LONDON — Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama brushed aside Republican criticism of his overseas trip on Saturday and stood outside the famed 10 Downing Street to say that both President Bush and Sen. John McCain were moving his way on the key issues of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hours before flying home, Obama also suggested his poll numbers might dip in the coming days, adding: "We have been out of the country for a week. People are worried about gas prices and home foreclosures."

At the same time, he said the journey to two war zones, the Mideast and Europe was important because "many of the issues that we face at home are not going to be solved as effectively unless we have strong partners abroad."

Obama flew home to Chicago Saturday night.

Republicans have criticized Obama throughout his trip, and McCain's campaign said recently the Democrat was taking a "premature victory lap" with more than 100 days remaining in the presidential campaign.

In Arizona on Saturday, McCain took a swipe at the headline-making trip in a radio address on Iraq and energy that his campaign made available to the media: "With all the breathless coverage from abroad, and with Sen. Obama now addressing his speeches to the people of the world, I'm starting to feel a little left out. Maybe you are, too."

But Obama sought to turn that back on his critics. He said McCain had earlier been "telling me I was supposed to take this trip. He suggested it and thought it was a good idea."

"John McCain has visited every one of these countries post-primary that I have," he said. "So it doesn't strike me that we have done anything different than the McCain campaign has done, which is to recognize that part of the job of the next president, commander in chief is to forge effective relationships with our allies."

The trip was designed by the campaign to show Obama on an international stage in a way that aides hoped would reassure voters who have doubts about his ability to become commander in chief or chart a course for American foreign policy. Jews at home were an audience of particular concern, reflected in his two-night stay in Jerusalem.

McCain has long opposed Obama's call for a 16-month timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq. On Friday, though, McCain said, "I think it's a pretty good timetable, as we should _ or horizons for withdrawal," echoing a phrase Bush used in recent days. "But they have to be based on conditions on the ground."

At his news conference, Obama jumped on that to say there was now some convergence "around a proposal that we have been making for a year and a half."

He also said McCain supports sending additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan, "and the Bush administration acknowledges that as well. I have been talking about that since last year," he said.

The senator also said he had canceled a planned trip to visit wounded members of the armed forced in Germany after officials told him a retired two-star general who is an adviser was considered campaign staff and "it would therefore be perceived as political because he had endorsed my candidacy but wasn't on the Senate staff."

He said that as a result, he scrapped the trip to avoid injecting political controversy into a visit to wounded troops.

Obama's final day in Europe included meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the official residence at 10 Downing Street and with Conservative Party Leader David Cameron in the opposition party's offices in Parliament. Brown's government is unpopular, and his party recently lost a local election that underscored its weakness.

Still, Obama said he had no advice for Brown. "You are always more popular before you are actually in charge of things. And then, you know, once you are responsible then you are going to make some people unhappy, and that is just the nature of politics," he said.

He also breakfasted with former Prime Minister Tony Blair, now a Middle East envoy.

I can't fathom why O is losing strenght in the polls. Can people in the country really be that dumb? He was brilliant on this trip, there were no gaffes, so what is the matter with people. Is it bad to actually look Presidential? Do we not want someone who can speak intelligently to the worlds leaders, and inspire admiration and respect?

WTF are people thinking? Will this be another colossal mistake like 2004 was? If jmac is elected what we face is the draft and another great depression.

At the risk of sounding pessimistic, this is going to be a close race,. Make no mistake about it.

B O is in what's called a Catch-22 position - damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

The argument by some that no matter what he does, many will not vote for him is becoming more legitimate as the election draws nearer. This, therefore should be a warning sign to those who would like to see a change come Jan 2009 that we cannot afford to be complacent. Not for a minute.

I agree that we should not be complacent. That means not only hanging out on blogs conversing, but actually getting involved on the ground with the Obama campaign volunteering actively. Testifying to every person you encounter, however, if they don't want to hear it, be polite.

You know what McCain's problem is and Hilary too suffered from this problem in the primary. He is so busy attacking Obama at every turn that his policies his ideas are being lost or drowned out. Thats one of the drawbacks to running a campaign where you just atttack attack attack. He did the same thing that Barack did. Barack couldnt do it when he did because then it would be presumptious. The primary is over he has sometime before the Convention so he decides to do what he did earlier. Obama was going to take this trip whether McCain said he should or not it is clear to me but you go to love how he didnt hesitate to point out that McCain suggest it. Maybe McCain will think about following Obamas lead and get his transition people together but since Obama is criticize for that too I wonder how he will justify it.

He is spending so much time bashing Obama and putting forth his ridiculous nonsense about oil drilling the American people are being fed crap and now that Obama is back they will get a full dosing of COMMON SENSE.

The American people is so scared you can tell them anything and they buy it. They dont think thank goodness Obama is coming back and forcing them to think. Now is the time to use Bill Clinton in those areas like PA and OH. These people are suffering and yet still vote against their interests.

After 40 years, it feels so good to have one of our leaders and therefore ourselves and our country respected and revered by the rest of the world again-the people and their leaders. Seeing the broad smiles on the faces of those people and leaders when Obama is present tells the whole story. What a great feeling! What a relief! We're well on our ways to being back "on top of the world" again (in the best and most benign sense of that phrase) !

Just a few months ago John McCain was running around in presidential limosines with George Bush and standing on the steps of the White House, not to mention taking his own trips abroad. He stopped being seen with Bush because his campaign realized it was not going to win over independents. He has been very presumptuous and arrogant in his campaigning and he has the nerve, the audacity to pretend that Obama is those things. He is so accustomed to having the media eating out of his hands with the free BBQ and BEER, he is now in a state of shock about the fact that they are doing their job by reporting on Obama's trip. I guess somebody needs to let McCain know that he is not un-opposed in this campaign.

I happened to see comments on the local Fox news channel in Dallas regarding McCain's statements the past week. I was shocked to hear them point out that he was being a hypocrite. They also pointed out his numerous gaffes AND reported quickly on CBS changing McCain's comments to keep him from looking stupid.

Their minders must have been in the toilet and a few bits of truth slipped by ... Either that or maybe the cracks are beginning to grow in his media armor.

While McPain still mulls Nuclear Enery and offshore-drilling as the solution to future energy shortages,

a. in France, over 100 people got exposed to nuclear radiation during several severe mechanical failures in not one, but several nuclear power plants, and

b. "Ole Man River", the Mississippi (Quite a lot of esses and I's in that word; PEW!) got polluted with 800,000 gallons of diesel and had to be BLOCKED for several days to clean up that mess - that is, mop off 10 percent of it in staged photo-op's and hope, Mother Nature will do the rest for you, without the public watching too closely and noticing too much...

Your proposals for the future US-energy-supply look very promising, indeed, Mr. McPain...

So now the HEE HA Gang is at it again.

If they had ever truly cared about the soldiers they would have put them in the right war instead of the wrong one.

If John McCain had truly cared about the soldiers he would have shown up to vote for the New GI Bill instead of being Missing In Action.

So if the McCain people want to have a debate about the soldiers lets have a debate about the soldiers and while we are at it, explain to families who lost over 4000 plus soldier because McCain’s judgment lead us into the wrong war.

Most ridiculous editorial of the year goes to.....Wall Street Journal:

"A cry for help goes out from a city beleaguered by violence and fear: A beam of light flashed into the night sky, the dark symbol of a bat projected onto the surface of the racing clouds . . .

Oh, wait a minute. That's not a bat, actually. In fact, when you trace the outline with your finger, it looks kind of like . . . a "W."

There seems to me no question that the Batman film "The Dark Knight," currently breaking every box office record in history, is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by G eorge W. B ush in this time of terror and war. Like W, Batman is vilified and despised for confronting terrorists in the only terms they understand. Like W, Batman sometimes has to push the boundaries of civil rights to deal with an emergency, certain that he will re-establish those boundaries when the emergency is past.

And like W, Batman understands that there is no moral equivalence between a free society -- in which people sometimes make the wrong choices -- and a criminal sect bent on destruction. The former must be cherished even in its moments of folly; the latter must be hounded to the gates of Hell."

Batman is this popular because of an actor's death.
It is interesting to me that while Repubs insist that Hollywood is leftist and should be ignored in politics, Repubs themselves are the ones who elect actors and reference fictional stories in an effort to justify their actions.
As long as "art" is your interest, you'd be better served reading this summer - Vincent Bugliosi's "The Prosecution of George W Bush for Murder." While you were going to the air conditioned movies this summer, over 100,000 American soldiers, many well beyond their first tour of duty, were slogging through another summer in the middle east, unrelieved by the half of the country (cowards, in my opinion) who voted in 2004 to continue this madness but have no inclination to relieve or assist those very same troops.

Batman is popular because of an acor's death?

That's so incredibly misleading I'm almost dumbfounded.

Batman Begins was popular because it was a brilliant film, The Dark Knight is by all accounts also a great film, though the hype has been upped by the tragic death of a very talented young man, without that it would still have been a summer blockbuster by its nature.

The rest of your post makes sense and I have no issue with what you say, but please, don't disparage something that is in no way connected to Bush or McCain or trivialise the death of someone you didn't know.

What a splendid, patriotic honor for Batman to be held in the same regard as W!

WHY BUSH IS LIKE BATMAN:

1.Batman has no actual grounding in reality.

2. Batman ignores the laws that make his actions illegal and has psychological obsessions that drive him to do waht he does.

3. Batman is surrounded by people referred to as TwoFace and Joker.

4. Batman secretly has immense wealth and ownership in massive corporations.

5. Batman is connected with Rob(b)in.

Being that J'ohn Mc'Cain takes weekends off, I think it is important to get his message out. So here it is:

Surge, surge, surge, surge, surge, surge, surge, surge, surge, surge, surge, surge, surge, surge.

you're right. he should be glad that MSM hasn't paid him all the attention it could have this past week. Surge is the only message he didn't screw up too badly. every other time he opened his mouth, he was showing confusion or lack of knowledge and he was not called for any of it beyond scant recognition. Some of his gaffes are quite serious and should be covered by a couple news cycles, at least.

At least! Mc & his cohorts followed O around like lost, stray pups ... like circling sharks hoping for blood .... they got nothing and stll Mc has no home ... Mc can't even come up with an interesting, memorable logo of his own creation!!

Is it too wonderful to know that America has a home grown wonder who fits so well as POTUS!!? And why oh why wouldn't Repubs acknowlege that ... give O the personal respect that he deserves as he (O) gives to Mc's perceived achievements!?
