LONDON — Amy Winehouse was released from a London hospital Tuesday after an overnight stay to treat what her spokesman said was an adverse reaction to medication.

The 24-year-old singer-songwriter was discharged from London's University College after spending the night in observation, said spokesman Chris Goodman.

Winehouse was rushed to the hospital's emergency room by ambulance from her north London home Monday night. Goodman said the medication had been taken at her home, but did not provide further details.

"She had a bit of a scare yesterday because of a reaction to treatment. She was kept in overnight purely for observation," Goodman said in a statement. "Amy is at home now after leaving with her father and manager. She is having a rest."

Winehouse, who won Grammy Awards and global acclaim for her 2006 album, "Back to Black," was admitted to a London clinic in June after collapsing at home. Her father, Mitch Winehouse, said at the time she had developed early stage emphysema from smoking cigarettes and crack cocaine.

But the troubled singer was released to perform at celebrations for former South African President Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday in London's Hyde Park and for Britain's Glastonbury music festival.

In addition to her health woes, Winehouse has had several run-ins with police in recent months.

She was investigated by police after a tabloid newspaper published a video that appeared to show her smoking crack cocaine. She was not charged.

Police also cautioned Winehouse in April for assault after she slapped a man during a night out.

If she needs work, I hear George Romero needs a female lead for his next zombie movie.

Yeah I supposed smoking crack, weed, and taking prescription meds might mess your body up.

Some of these comments are really harsh; maybe justified, I dunno. But I took the opportunity to watch a hour of her on MTV17 (or something) last week, and I've seen her on Tonight and a couple of other places, and I find myself wondering why she's so well-regarded musically. She's got a pretty amazing voice, in terms of tonal quality and range, but in terms of its expressiveness, in terms of her stage presence, I don't see anything special. I feel neither her pain (Janis) nor her anger (Courtney).

Reminds me of someone's (Geothe?) description of Wagner: "I once knew a man who was an Ear; the greatest ear in all of Europe, but no more than an ear." Amy Winehouse is a voice. A terrific voice, but, it seems, not much more.

(That quote may be BS, I can't seem to find a citation, but nonetheless...)

Amy Winehouse reminds me so much of Whitney Houston. A great voice, but a complete train wreck; someone who just can't hold on to fame and talent, but throws it all away.

Ah, but Houston was attractive and she could act a little. Also, her body wasn't bad. Winehouse has none of those qualities.

One of the biggest talents to come along in a long time. Having said that....the poor girl is a great big ol' mess. Too bad. I hope she lives long enough to meet her potential.

Poor girl? I love how people who make conscious efforts to smoke crack and willfully won't go to rehab to straighten their lives out become poor people to pity.

Wow. Our tour is supposed to visit the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Covent Gardens. Looks like now, we'll have to park the tour bus outside London University Hospital. I wish she would make up her mind!

Wow, I'm very glad there were no blogs when Ms. Joplin was in her downward spiral.

Please don't compare Joplin to Winehouse. Joplin had soul Winehouse has something else entirely. On top of that Joplin didn't smoke crack until her brain oozed out her ears.

AW is more jazzy. Joplin was blues. Crack didn't exist in the '60s. Janis liked heroin.

I've grown weary. This is no longer "news" to me because it's "routine". Yes, she has a phenomenal sound and it''s sad that her long spiral down seems to continue unabated, but this story line has run its' course.

Her 15 minutes from one 'ok' song, would already be over if you stop reporting on her.

This is America. We have millions of our own crackheads to deal with. Please do me a favor, and don't tell me when she O.D.'s

Apparently you've only heard "one song." The girl is extremely talented. I bought the "Back to Black" album and was completely blown away. It's a truly amazing CD from beginning to end! But like many extremely talented people, Amy Winehouse is completely self-destructive. So I won't be shocked if we are soon talking about all the potential that has been wasted and what could have been because she's dead.

She has two excellent albums in a jazz vein, not just one "ok" song. Guess you only know about the poppy "Rehab". Oh, well.
