WASHINGTON — Barack Obama told House Democrats on Tuesday that as president he would order his attorney general to scour White House executive orders and expunge any that "trample on liberty," several lawmakers said.

Presidents, as head of the executive branch of government, issue such orders to direct operations of executive branch agencies, like the Justice Department and the CIA. For example, President Bush used an executive order last year to breathe new life into the CIA's controversial terror interrogation program that allowed harsh questioning of suspects.

Obama "talked about how his attorney general is to review every executive order and immediately eliminate those that trample on liberty," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.

"He indicated there would be a review in his administration," said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., the House majority whip.

Obama did not mention executive orders when he addressed reporters who waited for him outside the closed-door meeting. He said only that he would be campaigning alongside members to win the presidency and help expand Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.

"I am looking forward to collaborating with everyone here to win the election, but more importantly to collaborate with everybody here and also some like-minded Republicans to actually govern and to deliver on behalf of the American people," Obama said.

During his presidency, Bush increasingly has relied on executive orders to dictate policies without seeking congressional approval. His orders have ranged from restrictions on striped bass fishing to sanctions against Myanmar's government.

Obama did not indicate who his attorney general would be, or any other member of his Cabinet. To lawmakers who asked about his Cabinet plans, Obama said: "Get me elected, and then I'll worry about the Cabinet," according to Nadler.

Clyburn added that Obama said there were "people in the room with more expertise than him."

Obama's meeting with the House Democratic caucus came hours after he spoke with both Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke about the faltering economy, part of his effort to refocus the campaign on domestic issues after last week's foreign trip.

Obama spokesman Michael Ortiz said the senator and Bernanke discussed the outlook for consumers and businesses, as well as the effect of rising home foreclosures on families nationwide. They also talked about the "strengths of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and other financial institutions," Ortiz said.

Obama called Paulson as he rode to a meeting with Pakistan's new prime minister, the campaign said.

A campaign statement said Obama asked how the Treasury Department planned to use its new authority with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and whether the government had the tools it needs to address the challenges in the banking industry. As part of the government's effort to provide mortgage relief to hundreds of thousands of homeowners, Paulson has sought emergency power to rescue lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Congress approved a housing plan last week that would provide relief for 400,000 homeowners who can't afford their payments by allowing them to refinance their mortgages with more affordable, government-backed loans. President Bush has promised to sign the package into law.

In a day of meetings, Obama also met with Pakistan's new leader, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

At a fundraising luncheon, he said he told Gilani "the only way we're going to be successful in the long term in defeating extremists ... is if we are giving people opportunities. If people have a chance for a better life, then they are not as likely to turn to the ideologies of violence and despair."

Do you think after meeting with these men, O is going to make a statement about how he want to improve the economy?
He canot just have meetings. The American public wants to know what his plans are.

Since when is being intelligent, talented and impressive a bad thing in a potential president? Frankly, I'd like my president to be able to watch TV and eat pretzels at the same time without choking.

Would we ever elect someone to the office who was not self-confident? I don't mind a little bit of arrogance when someone is truly capable. I do resent arrogance when it comes from a cowboy who is all hat or a former POW who believes this entitles him to the presidency and makes him immune from any criticism of his qualifications for the office.

Senator Obama needs to read "The Creature from Jekyll Island" and "What the Government Has Done to Our Money". He is wasting time hobnobbing with the very agents of the looming depression. All they can offer is more of the same, intervention in an already over-regulated economy. What he needs to cultivate is a real understanding of the monstrous monetary system that Congress saddled us with in 1913. This is the system that has managed to destroy the dollar while funding every war of the 20th and now the 21st Century. This is the system that allows a privileged elite to make indentured servants of the rest of the world! No politician I know of, other than the statesman Ron Paul whom everyone is hell-bent on minimizing, understands the scam that has been foisted on the sheep....but only pain causes us to change course, and we are in for an excruciating episode which will call forth all manner of "rough beasts slouching their way toward Bethlehem." And for the tattered American republic the rough beasts in this case are the most recent incarnations of Homo politicus.

I am currently reading the book and I have found it unphuckingbelievable and that congress would vote for this bull$hit and a president would pass this bill and not veto it.Thes creatures were as greedy as these guys today who are despicible human beingsand don`t give a damn about this country that they are destroying.I do hope Obama will not have Robert Rubin on his staff if he wins because Rubin and grenspan helped Clinton cahnge his economic policy and gave him some $hit advice on NAFTA which is aa peave of mine and the rest of this country`s.I would like to see him get rid of the Fed and start work on a 21st century New Deal to get people back to work and put us back on the map of industrialized nations and use Germay`s model for wind and solar energy.

This is what you do when you need to get a grip on heavy responsibility you are about to assume. Sure it may seem presumptuous. I'll take that for a leader that will get it done. Rather than some old crackpot doing photo ops in front of oil rigs looking for the slimmest of angles to break his competition down.
If you work in "corporate America" you know who the good managers are and the jerk offs. Just apply this to your own lives. Who would you rather work for? Easy choice for me. But then again. I didn't vote for BBQ and a redneck trying to compensate for daddy issues.

Obama is "questioning the bailout of the shareholders and management but not the borrowers" of Freddie and Fannie. He needs to learn to "go along to get along." Stepping on the toes of big money is unacceptable. We have a political democracy, not an economic democracy. Money to the financiers who control our country is not the only thing - it's everything.

In so far as "defeating extremists" goes, what is an "extremist?" Do right wing ideologues count as "extremists?" Those who wish to undue the constitution of our country are extremists. The further right you go the more "extreme" your are.

We should go on a case-by-case basis, not just lump people and entire countries into a false dichotomy of "good and evil." Such cognitive distortions are unacceptable to guide or defense and foreign policy. Those "evil-doer" out there. What does that mean analytically?

Not all republicans can be so stupid to march lock step over the cliff. We cannot stand another four years of wreckless abandon. Welcome.

Is it me or is the Sen from Illinois taking this POTUS thing seriously? As compared to McCain who seems content to just attack Obama and not care to do any planning, JUST IN CASE HE DOES BECOME POTUS!

"Rescuing" Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is very likely to drown the rest of us in debt and seriously Devalue The Dollar, making EVERYTHING more expensive - and maybe evening souring our T-bills for the Chinese...

If you read the 800+ bill, you'll see that there are NO CAPS, ABSOLUTELY NO LIMITS on the liability to the US Taxpayer AND the spigot is opened wide. Further, there's a $3B - yes BILLION - dollar give-away, obstensibly for states to buy forclosed houses, but what will the states then do with them? Yes, SELL THEM back to the housing industry! - There's NO requirement that they be resold directly to the public for a discount, etc, etc, so many local governments that are already in the pockets of developers are going to help those developers get even richer.

Get educated and TELL YOUR CONGRESS-CREATURE TO VOTE NO ON THE BAILOUT!

Senator Obama is meeting with the right people at this point in the campaign.

However, the deathgrip on our nation by the current maladministration and control of the MSM never ceases to amaze. I doubt Senator Obama knows about this item.

There is a draft resolution in the UN which contains the wording "the categorization of countries as good or evil based on unilateral and unjustified criteria" — a flat indictment of Bush/Cheney labeling Iran as part of an "axis of evil" along with Saddam' s Iraq and North Korea.

What "Axis of Evil?" They lie and innocents die. The U.S. ought to step up and actually support resolutions which includes this wording.

The real "Axis of Evil" is Bush-Paulson, print it - privatize the profits - push the risk and bailouts onto middle America.

I am glad Obama is meeting with the Prime Minister of Pakistan. He should take the opportunity to familiarize himself with all leaders. Meeting here on US soil? I am sure that Mc will have "something to say" about that or someone will accuse Obama of being "arrogant". Mc has the same opportunity; will he take it? No, he will put out some kind of Negative Ad against Obama.
