Has John McCain started to aggressively court the white vote?

It sounds like a question with an obvious answer. But when facing the first black nominee of a major party for president, the manner in which John McCain addresses white voters is bound to be a careful one -- and we may have just seen the first toe-dip. As several reports have pointed out, McCain's newly announced support for Arizona's anti-affirmative action ballot initiative over the weekend represents a reversal from ten years ago, when he called a similar effort "divisive."

As flip-flops go, however, this one was a gimmie. Obama, who has been careful not to define his political identity by his race, has largely avoided talking about affirmative action on the stump, and has even hinted at major changes to the program. Given that he faces an opponent who is unlikely to drill down on this particular flip-flop, McCain is relatively free to make the switch and reap the political benefit in battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan.

"Affirmative action continues to be a symbolic issue that people find very emotional," said Notre Dame political scientist Darren Davis. "And because we're not debating a specific policy proposal at the moment, it's an easy wedge issue that most every American has an opinion on. So therefore the political mileage is gonna be a lot higher." While Davis doesn't necessarily believe McCain's flip-flop was planned by the campaign, he believes they are likely monitoring its aftermath in order to get a feeling for how race issues can factor in the general election.

"I have been waiting for the way in which the McCain campaign would begin to begin to racialize the [election]," Davis said. "And I think this is perhaps the beginning of it. ... I'm not suggesting that McCain is playing the race card at the moment. But this is the beginning of a racialized sentiment being infused in the campaign."

Conservative writer Deroy Murdock disagrees, however, saying: "I don't think [this is] a specific effort to appeal to white voters. Anything John McCain is doing to emphasize color blindness or race neutrality is a recapitulation of the basic American ideal of equality." Regarding the flip-flop, Murdock notes the fact that a full decade has elapsed since McCain's previous position. "He's changed his mind, and I think he's doing the right thing."

More than anyone else in the last decade, the man who engineered Arizona's anti-affirmative action initiative has shown how powerful the politics of the issue can be. Ward Connerly, a former regent of the University of California system, has become adept at using direct democracy to end the policy, state by state, at the initiative level. By re-framing affirmative action as reverse racism against white people that must be stamped out, Connerly, who is one-quarter black, has found success in all four states where his initiatives have made the ballot -- even when prominent Republicans have stood in his way.

In an era of close races between the two major political parties, Connerly's initiatives can win by double-digits. ("Fake Republicans run the other way," Murdock noted. "And there are a lot of fake Republicans. That's one of the reasons the base is so dejected.")

Story continues below

What's interesting is that, while Obama seems to know affirmative action as presently managed could pose a problem for Democrats, he has yet to set a dramatic new course on the issue. In an ABC interview from 2007, the Senator suggested that his own daughters should be deemed "pretty advantaged" by college admissions crews -- suggesting that affirmative action should be morphed from a race-based program into a class-sensitive one. Nevertheless, in response to McCain's repositioning over the weekend, Obama tried to split the difference. On the one hand, he said he still supports affirmative action "when properly structured" to avoid quotas, but also said: "affirmative action is not going to be the long-term solution to the problems of race in America, because, frankly, if you've got 50 percent of African-American or Latino kids dropping out of high school, it doesn't really matter what you do in terms of affirmative action. Those kids aren't going to college."

While that's a balanced take, it also fails to address the critical constituency of white voters who are uncomfortable with the current state of affairs. Meanwhile, McCain appears to be making a direct effort, addressing the aggrieved.

In addition to his affirmative action pivot, McCain's weekend radio address tapped the vein of another target of Middle America's resentment. Referencing Obama's well-covered foreign trip to the Middle East and Europe last week, McCain offered the following dig: "With all the breathless coverage from abroad, and with Senator Obama now addressing his speeches to 'the people of the world,' I'm starting to feel a little left out," McCain said, adding: "Maybe you are too."

Rick Perlstein, author of Nixonland, said McCain's radio address brought to mind President Nixon's 1971 speech announcing wage and price controls. "Nixon sold the new policy on TV as a rescue of the American economy from 'the attacks of international money speculators,'" Perlstein said. "In this case, though, McCain isn't reaching back merely to Nixonian sentiment -- except in the fact that Nixon himself was reaching back to an ugly old Republican isolationism which had its heyday in the 1920s." (Once elected, of course, Nixon would flip-flop on both counts by going to China and supporting the "Philadelphia Plan" for affirmative action.)

The twin engines of racial resentment and isolationist sentiment may exist for McCain to power up this year as well, with immigration and high gas prices both serving as hot political topics. And just because the code words of Nixon's Southern Strategy -- busing and "states' rights" -- no longer exist today, that doesn't mean there aren't still votes to be gained by finding some new ones.

This is only the beginning. This guy is so desperate he is going to try anything and everything. Which is why he is unfit to be president.

I agree McCain is unfit to be President.

The political positions of most candidates "evolve" over the course of several years as conditions change, while other candidates hold consistent positions over the years which they would argue are so well-reasoned ("intelligently designed" , if you will), they require no adaptation to current conditions.

Sadly, Senator McCain's political positions do not fall into either category - they have neither evolved nor are they intellingently designed. Far from the straight-talking political maverick he would have you believe he is, Senator McCain appears to be a political waiter offering "politics du jour" from a junk food menu designed to fast feed the group to which he is currently speaking.

It is a politics of one-night stands. Consider the number of times he has been unable to "recall" what he said to whom on any number of issues.

We currently have a President who refuses to change his mind even when he's driving a bus over a cliff. In Senator McCain we have a presidential candidate who apparently doesn't know his own mind. Our country deserves better. Indeed, it requires better.

Every time McCain says "My Friends" it reminds me of the original film The Manchurian

Candidate, where the Koreans have them so brainwashed, and they call each other

and their Koreans as dear friends.

Hillary played the race card with her "hard working white people" pandering in WV and KY. Why shouldn't McCain try the same dodge?

Right now, he's getting crankier by the day. What I want to see is him really go entirely over the top in his less than honorable campaigning, and say something truly cringeworthy.

That was the downfall of Joe McCarthy. I'd be happy to see it happen again here.

Oh, I thought about...plenty.

And wrote plenty, too - calling her out for the destructive narcissist she is - while most everyone else was still anointing her as the second coming.

Her shameful, over the top verbage during the primary gave the repubs all the material they needed to go after Barack in the general. It was disgusting - and we shouldn't forget it.

why does it supprise everyone that mccain has decided to use the most ugly issue in the American politics to win an election? mccain voted against martin luther king holiday, he voted against ending aparthide in south africa, he consistently voted against equal pay for equal work and affirmative action. there is no potection bill that passed mccain's litimus test for the benefit of the amarican people. Look, as mccain said, he would rather loss an election than loss a war in iraq. little do people know that mccain's appearance during martin luther king birthday was a means to lay foundation for the final assualt on obama and his race.

mccain will rather destroy america than loss election and this should be his new slogan henceforth.

From the next room, I am overhearing Pat Buchanan sating yet again that people don't "know" Barack Obama. An hour ago, David Gregory was telling his panel the same thing. It seems that whatever Obama says, whatever Obama does, "commentators" like Gregory and Buchanan will continue to tell us we don't know Barack Obama.

This puzzles me. Obama has written two revealing books, has spoken endlessly and eloquently on most of the major issues, and has concealed nothing of his personal or political biography. He is rarely off the TV. Scrutiny of Barack Obama is a national pastime. And yet TV pundits insist, and will continue to insist, that we just don't know who he is.

Puzzling over "who Obama really is" saves them the trouble of scrutinizing John McCain. And as long as nobody knows who John McCain really is, John McCain will win the presidency.

Implicit in both Buchanan and Gregory's words is the secret belief that there is something ominous in Obama's background which has not surfaced. Such sentiments fuel the rationale for those who aren't voting for him because of skin color prejudice to believe that they are justified in not voting for him because eventually he will be found out to be a 'fraud'. Not knowing him infers that he has a hidden character flaw---but the ones with the problem are those whose own reason for not trusting the loads of information that you have cited does exist---gives them political cover to openly question him, even as they have no credible information or data which would verify that some 'unknown' aspect of his past exists.

This is the classic use of 'fear' that has been used so effectively and successfully by the republicans to win elections---they don't have to be called out to explain why they feel Obama has some secret 'unknown' element in his background, they only have to whisper it over and over again to make it valid. Its racism parading as political skepticism.

These are talking points from their corporate masters. They have an agenda and "we don't know him" is the best opening they have. It's code speak meaning because "he doesn't look like the typical Ahmuricuns" (white people), then that means people don't "know" him. It's soft-racism used to drop seeds of doubt and allows for plausible deniability.

Why would we expect more from this man. Did you see him today at the oil rigs in California? I can not believe how he treats his wife. He walks in front of her with no acknowledgment of her as a person, let alone his wife. He is not President yet and still demands she be an obedient wife and walk three steps behind him. Past Presidents have always walked with their wives. How caring the Bush's have always been with their spouse compared to this Senator. So much for the women's movement - now I know why he objected to females in the military. His ideas are just too old fashioned for a progressive Country. This man will set womens rights back 50 years. He should try a knuckle bump sometime - or any sign of outward affection.

She sees herself as first lady, and that would make up for a lot of discourtesy from her husband. I don"t understand why she has put up with such treatment all these years, but maybe she believes the White House will make it all worthwhile. He still hasn't treated her as bad as he did his first wife.

MS media played the "race" card a longtime ago in this election, with their "he isn't one of us spin." There is nothing new here other than he is jumping on board the race baiting bandwagon earlier than the usual race baiting timetable. Oh yeah, he's about to get ugly with it. Just watch and see. He's about to roll out the nasty campaign we have been expecting. No surprises here.

This is an effort to trap Obama into counterpunching. That will be fatal. The answer it to create an Obama ad showing that McCain is not only tied to Bush but to Lee Atwater, Rove, Ailes and so forth. I mean an aggressive ad that is NOT a response. This ad would simply ask if we want to do the same old same old this year. This ad needs to be done soon and shown whenever McCain walks over the line. Since he does so daily, it will need frequent updating but the message should be the same each time. Mccain has made 27s irrelevant by using Big Lies already.

Exactly. The use of 'he isn't one of us' infers that Obama isn't white. Since, it can not infer that he isn't American, which he is, that should eliminate all else. There seems to be a concerted and steady effort by many of these pundits to echo that Obama doesn't connect to 'white folks' or he doesn't share their values or he can't close the deal. The reality is that no Democrat since Jimmy Carter has been able to win a working majority of these blue collar voters, but in depth reporting and context is lost when those parading these narratives are doing so out of an agenda to promote the candidancy of John McCain.

Obama doesnt need to carry a majority of the white vote to win, but he does need to out perform Gore and Kerry by a few percentage points to win the election, the narratives seem to infer that Obama's burden must be to win the majority a obvious strawman argument that is not beared out by the facts, but then again the MSM and its parrots aren't likely to give a fair accounting of the facts when it comes to Obama.

In 2000, John McCain was bashed into primary oblivion by the Republicans' whispering campaign in SC that McCain's adopted daughter was in fact McCain's illegitmate daughter by a black woman. McCain's adopted daughter is brown-skinned because she is from Bangledesh. How he could/would choose to chase race in this campaign tells you the guy is testing the gutter politics route.

As a Californian who suffered through Ward Connerly's ambitious effort to turn back any semblance of educational equity, I find it a huge howl that Mr. Connerly or the author took the time to identify Mr. Connerly as one quarter black. Not even Shelby Steele and Tom Sowell are willing to do that dance. As a person of color, I am well aware that the genetic makeup of bi-racial children can offer up the appearance of an obvious white person, obvious black person or any shade in between.

I am sure Mr. Ward is in pergatory because he does look like a black man...though I doubt he would cop to that. I think he thinks he looks 1/4th black. I am having a John Stewart moment.
