LONDON — Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama brushed aside Republican criticism of his overseas trip on Saturday and stood outside the famed 10 Downing Street to say that both President Bush and Sen. John McCain were moving his way on the key issues of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hours before flying home, Obama also suggested his poll numbers might dip in the coming days, adding: "We have been out of the country for a week. People are worried about gas prices and home foreclosures."

At the same time, he said the journey to two war zones, the Mideast and Europe was important because "many of the issues that we face at home are not going to be solved as effectively unless we have strong partners abroad."

Obama flew home to Chicago Saturday night.

Republicans have criticized Obama throughout his trip, and McCain's campaign said recently the Democrat was taking a "premature victory lap" with more than 100 days remaining in the presidential campaign.

In Arizona on Saturday, McCain took a swipe at the headline-making trip in a radio address on Iraq and energy that his campaign made available to the media: "With all the breathless coverage from abroad, and with Sen. Obama now addressing his speeches to the people of the world, I'm starting to feel a little left out. Maybe you are, too."

But Obama sought to turn that back on his critics. He said McCain had earlier been "telling me I was supposed to take this trip. He suggested it and thought it was a good idea."

"John McCain has visited every one of these countries post-primary that I have," he said. "So it doesn't strike me that we have done anything different than the McCain campaign has done, which is to recognize that part of the job of the next president, commander in chief is to forge effective relationships with our allies."

The trip was designed by the campaign to show Obama on an international stage in a way that aides hoped would reassure voters who have doubts about his ability to become commander in chief or chart a course for American foreign policy. Jews at home were an audience of particular concern, reflected in his two-night stay in Jerusalem.

McCain has long opposed Obama's call for a 16-month timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq. On Friday, though, McCain said, "I think it's a pretty good timetable, as we should _ or horizons for withdrawal," echoing a phrase Bush used in recent days. "But they have to be based on conditions on the ground."

At his news conference, Obama jumped on that to say there was now some convergence "around a proposal that we have been making for a year and a half."

He also said McCain supports sending additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan, "and the Bush administration acknowledges that as well. I have been talking about that since last year," he said.

The senator also said he had canceled a planned trip to visit wounded members of the armed forced in Germany after officials told him a retired two-star general who is an adviser was considered campaign staff and "it would therefore be perceived as political because he had endorsed my candidacy but wasn't on the Senate staff."

He said that as a result, he scrapped the trip to avoid injecting political controversy into a visit to wounded troops.

Obama's final day in Europe included meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the official residence at 10 Downing Street and with Conservative Party Leader David Cameron in the opposition party's offices in Parliament. Brown's government is unpopular, and his party recently lost a local election that underscored its weakness.

Still, Obama said he had no advice for Brown. "You are always more popular before you are actually in charge of things. And then, you know, once you are responsible then you are going to make some people unhappy, and that is just the nature of politics," he said.

He also breakfasted with former Prime Minister Tony Blair, now a Middle East envoy.

Senator Obama does not need to defend his trip overseas. The fact that the trip was so successful speaks volumes and is the reason for the GOP and corporate media grousing. Both criticized the fact that he hadn't been over there, which, was where McCain was during the Democratic primaries as he complained about Senator Obama's lack of foreign affairs experience. Look, we have a party desperately grasping at straws as they continue to support an out of touch, mean tempered candidate whose view of women is questionable at best http://www.huffingtonpost.com/e-joyce-moore/mccain-supportive-of-wome_b_113503.html Nitpick all you want, Senator Obama scored a near-perfect win on the international level both as an American citizen and a leader.

Seen the youtube of him out the front of 10 Dowling St?

No teleprompter. No Notes. Artuiculate, road based and coherant overview of many world issues.

What a dude.

did he look dejected because he left alone without a big photo-op press conference with the PM?

BTW no one has said 0-man is stooooooopid. He has been thoroughly briefed and has given the schitch all over the ME and Europe all week...no one would expect all those ems, dahs and ers under these circumstances. It is only when he has to be spontaneous without teleprompter or a learned speech written for him that he becomes less than inspirational and eloquent. Like in all the debates he lost to the opposition. He is a wonderful doppelganger.

Well the really telling part to this is that they ALL met with Obama, they take him more seriously than many AMericans (hard working white blue collar men and women etc...chuckle) and more seriously than the commercail media and pundits.

The prime minister's emphasis _ like mine _ is on how we can strengthen the trans-Atlantic relationship to solve problems that can't be solved by any single country individually," he said.

Why didn't he do anything about this the 143 days he served in office?

First of all, I am not voting for JMc, as usual another stereotypical assumption.

Next, this quote was attributed to O, not JMc. Therefore, he should answer for it.

The exact same reason H-i11ary didn't.
Party-before-country Reepers would never give Dems a veto override, so legislation died once it got to the Senate. Either by not bothering to send it for vote because of imminent failure, or by the pen of GeeDubya.

THE EMPHASIS for ANY NEW AMERICAN PRESIDENT should be how to embrace and welcome and strengthen relationships WITH EVERY COUNTRY ON THIS PLANET. Elections come and elections go, but there is no one election MORE IMPORTANT for the American people and indeed the World. Our planet is changing, fueled by our over population and our negligence and our denial that we are the cause. IMMEDIATE CHANGE is needed globally for this planet we call home, to continue to sustain us as a species. I can think of NO GREATER NEED for a REAL PRESIDENT (not the oil thugs that have ruined our way of life, destroyed the lives of our loved ones, and murdered innocent humans around the world in the name of a war on terror), OR A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, to hit the world stage NOW, IMMEDIATELY, and make their plea to the world to forgive us as a nation for being STUPID ENOUGH TO ALLOW CREATURES LIKE bush and cheney TO RUIN OUR LIVES AND OUR IMAGE IN THE WORLD. The world still waits for America to lead. Obama is the ONLY HOPE for that to happen in this election, so if you think he was wrong to appeal to the world to begin CHANGING, just shut up.

so if you think he was wrong to appeal to the world to begin CHANGING, just shut up.

Wasn't saying he was wrong. I was saying that he never made that appeal until he became a candidate. He waited almost three years to get back there and did nothing to help the situation

, just shut up.......and blindly follow, right?

and that he wouldn't be surprised if there was a dip in some of the polls in the week since he left home.

A dip in the polls with rock star celebrity laden coverage that has only been rivaled by Je-sus entering JerUSAlem on Palm Sunday and a NY Yankee Ticker Tape Parade. The only thing they didn't do is shout, "H0sanna in the Highest!"

Oh, really? You must have missed all the negativity from Mitchell, CNN, your favorites on FOX, how McCain's stupid comments have been given a pass and replayed all week...and on and on.

But keep up the mythology about your kool-aid drinkers (now, apparently, circling the globe). I guess its the best the Republicans can do to try to diminish a -genuine- leader, instead of an intellectual lightweight and a buffoon (take your pick which is which).

Most recent results suggest that Sen. Obama need not worry about possible negative polling results (due to lack of attention on domestiic matters) as an outgrowth of the trip. Polling data often lags actual events by 3, 4 or even more days.

What initially appeared to be the narrowing of the Gallup and Rassmussen national tracking poll gap between Obama and McCain during the trip bounced yesterday to +6% and +5% margins respectively for Obama, suggesting that the trip may have actually had a positive impact politically.

I am afraid Obama cannot do everything he had intentions to change. It will be up to us to
get rid of the current congress and senate and get people who think forward like Obama does.
He will be blocked for they have their old comfortable ways "looking out for themselves and those
who have a lot of money for bribes."
