Washington Post reporters Dana Milbank and Jonathan Weisman gave the McCain campaign a nipple-stiffening moment today after they picked up a statement by Barack Obama, and used it, apparently, entirely out of context, presenting it for the consumption of Post readers in a way that made it look like Obama was being arrogant.

For Milbank's part, it was all because he wanted to wedge the statement into his preferred frame: "Barack Obama has long been his party's presumptive nominee. Now he's becoming its presumptuous nominee." I believe it was Oscar Wilde who cautioned: "Reality is a MADE thing."

And, as it turns out, Milbank's "reality" is something of a deconstruction. Milbank's remake reads:

"This is the moment . . . that the world is waiting for," adding: "I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions."

According to a Democratic leadership aide in attendance, the full quote from Obama is:

It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions.

(For what it's worth, before Milbank's column was published, we received a separate eye-witness account of Obama's meeting with House Dems that mirrored the full context quote above.)

So, in actuality, Obama was attempting to diminish his own importance, not place himself on a pedestal. It was an attempt at humility, not arrogance.

And speaking of arrogance, really - Milbank is a fine one to be speaking on the subject. Via Wonkette, we present to you this video of a slurring Milbank, pompously declaring, "I will not read blogs, I'm sorry...If something is important enough, it will be brought to my attention."

Story continues below

Which is just the sort of toxic nonsense you get from the high-toned clique of anointed political reporters these days, I'm afraid. Naturally, the difference between Milbank and the blogs he won't read (he's sorry!), is that Milbank is wrong.

And that's not all he gets wrong. Over the course of the article, Milbank - desperately panting - attempts to make the case that foreign travels, adherence to Capitol Hill protocol, Secret Service protection, and meeting with Cabinet officials and foreign dignitaries are all signs of "pride" and "presumptuousness," when in reality, these are the simple, entirely protean tasks that any Presidential candidate performs. McCain has done all of those things. Milbank would have a case were he to bring up the stupid "Presidential seal" the Obama campaign briefly deployed before realizing how asinine a gesture it was (and, as Ben Smith points out, the McCain campaign is no stranger to similarly inane gestures), but Milbank would rather fill his readers' heads with misleading pastry where commonplace activities take on some sort of diabolical dimension.

Worse yet, is this part of the case Milbank builds against Obama:

The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder reported last week that Obama has directed his staff to begin planning for his transition to the White House, causing Republicans to howl about premature drape measuring.

But, once again, planning for the transition in July is not something Obama is doing out of presumptuousness, he's doing it because that is what presidential nominees are supposed to do. In the summer of 2000, both George W. Bush and Al Gore did the exact same thing.

The Washington Post is located at 1150 15th Street, NW in Washington, DC, for all those interested in hand-delivering the news to Milbank, so that important things are brought to his precious and presumptuous attention.

Washington Post reporters Dana Milbank and Jonathan Weisman gave the McCain campaign a nipple-stiffening moment today after they picked up a statement by Barack Obama, and used it, apparently, entirel...

I was surprised that Keith Olbermann did not have Dana Milbank on his show last night (Wed.). If there were one place that Milbank could explain himself, it would be with Olberman. I don't think that the story came up. I hope there will be an apology by Milbank. His comments, especially with the inaccurate quote, were not above board, so I hope he will apologize and admit that he did something unprofessional.

Better yet, KO should make Milbank one of his Worst Persons. But, with Milbank being an official MSNBC analyst, I'm sure that could never happen.

I agree, to be fair he has to get on Milbank about this. And I will wait [but not bet the rent on] a published correction by the WP. In a prominent place, not a one inch box on page 17. I wondered if it was significant that KO did NOT have Milbank on the show last night? We had Craig Crawford, whom we haven't seen in some time. But still, KO needs to do more than just banish Milbank for a week or two. He has lost credibility as an analyst, IMO. He needs to get his cred back, unless his lack of cred doesn't matter to him. Which would be a whole 'nother story.

Think about it, if you were a man and grew up with the name "Dana" wouldn't you be an oily prick too?

Media Distorts for McCain - AGAIN
Steve Benen at The Carpetbagger Report (TCBR) had an interesting post today about how the Washington Post ran an article, by Jonathan Weisman, who reports that during a closed door meeting, Barack Obama said "I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions." This was “according to a witness.” The media, along with the GOP, are pushing the “presumptuous” and “arrogant” memes, for all they are worth, onto Obama with all their might.
Unfortunately, and especially in this case, a half truth is a blatant lie.
A Democratic leadership aide — who, unlike the media, was in the room during Obama’s remarks — has been emailing reporters this morning:
“His entire point of that riff was that the campaign IS NOT about him. The Post left out the important first half of the sentence, which was something along the lines of: ‘It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It’s about America. I have just become a symbol….”
In other words, this wasn’t an example of Obama being “arrogant” or “presumptuous”; it’s an example of humility. He was saying all of this excitement isn’t about him personally, because he’s just a symbol of something larger.

details, details, why should the smear merchants care about these pesky details? The WP is getting pretty blatant about this, tho, what happened to newspapers' veracity? Oh, I must be living in another century, sorry... I suspect Katherine Graham is rolling over at what has been done to her once-great newspaper.

I don't think his skin color has anything to do with it. They (repubes) said the same thing about John Kerry. It's the total "dumbing down" of our society. Anyone who is well-spoken, well traveled, and/or highly educated is looked at with suspicion by Joe Sixpack and his little sixpackers.

Dana Milbank always seems a bit arrogant when he appears on Countdown, almost like he's slumming or something.

Now, Keith Olbermann is certainly arrogant too, but [1] that's pretty much the point on a show like Countdown, and [2] it's Keith's show.

It's time for Mr Olbermann to step up to the plate. Although I admire him immensely, he had no difficulty holding Senator Obama's feet to the fire on his FISA vote.

Now Mr Milbank needs to be brought down a couple of notches.

MSM is just corporate ideology aimed at tweaking your grey matter into buying candy bars and wars.

Well, wait till he wins in Nov. hope ya all don't mind him dancing a little jig in celebration throwing a few "fist-bump" with friends and family won't be too uppity for ya, will it. I'm really starting to distain certain pockets of this country to include certain political parties and religions.

Go ahead, Sen. Obama party hardy 'cause we know the "white boys" would if they were in your place you deserve to be happy and enjoy your success and I for one am happy for you.

Now I'm convinced ... I am "so" done with newspapers. (another small contribution to cutting back on my carbon footprint ... except ... they are good for lining the bird cage with.)

check and see if you can pick up the "over runs" from your local paper. Though I wouldn't recommend the "lining the bird cage" part. A friend of mine does that to get paper for her paper trained dog.

Try lining your birdcage with the hundreds of free newspapers they throw in your driveway. Works just as well. Boycott the papers!

Expect more of this trash and from more people than MiIbank. For there is nothing that will hurt a candidate---any candidate---more than the perception that he or she is arrogant. It doesn't have to be true, but only believed to be true. Policies won't hurt O, not fatally, anyway, but this will---if it sticks.

Dear FlyingEagel, The Washington Post certainly was not bought by Rupert Murdoch. It is a proud local institution privately held by the Graham family. Its independence was what made it possible to pursue and report the Watergate scandal. It continues to be as independent today. I don't agree with everything it publishes, but don't make up stories about some random billionaire owning it.

the WP was a sinking rag when Katherine Graham's husband ran it; when he died she took over, with no publishing experience. Maybe that was her saving grace, she didn't know what she was "supposed to" do. She just did what was right. Under her son Donald it has leaned increasingly pro-business and righty, and now his daughter is taking over much of it and letting go some longtime columnists. Chasing that youth demo when the youth demo no longer reads actual paper newspapers. I have no doubt the quality will sink even lower. Donald returned it to the cachet it had when his father ran it. It's still living on the laurels laid down for his mother's stewardship. I could not imagine any of them showing the courage today that Katherine Graham showed in running the Watergate mess and standing up to threats by the President. The WP is half the paper it once was. Eugene Robinson and 3 pages of funnies are the best thing about it now.

Milbank suffers from an ego not in proportion to his ability or achievement. He clearly has taken some personal umbrage at Barack Obama and has decided that litle old HE, Dana Milbank, is going to cut Obama down to his size, Milbank-size, that is rodent-sized.

Milbank is not just a bad self-inserting journalist, he is a bad lazy journalist. Too lazy to check to see when candidates normally ready their transition plans...That was an easy gimme, if he really wanted to write a fair article.

Milbank = the best journalist the Washington Post has to offer. Ah, how the once mighty have fallen.
