Washington Post reporters Dana Milbank and Jonathan Weisman gave the McCain campaign a nipple-stiffening moment today after they picked up a statement by Barack Obama, and used it, apparently, entirely out of context, presenting it for the consumption of Post readers in a way that made it look like Obama was being arrogant.

For Milbank's part, it was all because he wanted to wedge the statement into his preferred frame: "Barack Obama has long been his party's presumptive nominee. Now he's becoming its presumptuous nominee." I believe it was Oscar Wilde who cautioned: "Reality is a MADE thing."

And, as it turns out, Milbank's "reality" is something of a deconstruction. Milbank's remake reads:

"This is the moment . . . that the world is waiting for," adding: "I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions."

According to a Democratic leadership aide in attendance, the full quote from Obama is:

It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions.

(For what it's worth, before Milbank's column was published, we received a separate eye-witness account of Obama's meeting with House Dems that mirrored the full context quote above.)

So, in actuality, Obama was attempting to diminish his own importance, not place himself on a pedestal. It was an attempt at humility, not arrogance.

And speaking of arrogance, really - Milbank is a fine one to be speaking on the subject. Via Wonkette, we present to you this video of a slurring Milbank, pompously declaring, "I will not read blogs, I'm sorry...If something is important enough, it will be brought to my attention."

Story continues below

Which is just the sort of toxic nonsense you get from the high-toned clique of anointed political reporters these days, I'm afraid. Naturally, the difference between Milbank and the blogs he won't read (he's sorry!), is that Milbank is wrong.

And that's not all he gets wrong. Over the course of the article, Milbank - desperately panting - attempts to make the case that foreign travels, adherence to Capitol Hill protocol, Secret Service protection, and meeting with Cabinet officials and foreign dignitaries are all signs of "pride" and "presumptuousness," when in reality, these are the simple, entirely protean tasks that any Presidential candidate performs. McCain has done all of those things. Milbank would have a case were he to bring up the stupid "Presidential seal" the Obama campaign briefly deployed before realizing how asinine a gesture it was (and, as Ben Smith points out, the McCain campaign is no stranger to similarly inane gestures), but Milbank would rather fill his readers' heads with misleading pastry where commonplace activities take on some sort of diabolical dimension.

Worse yet, is this part of the case Milbank builds against Obama:

The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder reported last week that Obama has directed his staff to begin planning for his transition to the White House, causing Republicans to howl about premature drape measuring.

But, once again, planning for the transition in July is not something Obama is doing out of presumptuousness, he's doing it because that is what presidential nominees are supposed to do. In the summer of 2000, both George W. Bush and Al Gore did the exact same thing.

The Washington Post is located at 1150 15th Street, NW in Washington, DC, for all those interested in hand-delivering the news to Milbank, so that important things are brought to his precious and presumptuous attention.

I left a comment on Wash Post, although I don't think it'll do much. But I do think this plays into a post the other day with the media trying to shape this narrative of Obama. It's a damned if you do or don't scenario. If he looks too presidential he presumptuos, if he doesn't he's not fit to be president.

Obama needs to shape Obama's narrative, not Dana Milbank. I understand that it's Dana Milbank's schitck to be witty and clever, but not at the expense of parsing someone's words to shape your story. That's just sloppy and lazy journalism.

I'm sure that Keith Olbermann gave Dana Milbank an earful over the phone!! And I'm also pretty sure that tomorrow there will be a big fact retraction in the Wash Post.

Dana Milbank. When he says something, you seriously have to CTS: Consider The Source. He isn't a good journalist in my opinion.

What Obama should do to counter all of that is to do the same thing that Olbermann does. Dissect it, expose it, blast it, counter it, keep it moving forward.

The Fraud will be exposed for who and what he is in the debates where he can't run and hide.

Dana, may I remind you that KNOWLEDGE is power! Obama is knowledgable/smart and confident--not arrogant! It's a dam if you do and dam if you don't. If Obama was short on knowledge/judgment he would be critized and blown out of the race for the White House. On the other hand, when he demonstrates his mastery of the English language, use of sound judgment, the dept of his knowledge about matters of concern to the American people and his vision for the future of our country, he is labled as arrogant, presumptive, uppity, et al lables. WHEN WILL THE PLAYING FIEILD BECOME LEVEL?!!!

The Right Wing media is effectively chopping down Barrack Obama just like Gore and Kerry. Unless Barrack's campaign has a ferocious rapid response team, I fear those old stuffy lying ass Republicans will win again. Obama needs an organized team of political commandoes able to thwart off the Republican Attack Machine. This is where Hillary might have done better. She had savvy when it came to handling dirty Republican. She could fight back. Can Barrack?

Interestingly, once again according to those dastardly polls, McCain's "chopping down Obama" is only working to backfire on McCain. The more McCain tries to chop Obama down with silly and misleading ads and scripted talking points, the more the clear contrast between the integrity and decency of Obama's campaign and the childish sliminess of McCain's campaign is made evident. At present, the electorate believes that Obama is no more arrogant or presumptuous than McCain, and that McCain has conducted the most negative of the two campaigns.

It's also become clear that all McCain and the GOP have to attack Senator Obama with are what are now old and over-played looped soundbites and his race - trying to convince the electorate that this black man does not know his place and to paint him as arrogant, presumptuous and uppity. But had Hillary been the nominee, the barrage of assaults against her would have been unending, and they also would have been much more credible. Senator Obama doesn't have to fight lies, because lies are eventually exposed for what they are, as McCain is finding out; whereas Hillary would have been fighting truth, a much harder battle to win.

And the visual comparisons in the same ads don't help McCain either, even though he is using photos from a LONG time ago.

It was interesting to me how many times Mika warned Joe this morning about needing the context of the quote before commenting on it. I wonder if that jacka$$ will apologize tomorrow.

Apologize? If he apologized every time he took something out of context, or exaggerated outrageously, or told an out-and-out lie, he'd have to expand his show by an hour.

Dana, Dana, one of my favorite and interesting journalist on Cable News stints. This article was a "foul-up of facts " big time.

Oscar Wilde also wrote: "Modern journalists . . . always apologize to one in private for what they have written against one in public."

You owe Obama one. McCain has him hanging with Britney and Paris.

Olbermann didn't even mention it. I cannot believe he let this slip by because Millbank is a friend.
So now we know that Keith Olbermann's outrage is selective when his friends are professionally irresponsible and blatantly the "Worst Person in the World"!
How long before the Millbank quote is in a McCain ad and picked up by every "low information voter"?

I didn't even bother to read the dreck. I don't really blame Milbank; he was just being "cute." It is all part of a pattern at the newspaper, however. The Post seems determined to make sure Obama is not elected.

It isn't conservative or Republican like at Fox News...

The Neocon agenda there seems to becoming more important than anything else...so sad...

Perhaps the reality of Obama's chances of winning the election is setting in! Don't forget most of the pundints underestimated Obama's strength/abilities when he elected to run for President.
