Washington Post reporters Dana Milbank and Jonathan Weisman gave the McCain campaign a nipple-stiffening moment today after they picked up a statement by Barack Obama, and used it, apparently, entirely out of context, presenting it for the consumption of Post readers in a way that made it look like Obama was being arrogant.

For Milbank's part, it was all because he wanted to wedge the statement into his preferred frame: "Barack Obama has long been his party's presumptive nominee. Now he's becoming its presumptuous nominee." I believe it was Oscar Wilde who cautioned: "Reality is a MADE thing."

And, as it turns out, Milbank's "reality" is something of a deconstruction. Milbank's remake reads:

"This is the moment . . . that the world is waiting for," adding: "I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions."

According to a Democratic leadership aide in attendance, the full quote from Obama is:

It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions.

(For what it's worth, before Milbank's column was published, we received a separate eye-witness account of Obama's meeting with House Dems that mirrored the full context quote above.)

So, in actuality, Obama was attempting to diminish his own importance, not place himself on a pedestal. It was an attempt at humility, not arrogance.

And speaking of arrogance, really - Milbank is a fine one to be speaking on the subject. Via Wonkette, we present to you this video of a slurring Milbank, pompously declaring, "I will not read blogs, I'm sorry...If something is important enough, it will be brought to my attention."

Which is just the sort of toxic nonsense you get from the high-toned clique of anointed political reporters these days, I'm afraid. Naturally, the difference between Milbank and the blogs he won't read (he's sorry!), is that Milbank is wrong.

And that's not all he gets wrong. Over the course of the article, Milbank - desperately panting - attempts to make the case that foreign travels, adherence to Capitol Hill protocol, Secret Service protection, and meeting with Cabinet officials and foreign dignitaries are all signs of "pride" and "presumptuousness," when in reality, these are the simple, entirely protean tasks that any Presidential candidate performs. McCain has done all of those things. Milbank would have a case were he to bring up the stupid "Presidential seal" the Obama campaign briefly deployed before realizing how asinine a gesture it was (and, as Ben Smith points out, the McCain campaign is no stranger to similarly inane gestures), but Milbank would rather fill his readers' heads with misleading pastry where commonplace activities take on some sort of diabolical dimension.

Worse yet, is this part of the case Milbank builds against Obama:

The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder reported last week that Obama has directed his staff to begin planning for his transition to the White House, causing Republicans to howl about premature drape measuring.

But, once again, planning for the transition in July is not something Obama is doing out of presumptuousness, he's doing it because that is what presidential nominees are supposed to do. In the summer of 2000, both George W. Bush and Al Gore did the exact same thing.

The Washington Post is located at 1150 15th Street, NW in Washington, DC, for all those interested in hand-delivering the news to Milbank, so that important things are brought to his precious and presumptuous attention.

There doesn't seem to be much interest in "facts." Despite the fact that the WP Obama quote is not accurate, people will somehow manage to continue referring to it as if it was. Throw as much crap as you can and some of it's bound to stick.

The only thing that they understand is money, so I spoke with my pocketbook and cancelled my subscription. When they asked my why, I told them two words. Dana Milbank.

Maybe, if all the major news organizations pool their money and start offering large cash rewards for demonstrable critical thinking by their columnists and reporters...

Hey, c'mon guys! Dana's just doing his job. After all, if they don't keep it looking like a horse race, it won't be good for ratings...

Millbank's quote was word for word. It was not taken out of context.

Yeah, word for word... just not all of them.

Quick! Pass it along to Rick Davis and Steve Schmidt... oughta be good for another day or two of feigned, overwrought outrage while McSurly tries to work out the basics of a discernible campaign.

This story is just another example of the media attempting to make the presidential race closer than it is. CBS doctored their quotes and now the Washington Post in favor of Mccain as well. The reason Obama seems so presumptive is because everyone unconsciously knows that Mccain is one of the weakest candidates the Republicans have ever had. Even the Republicans know it. But for now, the media will do its job making mountains out of mole hills and trying to convince us of stories they've concocted themselves.

Millbank applied a demeanor which wasn't the case, if you looked at what he said prior to the quote.

Full Quote:

"It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions."

("is not about me at all.") So there goes Milbank story entire premise of his story. Perhaps he only tuned into the cliff notes version of his speech?

Sounds to me like Dana was tipsy and let us know someone else provides him with his talking points and he has no nose for investigating. He'd rather regurgitate whatever lends itself to propping up his own phony dogmas.Whatever happened to serious journalism and why are there so many journalists with agendas? Is it a money thing? Now the humorous part. When it finally sunk in that he might be getting taped ,his facial expression looked like he was doing a rewind in his head and he wasn't too happy with the vocalizations rattling around in his skull.

Dana is not the only journalist that has shown his true colors. The bottomline is that most of the commentaters on MSNBC, CNN, etc were not supporting Obama they were against Hillary, now that Obama is the nominee, their true colors are being seen. Howard Fineman is another person that needs to be watched, even Keith O, to some degree. Most of these people got on the tube because they hated Hillary, it didn't mean that they were democratics. I think 99.9 percent of them are Rebuggs!!

True. The enemy of my enemy is my friend?
But, as for Keith O., he just calls it the way he see it. The reason he appears to be on O's side is that 99% of the time, the criticism truly belongs on the other side. It's not to say that O is perfect, but compared to McBush, O can do no wrong. The rest of the more moderate Media, excepting a few, just want to play the equalizer, to keep the game interesting and lasting.

Give me a break,Olberman was clearly for protecting the probable demacratic nominee Hillary from serious damage, until it became apparent after TX and Ohio that she couldnt catch him and he became annoyed when she was damaging the new likely democratic nominee. He's was going to be biased for whoever won the nomination and who can blame him for wanting to send whoever the Democrat was going to be into the general with a minimum of damage inflicted by our own side.

Here we go - misquotes and half truths that become bigger than the ideas. We should be familiar with all the dirty tricks having seen them trotted out against Al Gore and John Kerry. Brace yourselves. It is just beginning.
It is important to call them on it EVERY time. In bold headlines. We can not let them get away with it!
They should insist that the Washington Post publish the entire quote, in a box on the front page, with an apology!

Why doesn't any of the news media report that there were two concerts in Berlin prior to Obama's speech, one being a very popular rock group? Let me answer that for you. They want all the Obama minions to think everyone came to hear him speak. Not the case.

Nobody kept those crowds there after the concert. The could have left if they'd wanted to. The obviously didn't want to.

I have watched Milbank on Olbermann many times and he comes off as smug and oftontimes
tries to be humorous by turning on Keith's simple questions to him. Seldom does he provide any worthwhile information which I presume is the reason Olbermann has him on. This latest confirms my earlier views of him. He is David Broder light. Surely Kieth can find someone that can enlighten his audience concerning the beltway scene.
