I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama Brokaw

One of the most depressing parts of this Sunday morning's political fare was the sad sight of Tom Brokaw flying halfway around the world just so he could dully recite Friday's David Brooks column from the New York Times at a Barack Obama who must have been wondering if the National Broadcasting Company bought all their airtime at wholesale prices or something that it could be so wasted. Many commenters and emailers had the same head-cradled-in-hands-moaning sensation at the sight of it, and today, you can all say that you have been of the same mind of this site's founder, who emailed me soon after, stating her own incredulous disbelief.

Brokaw read more or less the entire column, panning the Berlin speech on the air, and Obama basically scoffed, citing the fact that there are nine good reviews of his Berlin speech to every negative one. He goes on to point out numerous examples in the speech that undercut Brooks' central thesis, insofar as he can be said to have one.

Really, when you read the piece, you hardly worry about Obama. You worry about Brooks! That Brooks is no longer impressed with Obama seems to be, by and large, a function of his own boredom. But, even if we take him at his word (and in fairness, it's completely understandable to be bored by Obama), one worries that Brooks is replacing "being rapt with Obama's rhetoric" with blank-headed cynicism:

Much of the rest of the speech fed the illusion that we could solve our problems if only people mystically come together. We should help Israelis and Palestinians unite. We should unite to prevent genocide in Darfur. We should unite so the Iranians won't develop nukes. Or as Obama put it: "The walls between races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down."

As Obama goes on to point out, Brooks is a McCain supporter. Here's Brooks providing his best version of McCain's campaign slogan: "Don't hope for a better life!"

Worse, Brooks goes on to make some terrifyingly myopic conclusions about history:

The great illusion of the 1990s was that we were entering an era of global convergence in which politics and power didn't matter. What Obama offered in Berlin flowed right out of this mind-set. This was the end of history on acid.

Since then, autocracies have arisen, the competition for resources has grown fiercer, Russia has clamped down, Iran is on the march. It will take politics and power to address these challenges, the two factors that dare not speak their name in Obama's lofty peroration.

Of course, the autocracies that have arisen, the resources which have dwindled, the clampdown in Russia and the rise of Iran are just four of the malign things that happened on the watch of President Bush, as a result of his "my mandate is to project blunt American power into the world forever and ever" doctrine One of the reasons Obama went to Europe was to signal that this great delusion of the 2000s was nearing an end.

That's why so many people cheered!

The current prominence of David Brooks as a conservative pundit just demonstrates the bankruptcy of talent on the right. He is second-rate, and will never approach the quality of thought of Williams Safire or Buckley. And any doubts that Tom Brokaw is a third-rate journalist were put to rest as he mindlessly tried to batter Obama with Brooks' flaccid piece.

Once again, Obama showed genuine Presidential carriage, character, and plain old smarts in his good-natured response to this effort to blind-side him.

All of these Sunday morning Obama bashing talk shows make perfect sense when you watch the commercial breaks. The networks are totally beholden to their sponsors: Exxon/Mobile .... BP .... Chevron ... and on ... and on ...

I watched the whole MTP and 0bama was phenomenal. Of course the only column he brings up is the Brooks column when most reviews of his Germany speech were very good. What kills me the most is that the press has bought into McBush's talking points that the surge is the only thing that matters. What the frack! We would not have needed the surge if idiots like McBush did not lie us into war. I saw Farreed (sp) GPS on CNN and he had an excellent panel with one excellent foreign female journalist who talked with many Iraqis, not just the military but the people and she said the people of Iraq has much more to do with slowing down the violence because they lashed out at Al Qaeda and were just plain tired of killing each other. This whole idea that the surge was this magical thing makes me want to puke.

Yes Obama is boring. And no one can blame that on his age like they do McCain. It's Obama's use of the same speech over and over again. This is our time...blah blah blah..I was raised by a single mom...blah, blah. same happy talk, same huge grin, but a different adoring crowd. It is Obama fatigue for sure. I'm sure the Germans were glad they got free music and beer.

Who has diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain?

Give up!? It's little Davie Brooks! We look forward to his articles - to use in our birdcage!

Whatever happened to journalists and newscasters - when did they begin to think that their opinions had value? Sorry, I shouldn't attribute that to all journalistis opinionators - but Brooks is one of the worse, worser, worstest!

If someone had told me at the beginning of this process that everyone who ran against Obama would argue, basically, that there is no hope for the world I would have laughed my butt off and said someone didn't understand the American psyche. We always believe we can win. We believe we can create jobs, and lower middle class taxes, that we can send our kids to college so that they will have a better life than we currently have. We believe that if it comes down to it we can green the country and make it economically viable, that we can have just laws and win wars while remaining true to the letter and the spirit of the constitution. No one is saying we're perfect, but we fight towards a better tomorrow each and every day. Who are these people telling us we can not succeed or that life is too hard or that we can't accomplish anything we set our mind to... Obama is going to be President in part because a nation of "can do" refuses to believe he can't change the world.

I LOVE this man... through the whole thing he never lost that megawatt smile.
He is so calm and easygoing that he had no problems deflecting TB's absurd questions (statements).
Like Sugar Ray Leonard.

Tom, you looked angry and annoyed - why is that?

"I LOVE this man."

This sentence is redundant, considering your screen name.

David Brooks like Krackhammer and Kristol are part of the BushCo Propaganda Network who claimed that Iraq had WMD and was a direct threat to the US.

How wrong they were but they still have their cushy jobs churning out garbage they make up.

O .... former editor Havard Law Review
Brokak/Brooks stuff shirt meat puppets

When are they going to learn that when they attack him he only gets stronger.

He laughs with ease at their barbs
he responds directly and without malice
Just think if we had a guy like that after 9/11
instead of a half wit cowboy
I truely admire his intelligence and class
He makes me seek better and less devisive solutions in my own affairs

Agree 100%.

I do not for a second become concerned when Obama is being interviewed by any of these so-called celebrity reporters. Who do you think has the upper hand and is in control - someone who went to Harvard Law and was smart enough to be Editor-in-Chief of the law review, or some simpleton who was a journalism major at a mediocre school and whose preparation consists more of getting their hair and makeup just right than anything else preparatory to an interview?

Do you think McCain's supporters feel the same - or are they constantly concerned he will not remember facts and/or will lose his temper?

"He makes me seek better and less devisive solutions in my own affairs"

Are you saying that you couldn't do this on your own? That without his "guidance" or whatever, you would seek out more divisive are worse solutions? What does that tell you?

As the tail end of the baby boomer generation, I'm about sick and tired of the damage that the group before me has caused (age 55-80), sorry, but it needs to be said. It's like dealing with older siblings and parents who've basically screwed things up and made our lives worse, rather than better.

So, to those I say, "Okay, thanks, but having seen and suffered from the damage you've caused, we've learned from your mistakes and now it's time WE do it our way.; the right way."

Well what do you expect from a person who goes by the moniker "meanguy"? Sweetness, rainbows and daffodils? His statements are generally on the level of the "Calvin p i s s i n g" cartoons you see on the rear windows of pickup trucks.
