WASHINGTON — Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens pleaded not guilty to corruption charges Thursday and received an unusually speedy trial date, which he hopes will clear his name before voters consider re-electing him in November.

Stevens said the tentative Sept. 24 trial date set by U.S. District Judge Emmt G. Sullivan "should allow ample time for a decision before the general election" in November.

"I am looking forward to this trial as a way of finally showing the truth _ that I'm innocent," the 40-year Senate veteran said in a written statement Thursday evening.

Stevens, a Capitol Hill bulldozer accustomed to winning political battles, wrangled control of the normally sluggish judicial process. The Senate's longest-serving Republican faces a tough re-election fight and made it clear Thursday that he does not want his seven-count indictment getting in the way.

"He'd like to clear his name before the election," Stevens' attorney, Brendan Sullivan, told the judge. "This is not a complex case. It should be one that moves quickly."

The Justice Department accuses Stevens of lying on congressional disclosure documents about more than $250,000 in gifts and home renovations he received over seven years from a powerful oil field services contractor.

Prosecutors said they had no problem going t trial swiftly.

"That is absolutely fine," prosecutor Brenda K. Morris said.

Judge Sullivan said he understood "why the senator would like to have this matter commenced and concluded before the elections, and by all indications, that is possible."

Stevens, 84, also asked that the trial be moved from Washington to Alaska, where he has been a political figure since before statehood. He was named "Alaskan of the Century" in 1999 after unabashedly sending billions of dollars in federal money to the frontier state. The judge said he was not likely to send the case to Alaska.

Stevens wore a cream colored suit and a U.S. flag pin. In place of his trademark Incredible Hulk necktie _ symbolizing his temper and reputation in the Senate _ he wore a conservative blue and white tie. In court, he sat impassively and let his attorney do all the talking. He left without speaking to reporters.

Trials, especially public corruption trials, can take years to play out and seldom move this quickly. Sullivan, a $1,000-an-hour member of Washington's legal elite, said he has never asked for such a fast track.

"But I've never had a situation with a general election coming 98 days after an indictment," he said.

Some Republican lawmakers _ most notably presidential candidate Sen. John McCain _ have distanced themselves from Stevens as the GOP gears up for November. Senate Democrats, who enjoy a 51-49 majority, want to capture a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority.

In Alaska, Stevens faces both Democratic and Republican challengers who are trying to capitalize on his legal woes. Democrats are counting on Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, a popular figure in Alaska and a member of a well-known political family to keep Stevens from winning his seventh full term.

Stevens is accused of concealing his gifts from executives of VECO Corp., a once powerful contracting firm that used bribery and back room dealing to push favorable legislation and kill laws that were bad for the oil industry. Two executives have pleaded guilty, admitting they lavished money, gifts and campaign contributions on favored politicians and worked to keep their enemies at bay.

The former executives are cooperating with the FBI. One of them, Bill Allen, let agents tape his phone calls with the senator. The Justice Department said Thursday it has 500 gigabytes of evidence in the case, including wiretap conversations and hidden video. That's enough to fill the most powerful consumer computers on the market.

The department stopped short, however, of charging Stevens with bribery or other traditional corruption charges. Despite winning cooperation from the VECO executives and searching the senator's home, prosecutors said they could not prove a this-for-that corruption case.

Stevens was booked by U.S. marshals during a break in court. He was released on bail and is free to travel inside the U.S. He was ordered to surrender his passport. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison on each of seven counts.

His indictment is the culmination of an FBI investigation that for years has sent tremors through Alaska's political system. Several state lawmakers have been charged and others, including Stevens' son, Ben, remain under scrutiny.

A few years ago I was watching a Senate subcommittee (energy) hearing in which Senator Stevens was the chair. He had the CEOs from all the major oil companies there. They were to testify on the "fixing" of oil prices. Barbara Boxer asked that he (Stevens) swear them in, and he refused. She asked three more times, and every time Stevens refused. He got so angry that I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I've never seen anyone in a committee hearing get so POed. I wish someone would find that video and post it. It would be a laugh riot now.

What Larry Craig is to Idaho, Ted Stevens is to Alaska. Please let them stay "on the job" for as long as possible. They continue to be poster children for just how corrupt, power hungry and hypocritical the Republican Party has become.

Brendan Sullivan - I haven't heard that name in a while.

Wasn't he with Ollie North in front of the Senate? - "What am I, a potted plant?"

I'm not surprised at the corruption ... as this potentially wonderful country is surly the world leader in corruption and white collar crime based on total dollars.

What gets me is how cheap it is to get these politicians to sell out. Maybe it is a volume business. I mean how much did McCain get from Charles Keating, 10 grand, 20 grand, of course he was only a junior senator then.

This is why there is "race card" and celebrity status talk going on so we won't pay attention to corruption.

Stevens said he paid every bill he received for the construction. He's probably telling the truth. He didn't receive any bills.

Well let's see here. $250,000 of work put into his lavish home, by an OIL COMPANY. And where is this Senator from?? ALASKA. And does it have anything to do with opening up drilling in ANWR?? LOL, that's what I wanna know.

As far as whether he's guilty or not, kinda hard not to look down on the fella, being that he can't just give his home back to the oil company. I mean, that's like being caught in bed with another woman, by your wife, and you think she's gonna say "innocent til proven guilty"? HAR-HAR.

As far as the outcome? LOL, even funnier. But my guess is, he'll blame his age for his lack of submitting the necessary paperwork, that he had already filled it out and had it all ready, but due to a scheduling conflict and brief absent-mindedness, he forgot it. The Feds will say "no harm, no foul", let him submit it, maybe slap him on the wrist with a $500 fine and all will be forgotten within 72 hours and we'll never hear from this senator again in the news, except when he retires.

Compare that to you or me, who would already be sitting in a cramped prison cell awaiting either a habeaus corpus plea, or a plane to gitmo. You don't cheat the govt out of money and get off lightly, unless you are the govt, like this bigshot. ;)
