MediaWeek:

Don Draper may become a household name after all.

The brooding centerpiece of AMC's critically acclaimed original series Mad Men returned to the tube Sunday night to his biggest audience yet, as the season two premiere averaged nearly 2 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research fast nationals data.

The 10 p.m. debut--which also happened to be competing directly with ESPN's coverage of the final installment of a three-game series between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox--more than doubled its first-season average, drawing 1.95 million viewers versus the year-ago 915,000.

I saw the program advertised on the tube
and had a hard time deciding whether or not
I'de watch it or go out to my shop and take a hammer
and hit myself on the thumb as hard as I could.
Needless to say i opted for the hammer.

It's a delicious show, the treat of the week and the best soap since "I, Claudius."

From James Woolcott's Blog: "[Mad Men's] first new episodes are spooning out the same soupy existential miasma with a minimum of forward motion. In the still of the night, not much is happening, and mystique is not enough to patch over every stalemate in the storyline. It's as if series creator Matthew Weiner is stuck in David Chase's [Soprano's creator] driveway and can't figure out how to find his own way out, his fingers clawed around the steering wheel."
I'd have to agree. Mad Men has become turgid and belly-button-gazing boring. All the pieces are there, they just aren't doing anything.

Pretty soon, the net works are going to fall prey to their own garbage and collapse.

This is an excellent show, an example of why cable's original programming is running circles around the four broadcast networks and their "reality" shows. These days you pretty much have to go to cable for quality TV.
