LONDON — Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama brushed aside Republican criticism of his overseas trip on Saturday and stood outside the famed 10 Downing Street to say that both President Bush and Sen. John McCain were moving his way on the key issues of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hours before flying home, Obama also suggested his poll numbers might dip in the coming days, adding: "We have been out of the country for a week. People are worried about gas prices and home foreclosures."

At the same time, he said the journey to two war zones, the Mideast and Europe was important because "many of the issues that we face at home are not going to be solved as effectively unless we have strong partners abroad."

Obama flew home to Chicago Saturday night.

Republicans have criticized Obama throughout his trip, and McCain's campaign said recently the Democrat was taking a "premature victory lap" with more than 100 days remaining in the presidential campaign.

In Arizona on Saturday, McCain took a swipe at the headline-making trip in a radio address on Iraq and energy that his campaign made available to the media: "With all the breathless coverage from abroad, and with Sen. Obama now addressing his speeches to the people of the world, I'm starting to feel a little left out. Maybe you are, too."

But Obama sought to turn that back on his critics. He said McCain had earlier been "telling me I was supposed to take this trip. He suggested it and thought it was a good idea."

"John McCain has visited every one of these countries post-primary that I have," he said. "So it doesn't strike me that we have done anything different than the McCain campaign has done, which is to recognize that part of the job of the next president, commander in chief is to forge effective relationships with our allies."

The trip was designed by the campaign to show Obama on an international stage in a way that aides hoped would reassure voters who have doubts about his ability to become commander in chief or chart a course for American foreign policy. Jews at home were an audience of particular concern, reflected in his two-night stay in Jerusalem.

McCain has long opposed Obama's call for a 16-month timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq. On Friday, though, McCain said, "I think it's a pretty good timetable, as we should _ or horizons for withdrawal," echoing a phrase Bush used in recent days. "But they have to be based on conditions on the ground."

At his news conference, Obama jumped on that to say there was now some convergence "around a proposal that we have been making for a year and a half."

He also said McCain supports sending additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan, "and the Bush administration acknowledges that as well. I have been talking about that since last year," he said.

The senator also said he had canceled a planned trip to visit wounded members of the armed forced in Germany after officials told him a retired two-star general who is an adviser was considered campaign staff and "it would therefore be perceived as political because he had endorsed my candidacy but wasn't on the Senate staff."

He said that as a result, he scrapped the trip to avoid injecting political controversy into a visit to wounded troops.

Obama's final day in Europe included meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the official residence at 10 Downing Street and with Conservative Party Leader David Cameron in the opposition party's offices in Parliament. Brown's government is unpopular, and his party recently lost a local election that underscored its weakness.

Still, Obama said he had no advice for Brown. "You are always more popular before you are actually in charge of things. And then, you know, once you are responsible then you are going to make some people unhappy, and that is just the nature of politics," he said.

He also breakfasted with former Prime Minister Tony Blair, now a Middle East envoy.

Obama has become a political hack. In his run-up to becoming the Dem nominee his words were full of serious change (we could believe in). Now it's become "the same we can believe in." He has duped millions of sincere supporters. How? By voting for the FISA bill(it's ok to spy on people), pledging loyalty to AIPAC, wanting to send 10,000 more troops to Afghanistan, threatening the soverign nation of Pakistan, along with aggressive rhetoric towards Iran, but none towards clean hands, Israel, who have tons of WMD.

He's another American Imperialist in a new suit and in a very nicely polished package. It's the same old crap with a different look. At first he inspired me, but I'm not that naive, especially after his moves to right of center. I'm looking for someone else to vote for. All in all, the entire American political system has been sick for a long time and needs an overhaul from the bottom up. Obama isn't going to do it. He pretends to be a grass roots candidate, but he's not. He's just another flip-flopping, political opportunist, connected to and working for the power base and not the people.

Wow. This is the only comment you've ever posted here. makes me wonder.....

FYI, O was always a centrist pragmatic politician, never an ideological lefty. Some of us are mature enough to realize that he's running for President of the United States not for president of the left wing of Democratic party. If you're unhappy with the way things are, vote Obama and support more left candidates down ticket. Otherwise, go away.

As far as FISA goes, I've been wondering if some folks just don't like the idea of a black man having almost unlimited power? I'm hoping President Obama will go Nixonian and use his new powers to destroy the Republican party! We Democrats have just been to darn nice. We need another Woodrow Wilson and another Red Scare, but this time instead of communists, we'll go after fundamentalist christians and fear-mongering media magnates and corporate clowns.

An extremely successful trip for Mr. Obama. Now that he has reassured the American public on his foreign policy credentials, it's now time to renew his focus on domestic issues that have become the number one concern of Americans. I believe that he has the potential to take this in a landslide if he continues to run his campaign as excellent as he has been. There is still some work out there to be done though. His campaign must remain steadfast and diligent, leaving nothing up to chance. They must fight hard for every vote, assiduously implementing the 50 State strategy. He should pound McCain on the economy relentlessly as soon as he returns. With such campaigning, his rewards will be great come this fall because America is ready for a change.

I agree. Now that he has knocked Mc Cain down a couple pegs on foreign policy related issues, he can now pivot to the economy, and finish the old man off.

I agree. He's done all he can on foreign policy, until the debate. Now is the time to hit those battleground states and talk economy, economy, economy, and energy, energy, energy. Pocketbook issues. Enough with the large rallies. Time to roll up the sleeves and "feel the pain".

After this trip I'm going to guess McSame won't be giving Sen. O anymore campaign advice LOL.

This was necessary trip for Sen. O and he handled it brilliantly and did our country proud. Now that that's over it's time he start kicking McSame's butt on all issues involving our failing economy.

Deser’tLight

You’re question here about “decidedly low key” carries no argument on any facts, the question you are asking is like that of a nat circling the picnic table. Ger’many and Fra’nce and Eng’land all are different allies and has different approaches when it comes to engagement of that country.

O has already given high profile world stage commentaries or speeches, Eng’land’s approach for O was “decidedly low key” for many different reasons but you lack the cognitive process to understand those facts and refuse to see why.

Eng"land? What the hell kind of spelling is that? Also are you aware that England is in fact just one of the consituent nations of the United Kingdom?

Please get these things correct for being patronising.

Also "Eng"land's approach for O" makes no sense. Surely you mean "O's approach to the UK"?

Further more you're is an abreviation of you are, your is a genetive meaning of or belonging to you.

* On July 21st, McCain said on Good Morning America that the situation was tough in Afghanistan, particularly, he said, given the struggle on the Iraq-Pakistan border.

* On July 22 in an interview Katie Couric of CBS, McCain said the troop surge President Bush ordered in January 2007 and which didn't reach maximum tactical deployment for months after led to the so-called Sunni awakening or uprising against Al Qaeda in Iraq terrorists. While the surge no doubt gave greater confidence to Sunnis over time, the awakening began in the fall of 2006 with the moves against AI Qaeda by a collection of high-profile tribal sheiks.

* On July 23, McCain said the surge wasn't really about more troops, but counter-insurgency tactics. And yet the political credit McCain seeks for the turn-around in Iraq is based principally on his advocacy if the surge - meaning more troops to carry out counter-insurgency missions. To say the surge wasn't really about more troops undercuts much of McCain.

* On July 24th, McCain called Iraq the first major conflict since 9/11. Tell that to Hamid Karzai, current President of Afghanistan and brought to power by the US-led defeat of the Taliban in the months immediately following 9/11.

* And Friday on CNN, McCain said 16 months for a troop withdrawal from Iraq is a pretty good timetable. His campaign said McCain meant it was good so long as conditions on the ground warranted troop withdrawals. But the damage was done.

Not to mention that broadening the definition of the surge into whatever unintelligible mess he now claims is pretty stupid. Obama can now say he was for a different kind of surge--all the military change in tactics to capitialize on changing dynamics on the ground other than upping troop numbers and a diplomatic surge to go at the political issues head on.

A growing number of Americans rely solely on a cell phone for their telephone service, and many more are considering giving up their landline phones. This trend presents a challenge to public opinion polling, which typically relies on a random sample of the population of landline subscribers. A new study of the issue finds that cell-only Americans – an estimated 7%-9% of the general public – are significantly different in many ways from those reachable on a landline. They are younger, less affluent, less likely to be married or to own their home, and more liberal on many political questions.
