Katie Couric Explains Reaction To Bad Press: "If I Listened To What Every Bitch In New York City Said About Me, I'd Never Leave The House"

Katie Couric appeared on "The View" Wednesday morning and reiterated her position that she has "no plans" to leave CBS News after the election — and she revealed an interesting strategy for coping with bad press: turning to Sex and the City.

"I'm enjoying what I'm doing now," Couric told the ladies. "I really like the people I'm working with."

When pressed on whether she would stay through the end of her contract (which expires in 2011), Couric said, "We'll see. You know. We'll see. You have to constantly assess the situation. I'm enjoying it. I think our show is really strong. We just won an Edward R. Murrow award for best newscast."

Couric then explained how she has dealt with the negative press surrounding her possible departure and her broadcast's sluggish ratings — specifically how she handles that with her daughters (Carrie, 12, and Ellie, 17):

Carrie once said, when I was kind of bummed out about something somebody had written that was really nasty and had nothing do do with my abilities or my journalistic abilities...she said, "Mom, remember what Samantha said in Sex and the City: If I listened to what every bitch in New York City said about me, I'd never leave the house."

What a dumb headline. She was quoting her daughter is who was quoting a character on an old TV show. It was funny when Samantha said it, and it was funny when Couric used it. Too bad the headline wasn't about her charitable work.

By 'using' the quote on air which was cited by her daughter, as one possible attitude to adopt, she embraced the quote. She didn't cite Gandhi or the Pope or MLK Jr. She didn't go for wisdom from Seventh Heaven or Touched by An Angel; she chose to pull out of her recall and push out of her mouth something that came from that Sex and the City – the hardened, street-wise approach apparently.
As to her charity work, bravo for her, but we know that acts of charity on the one hand don’t necessarily make up for the evils inflicted by the other.

You can love or hate Katie but her program is the closest example of pro McCain and Corporate propaganda next to Fox news there is on t.v. And that's enough for me to turn her off. Way off.

I think Katie does a great job (during the rare times I watch her). Its just that the "nightly news" is boring in general. Like a lot of other Americans, I get my news from the Internet primarily, not television.

Poor Katie has plenty of talent, but she is doing something she has no particular talent for. If Rachel Maddow were the first female anchor she would have set a great precedence. Maddow is quick enough to hold attention of the listener and to move on with the news. Couric is a meandering stream. Maddow rocks.

I love Rachel Maddow. Katie lost her cred as a newsperson and she lost it very quickly. Her badgering Obama on the surge question was a very poor display of interviewing at that news level.

A bit disingenuous of Huffington Post, isn't it? I mean, to run with such a misleading title to this story. I'm no worshipper of Katie Couric, by any stretch, but it appears you are deliberately taking her words out of context. When she made that "bitch" comment, Couric was paraphrasing her daughter, who in turn was quoting Samantha from Sex and the City. The quote wasn't original to her, and you don't show that until well after the jump.

Okay...She just meant that Katie has the right to be out there and be mediocre among all those other Charlie's and George's. No one is going to fire them anytime soon.
