Keira Knightley Refuses Breast Enhancement For "The Dutchess"

Keira Knightley has refused to allow any enhancement of her cleavage on publicity photos for her upcoming movie, "The Duchess," Britain's Daily Mail reports.

Studio heads reportedly want to enlarge Knightley's bosom in the photos, but the actress, 23, put her foot down.

The real question is why doesn't the studio simply choose an actress with the body type they desire. There are thousands of budding actresses who are looking for their 1st break; this is another silly argument which probably helps build up some interest in the film. Hollywood during its heyday pumped out one bombshell after the next during the Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe days; today it attempts to sell a body type which is hardy typical of the 'everyday' woman on the street. Even the modeling houses are recognizing that these zero sized flat chested woman are posing a serious health risk to many woman force to comply with a body standard that ultimately was set by males.

This is a tempest in a teapot and really a silly argument about an industry which should be using a large pool of women of all colors in its movies, rather than worrying about a flat chested actress who has convinced herself that looking like the Hollywood protype is normal. If she wants to 'think' normal, go to the local mall---most women aren't walking scare crows.

It IS a tempest in a teapot but to answer your question, there is rarely a performer who has all the wanted attributes for a role and they are going to pick the performer who best meets the goals of the project. In Keira Knightley's case she has certain assets and certain shortcomings, as anyone does.

Having chosen the performer, the next task is to look at what you can do to bring the performer closer to your vision. This includes many changes such as costuming, make-up, weight gain/loss, etc. -- it seems silly to have an ideological objection to fake breasts when you don't have any objection to other kinds of physical changes. I mean, why should she wear make-up? Shouldn't she be proud of her face the way it really is? Why do women WITH breasts wear those constricting bras? Shouldn't they be proud of their breasts in their natural, sagging state? Does Keira Knightley wear high heels? Why? Isn't that one step up from foot binding? (Or, to name a famous example, is Mark Wahlberg REALLY that endowed?). You can quickly see that both Keira Knightly and her fans are fixating on breasts, for ideological reasons, while overlooking the many physical (and digital) changes to an actor's appearance that are routinely done.

Plus, I agree with a previous commenter that it's stupid (and false advertising) to photoshop the actress in a photo if she isn't wearing stunt boobs in the film. But I don't see any problem with having her wear stung boobs in the film. Just like I don't object to hiding a female opera singer's breasts, curvy hips, etc. when she is playing a male role. The overall point is... it is a character, not the actor. The fact that people can't seem to tell the different just means we're in a world full of philistines.
