Katie Couric Explains Reaction To Bad Press: "If I Listened To What Every Bitch In New York City Said About Me, I'd Never Leave The House"

Katie Couric appeared on "The View" Wednesday morning and reiterated her position that she has "no plans" to leave CBS News after the election — and she revealed an interesting strategy for coping with bad press: turning to Sex and the City.

"I'm enjoying what I'm doing now," Couric told the ladies. "I really like the people I'm working with."

When pressed on whether she would stay through the end of her contract (which expires in 2011), Couric said, "We'll see. You know. We'll see. You have to constantly assess the situation. I'm enjoying it. I think our show is really strong. We just won an Edward R. Murrow award for best newscast."

Couric then explained how she has dealt with the negative press surrounding her possible departure and her broadcast's sluggish ratings — specifically how she handles that with her daughters (Carrie, 12, and Ellie, 17):

Carrie once said, when I was kind of bummed out about something somebody had written that was really nasty and had nothing do do with my abilities or my journalistic abilities...she said, "Mom, remember what Samantha said in Sex and the City: If I listened to what every bitch in New York City said about me, I'd never leave the house."

I don't particularly care for Katie Couric as an anchor, but I don't spend my days worry about her either. It's interesting to read all this venom spilled out over her. Why don't people just say, " Who cares?" and call it a day? She has made a successful career for herself, and even if she gets fired tomorrow, she never needs to work another day in her life and will have enjoyed many years as a celebrity in the news industry. I say good for her, and I also choose not watch her on television, then I don't have to participate in the cult of Katie-haters who only serve to make her more popular.

When will people learn that the best way to make someone "go away" is too simply ignore them? Constantly talking about Katie, posting on blogs about Katie, etc., just keeps her relevant and in the media. Don't people realize that Katie actually enjoys having people hate her? She loves it because it means that at least people are talking about her, which is all that matters in the media industry.

As the comedian Katt Williams jokes, "If you've got 14 haters in spring, you need to figure out how to get 16 by the time summer is over!" In other words, whipping up a frenzy of hate about Katie Couric, Rachel Ray, Paris Hilton, or whoever it is whom you love to hate, simply keeps these folks in the spotlight.

Honey, I never said you didn't have a right to post, nor did I say you had to love Katie--I sure don't. What I did was simply write the truth: The more you go on and on about Katie, the more you boost her career and the more you keep her in the spotlight.

Here's an example: Do you think anyone would even remember who Britney Spears was if she wasn't the subject of constant "news" broadcasts and blog posts? No, she would just be some washed-out former pop star. However, because all the people who "hate on" her just can't stop discussing her, she probably has more fame from being a "crazy b**tch" than she does from being a singer. In fact, it was all the publicity over her going insane which made her last album successful. Do you think more than a handful of folks would have bothered to review it, much less buy it if it weren't for the constant publicity she got over her custody battles and her breakdowns?

So, fine, keep on b**tching about Katie. You are only doing her a big favor.

She's more of a spot on the bottom of their shoes. I hate it that it took a female to make journalism look ugly, just like it took another female to make the presidency look just as ugly. Some females need to check their personalities or "stay home".

Couric is, as I've said before, a fine example of a presenter personality. She is not a serious journalist. She is just the kind of personality that mainstream news media outlets like to front their operations! It's the lack of serious journalism and dogged investigation that the mainstream media is trying to keep out of their organizations! Otherwise, they would have Greg Palast on their payrolls!

The headline of this piece is misleading, as are many of the headlines on this web site.

It's bad enough when MSM / the tabloids try to add punch by altering a headline. It's disappointing that HuffPo would do the same.

That said, Couric knows better than anyone how easily something said can be taken out of context. I'll guarantee you she has been DYING to use that quote from SATC. She may not have said it originally, but she meant it.
