McCain Denies He Used 'The Word Timetable,' Claims 'We Were Greeted As Liberators'

During a January 30 Republican primary debate, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) pilloried former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for having once used the word "timetable" while talking about Iraq. "Timetables was the buzzword for those that wanted to get out," scoffed McCain.

But on the heels Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's embrace of a 16-month timetable for withdrawal, McCain has been forced to change his tune. "I think it's a pretty good timetable," McCain told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Friday.

Now, however, McCain is denying his own words. "I didn't use the word timetable," he told ABC's George Stephanopoulos in an interview airing today.

Later in the interview, McCain claimed he was right in his pre-war prediction that America would be "greeted as liberators." "We were greeted as liberators," McCain insisted. Watch it:

Okay, well if you go with the thread of his thinking (and it's a pretty scary and deluded thread), then liberators get out when the liberated ask them to. I believe that I heard the president of Iraq say that he wanted us to withdraw, and that 16 months sounds good to him. As "liberators", we should respect the request of the people that we supposedly freed. Otherwise, we don't deserve that title.

Sadly, you're probably right on the money.

But there aren't too many good options to explain his behavior. The extremes are basically

that he either honestly blieves he never said any of the things we have him on Youtube saying--which is frightening because it's not safe to have a man who forgets, misremembers, or simply fantasy-overrides his and other history--

or that he is well aware of what he said and did, but so detatched from reality that he doesn't understand that the Internet lets us watch his gaffes, or so contemptuous of the people of this nation that he expects us to just accept his changes withot calling him on them or being smart enough to deny him the vote based on his hypocrisy.
