Katie Couric The View

Katie Couric appeared on "The View" Wednesday morning and reiterated her position that she has "no plans" to leave CBS News after the election — and she revealed an interesting strategy for coping with bad press: turning to Sex and the City.

"I'm enjoying what I'm doing now," Couric told the ladies. "I really like the people I'm working with."

When pressed on whether she would stay through the end of her contract (which expires in 2011), Couric said, "We'll see. You know. We'll see. You have to constantly assess the situation. I'm enjoying it. I think our show is really strong. We just won an Edward R. Murrow award for best newscast."

Couric then explained how she has dealt with the negative press surrounding her possible departure and her broadcast's sluggish ratings — specifically how she handles that with her daughters (Carrie, 12, and Ellie, 17):

Carrie once said, when I was kind of bummed out about something somebody had written that was really nasty and had nothing do do with my abilities or my journalistic abilities...she said, "Mom, remember what Samantha said in Sex and the City: If I listened to what every bitch in New York City said about me, I'd never leave the house."

Previously: Katie Couric admits, "I'm a pathetic fan... I go to HBO on Demand, go to Sex and the City, and I watch each episode 20 times."

I find it interesting that Ms. Couric tunes out all that 'noise' by watching something else. I wonder if she's indirectly asking her viewers to tune her out ('cause heaven knows she's got nothing journalistic to say).

And what is your definition of something "journalist" to say? How long have you been in broadcasting? She reports the news the same way the other anchors do. She's not sitting there with pom pons, chewing gum and drinking cherry coke.

Probably longer than you've been around. And next time you try to quote someone, make sure you do it right.

She is a stoopid one too. She hauls home millions of dollars for sitting on the screen, smiling and parroting biased nonsense fed to up by rabid ideologues.

I have read a few of your posts MPeter and I wouldn't nominate YOU for a MENSA membership any time soon. Katie may not be Stephen Hawking, but she does a good job. And if you don't like the "nonsense fed to her by rabid idealogues", you should talk to the Obama people personally.

What she did wasn't a screw-up or a mess up...you don't "screw up" and edit a video so that a subject answers a question with the answer from a different question in order to obviously make that subject look better. That right there is enough for Edward R. Murrow to start thrashing around in his grave. And last I checked, I think he was, and I thought I heard some cursing as well. Give him a few hours, and he might dig his way out. Better be careful how often you invoke his name these days, Katie...

Why Heavy? Because she is advocating pedophilia as an alternative lifestyle? Is she telling children to kill other children? Does she laugh at stories about people dying from cancer, aids, alzheimer's, etc? Or maybe it's because she doesn't know her place. Do ya think that might be it? Because I would bet serious cash, if I had any, on that.

As I'm sure everyone knows, lol, I'm picky about anything and anyone. I'm worse than Morris the Cat sometimes.

But I find it odd, that I'm apparently the only person in Amerika that doesn't hate Katie Couric. I mean, with so many people apparently loving Ann Coulter on here, and with all she's said and done to degrade the people who like her. What has Katie ever done??

Who would you rather be telling us the news in the evening, Katie Couric, Ann Coulter or Rush Limpbaugh??

I'll take Katie over those 2 any day of the week.

I didn't hate her until she started defending herself after cutting that interview up with McCain where they literally tried to make McCain look better by changing his answers around. You don't defend that sort of stuff.

As it were, neither Ann Coulter nor Rush Limbaugh have prime time news shows and even if they did, everyone would know they were opinion pieces. People watching Couric's show were deceived into thinking they were seeing a real interview, when in reality, it was just a propaganda bit. These are going to mainly be people have to decide who they want to vote for. If they weren't interested at all in voting for McCain, they wouldn't have even bothered watching the piece unless they were going to blog about it.

None of the above - they are all so entrenched with one side or the other they have no business saying anything to the public.

None of them can report anything without undermining the truth.

To give you an idea of how bad things could really be if people drummed out just any journalist they didn't care for on the evening news. Eventually we'll get stuck with Coulter's and Limpbaugh's and the right-wing movement would ensure there would be threats to the networks if they tried to get rid of either one. ;) Hence, we'd be sitting here 2 years from now, wishing we had Katie Couric back.

Kinda like how we're sitting here wishing Fox was just a golden age movie company, instead of a propaganda network.

I agree with you. I'm not a fan of Couric's comments on The View (I hate the term "bitch"), but I don't think she's that bad. I'm certainly not going to try to shut her up or insult her. I may not watch her program (don't like TV news), but I'm not going to judge or condemn or attempt to silence her. I mean, I'm not a fan, but I'm not about to defame her. She can exist and do her job, I can exist and do mine.

That sounds reasonable, lol. And I don't expect everyone to like her, but at least they could come up with some excuse that makes sense. You gave valid excuses about her using language you didn't like, and that you didn't like watching the tv news. Yet you sounded open minded about her. So that's cool.

I just hate the incessant criticism I see even here on HuffPo. If CBS's ratings are down, they run out a big huge front page story about how it's Katie Couric's fault. Or if a bank fails in Nevada, and Kate reports on it, it must be her fault. Or that she's trying to protect someone.

Sure, I didn't mind them calling her out on the differences in the interviews she did with Obama and McCain. But Katie doesn't have free reign to make edits, or not. That's her bosses that are carving up her broadcast to suit their interests. And all I'm saying is, when the ran that story, they should have pointed out it was her bosses that made the edits, not her. They left her dangling and taking the blame. ;)

I'll give her props as a morning show anchor but how in the world can she expect to be taken as a serious journalist with comments like these? sheesh.

Thanks Katie - you care nothing about what your viewers think. Your willingness to engage in political hypocricy (sp) says a lot about your character. Editing and substituting McCain's answers to question during your recent interview leads me to conclude that getting rid of Rather was a big mistake. Oh well CBS evening news will not be on my schedule in the future.

If CBS was smart they'd be looking to get rid of her. That coverage last week was awful - it was her interview that got re-edited in order to make Mc.Cain look good.

The last time i checked, CBS was dead last as far as network news time slot goes, so ,I kind of think that she will get her walking papers real soon!

And Edward R. Murrow is spinning in his grave. After that cut-and-paste stunt, she should be required to give "her "award back out of respect for what CBS News once was.

It isn't just every "wife in New York City" complaining that she had her crack team doctor up her own interview with John McCain, crossing right smack dab into the realm of yellow journalism. This isn't a "screw up" or a "mess up". You don't cut up a video segment and move answers around without knowing exactly what you're doing and doing it for a reason. These things aren't filmed like movies in little cut segments, they sit down and the cameras roll. If what comes out in the final cut is so different that a subject's answers have been replaced with other answers, that's intentional.

Oh yeah, and about that Edward Murrow award...Edward R. Murrow is definitely rolling in his grave right now. I checked...yeah, he's still thrashing about, and I think I can hear him cursing Katie Couric's name. Give him a few more hours, he might dig his way up and head on over to Ms. Couric's studio.

I would say "you said it sista.", but then I remember who we're talking about. She's nothing but a parody of what journalism has become. Unfortunately, they're representing that parody as the real thing.

Why should she care? She has a contract for 15 Million Dollar,if she messes up or not. It is like the CEOs who rake in millions and run their companies in the ground. Only the small employees get sacked, the ones on top have lawyers to make sure they get away with every failure.
