Barack Obama's campaign may get a major electoral boon from an organization that was accused of conspiring against him in the primary.

Women's Voices Women's Votes (WVWV), a non-partisan organization whose mailers caused confusion in the days prior to the North Carolina primary, is set to launch a historic, $2.4 million voter registration effort for the general election. The group's effort, "You Count. Be Counted!" will target 7 million unmarried women in 24 states during the late summer and early fall. The result could be a big boost for the Illinois Democrat.

"In the 2004 election, 20 million unmarried women did not participate, 15 million of whom were unregistered and 5 million of whom did not vote," said Page Gardner, President of WVWV. "If more and more unmarried women comprise a greater share of the electorate, elections will naturally change... Although a third of unmarried woman have traditionally voted Republican, because we are at such a place in our country -- they think the country is on the wrong track, they were first against the war, they need health care improved the most -- you do have a very important progressive constituency and a constituency in the most need for change. That is a snapshot of now, how it will play overtime remains to be seen."

The states being targeted by the group, which does not endorse or collaborate with candidates or parties, include Arkansas, Illinois Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia, and West Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

"Our overall goal for the cycle has been to make sure that we reach and register 900,000 and a million applications," said Gardner. "We are hoping and we think we will reach that goal with this mailing. So far our response rates have been completely off the charts in terms for the last mailing that we did."

In the days before the North Carolina primary, WVWV was accused of making robo-calls deliberately designed to confuse Obama's supporters. The calls, some of which were narrated by a deep-voiced, black male, told voters that the state's election was on a date that had already passed. Moreover, the group failed to provide contact information or a way to decline future calls -- a violation of North Carolina law.

WVWV has since apologized for the mistake, which seemed to have been the product of haste and over-ambition rather than politics. For the current effort, Gardner insisted that firewalls would be in place to prevent any confusion.

"Women's Voices Women Vote has contacted election officials in each state where the campaign will be active to notify them of the mailing, let them know to expect an increased number of registration forms that will need to be processed, and ensure the registration materials meet state standards," read a press release. "WVWV will continue to work with election officials and do everything it can to ensure unmarried women are able to exercise their right to vote in this historic election."

I think this is a positive message: "You count!" I like it.

They had still better keep their tactics in check. Just because they might now help Obama doesn't mean their methods are necessarily ethical. But if they stay above-board (in this and future elections), then I don't see why their aid would be anything but a positive.

Women need to get their priorities straight. Voting for JM is a vote to stack the SCOTUS with more dinosaurs like S c a lia who will rest assured overturn roe v wade. Thinking about having sex with your bf? You can put that out of your mind because abstinence will be forced on everyone. You are about to go vote for a guy who views women as nothing more than a sex object.

A sincere welcome to WVWV.

Good news: Obama made gains in every category. Three days ago Research 2000 showed Obama ahead 22 points capturing 56% of women voters to McCain's 34%. While a few stragglers yet to commit, apparently are learning McCain is neither moderate nor a champion of women's rights.

In dealing with our male-counterparts, to this day, whether in private, personal or business settings in varying degrees women are still treated like 3rd class citizens. Although it has improved especially the past decade. However whatever gains we've made will likely be set-back if (god forbid) McCain somehow snatches the election.

I never could understand the notion women had a mandate to vote for HRC. Once the election became a referendum on "breaking-the-glass-ceiling" it overshadowed all else -- even the candidate herself. I believe HRC became the object of that passion for many women.

So understandably it has not been easy for Hillary's most avid supporters to come around, but Iam glad they are.

There is too much at stake not to.

Again... welcome.

I'm still hoping come the convention that the delegates see that the dnc has thrown th erace, and that there is no way boy wonder can beat McCain. If the delegates see the forest for the trees they will see...He didn't win the big states, Ca,Ny,Fl,TX,NJ....he didn't win the swing states.....he didn't carry Reagan Dems, women, hispanics,Asians,Catholics, women, 50% of liberals...nor did he carry the white blue collar workers.....He didn't win Ohio,Pa,WVirginia,Tn,or Iowa...as that was a n insider caucus........................the guy will not turn red states blue, he couldn't even beat Hillary in teh already blue states......we all now it was some hinky precedent setting wierd thing with the delegate apportionment, and also in order for Hillary not to pull the popular vote they had to eliminate Florida...and give Obama half of the half votes in Mi where he wasn't even on the ballot. If you can't see whats in front of you...a rigged primary......I hope they see the light before November, or there will be some very sorry democrats that they didn't go with the sure winner to beat McCain...Hillary Clinton. You can be for Obama for whatever reason, but don't shut yourself of from the reality and the truth...no matter who you are voting for ...and at least see If Obama picks Hagel.......Hagel is the one who owns part of ES&S voting machines and still does through a McCarthy group.....wake up people

I always thought Colorado, Virginia, North Carolina and Missouri were considered swing states (unless you believe that the GOP has some sort of birthright entitlement to these states' electoral votes). and Obama is turning the entire Southwest and Mountain regions into one big region of potential swing states... and Hillary would never have been as competitive in many of those states.

BTW - Obama got more delegates out of Texas than Hillary - so, get ready for this... HE WON TEXAS!!!

Wow. Hard to believe that there are still people still so much in denial... pointing the finger at everyone and everything they can think of rather than accept the fact that their candidate lost.

Wake up yourself! stop living in the past.

"The" mistake? They didn't make A mistake, they didn't make A COUPLE of mistakes, they made the same "mistake" OVER AND OVER AGAIN, in primary after primary, state after state. I remember reading as the stories unfolded, and thinking that it appeared to be premeditated and deliberate, and that the unmarried-woman angle simply a ruse. And ironically, one of the key findings in the April 2008 study WVWV commissioned to study differences between married and unmarried women vis a vis economic issues was that, "The notion of a “women’s vote” or “women’s agenda” is likely outdated. While there are generalizations that can be applied, political behavior and, in many instances, policy preferences are driven by marital status."

Back to WVWV.... Maggie Williams is or was on their Leadership council. John Podesta is involved. The study they commissioned was conducted by Bill Clinton's old pollster, Stan Greenberg. There are other ties this group has to top people in the Clinton administration. Gardner's "explanations" for multiple instances of voter interference spanning months didn't wash with most of the HuffPo readers who stayed with the story. Based on her history of repeated excuses and "apologies" following multiple repetitions of the same actions, there's no reason to believe they won't do it again in the general election, and again cost Obama votes.

Could you provide links to these allegations?
I watched the primary pretty closely and I don't remember all of this "conspiring" you are talking about. If I remember coreectly there was barely a ripple.

I don't know why so many of the bloggers ohn HuffPo do not provide links embedded in their stories... particularly when usiong loaded terms like "accused" and "conspiring."

Same goes for those commenting with larger than life accusations.
Lots more credibility if you can provide sources for this kind of thing.

First, most people casually perusing these entries and replies would think that I had used the words "accused" and "conspiring," and you were taking me to task for it. You appear to be referring to the statement, "Barack Obama's campaign may get a major electoral boon from an organization that was accused of conspiring against him in the primary." That's from Sam Stein's blog entry above, so take it up with him. I used neither of those words.

If you're actually interested in learning about this group, here are some links to some articles, many of which include additional links to other source material:

I turned these links up in under 3 minutes using Google and the on-site search functions here and on other sites. The survey from which I quoted was commissioned by WVWV and I discovered it on the pollster's website: http://www.greenbergresearch.com/articles/2187/4229_wvwvsurvey.pdf

I think everyone has totally missed Obama's message. His message of change, unity, reaching across. The man has gone this far because he is extremely intelligent. He wants us all to unite.Remember the debate when he said "Hillary and I were friends when we started and will be when it's done".He's never ruled her out and never said anything belittling about her.I still think he may put her as the VP but he has to allow time for people to see him and what he stands for.Now that he's done that he very well may put her in that spot.So far,he and his campaign has set a fine example of how things should be.This man is definitely a good christian in my opinion and whatever choices he makes always seem so far to be for the good of the people. We should all follow his example and learn from it.We must all work together to achieve peace and prosperity worldwide. All Mcain has ever offered is war, war, war.

As a woman, this makes me cheer. If this is the true aim of this group, good on them, and on all women's groups who seek to educate women on the issues, the candidates, and the elective process. It's nice to see women's political groups such as these, appealing to women's intellect and women's innate ability to reason, rather than so many of the groups currently out there (such as PUMA) who prey on the weaker members of our gender by pandering to their emotions, brainwashing them with inflammatory rhetoric, and thereby stripping them of their ability to rationally partipate in the process.

On the upside, however, with such groups unwittingly weeding the intellectually dubious players out of the process, it's great to have groups like these seeking to engage new blood who will hopefully bring a more intellectually enlightened and politically savvy set of players to the game. While part of me thinks that anyone who has sat out until now may not bring much more than a vote to the table, I remind myself that I once thought the same about my own generation (GenX/Millenials) who have proven themselves to be much more intelligent, not to mention politically and technologically savvy, than the vast majority of veteran voters. The Obama campaign is a very strong testament to the power of the Young Dems, and first time unjaded voters, as many of these women may be.

Yikes...

where to begin?

never mind... your post says it all.

WOw.
You and your generation are just so wonderful.

If you do say so yourself.

Nice way to discount and toss away whole groups of womehn who you know nothing about...
just a little ignorant don't you think?

nice you are technologically savvy, now catch up on social justice issues.

And while you are at it how about organizing half a million people to protest the war in wWashington.
You have far more tolols than those old-jaded people did.
If they could do it you should be able to.

Oh, there is no "donate" button, eh?
Ok...
whatever.

Thank you for the lecture. Just to fill you in, I am a feminist lesbian who needs not to be told to "catch up on social justice issues." While I myself am only 33, my partner of 15 years is 58 and EVERY single one of our female friends is over the age of 55, all educators, and they are all staunch second-wave feminists who very much inform my opinions. Three of my friends were national leaders in the Title IX movement. I have read nearly every second and third wave book on feminism, women in politics, and womens issues. I could probably educate you on more than a few issues.

If you had read my post clearly, you would have understood that just until very recently I held my own generation in fairly low regards with regards to civil and politcal activism. I said that it was this election that has proven ME wrong as well as, I believe, older veteran voters such as yourself who probably feel that younger voters, who overwhelmingly support Obama, are just a bunch of naive koolaid drinkers who neither understand nor respect the process. In helping Obama defeat an opponent as strong a Clinton, I believe that those of us who have either abstained, or been outright discounted from, the process have proven that we have a much better understanding than those such as yourself (or even myself) has ever given us credit for.

I was just thinking if this would take the wind out of their sails... but after reading some of their comments on another thread, i'm convinced more than ever that PUMA is just a shabbily disguised tool for sowing Democratic party disunity and gratuitous smears of Obama. The pathetic "concern for democracy and the Democratic party" BS is starting to wear thin... hopefully if a few more organizations join in the effort, PUMA will continue to decline in relevance.

What has PUMA go to do with WVWV? Registering unmarried women citizens so they can vote is a noble action. PUMA is a political organization that has decided to take on the DNC and its attitude that women are to be taken for granted, but not seriously. DNC brought PUMA on itself. They want actions, not words and that isn't unheard of in today's political climate. Or is "change" just the theme of the day?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:12 PM on 07/30/2008

What's pathetic is calling "concern for democracy" pathetic. If there was party unity O would be up by double digits. The Dems have lost a critical part of their base probably close to 15% for this election by throwing democracy out the window. Which is too bad because this part of the base decides every election. The dems can't win without it.
