowering!

I hate to break it to you -- but Berlin Press estimated 20K not 200K.

Think of it -- that narrow mall is only one mile long -- do you really think you can fit nearly a quarter million people in that one mile stretch?

But of course the inflated number is re-quoted.

I live in Europe, and the Berlin Police were quoting more than 200k. Sorry...

He would certainly get a bounce. Americans want the USA to be beloved throughout the world, and that's what Obama represents. One of the main reasons why Bush's foreign policies are laughed at is that no world leader takes him seriously unless he aims to bomb their countries.
